"Success in almost any field depends more on energy and drive than it does on intelligence. This explains why we have so many stupid leaders." - Sloan Wilson

Now, this is an interesting quote, and I agree with it. However, it is one thing to be a stupid leader, but another to follow him/her. There is no such thing as a leader if no one is following. So, what does it say about those who are following such a stupid person? Also, I guess it depends on how one defines success. If the person leading is abusive and mistreating of those in his charge, for the purpose of gaining from it, then his/her "success" is only based on a worldly definition of the term. However, this quote seems to be suggesting that a person with drive is going to have a greater shot at succeeding at things than someone who is highly intelligent but has no motivation. This I highly agree with.

I totally agree. I think so many leaders are leaders because they scare other people or no one else wants to be leaders (or has the drive). People don't want them as an enemy so they follow.

I read somewhere that being a manager and a leader are two different things. There are a lot of managers out there, who are simply "managing" the situation. But a leader is one who can command a following, a sort of Pied Piper, if you will. A leader does much more than manage to get by. A leader informs with a vision, nurtures by allowing growth, fosters a healthy morale, encourages to get the best results possible, looks for win-win situations, and promotes a strong work ethic by modeling it himself/ herself. A true leader simply creates a following. The best way to tell how much of a leader one is, is to see what the followers do when he/she is not around. A good leader has the potential to inspire one to do more than what was asked, a poor leader will barely get the results that he/she was looking for.

I totally agree with that.

....on the other hand, Saddam Hussein and Adolf Hitler are considered leaders. But they were followed more out of deception and fear than any embracing of the men that they were or the beliefs that they held.
