Another light week for Lara publicly…given that the big push for "Un Regard Neuf" is now winding down, we might expect this will be more the norm, compared to the frenetic activity of the last year. (At least until any 'Italian' album shows up…)
The major event involved Lara's appearance on the "Symphonic Show" taped in September. She sang a song from Johnny Hallyday's repertoire (written by Michel Berger), called "Diego". It was a restrained performance of the short song. She also gave another fine presentation of "Aime". A few audience members were asked what their favorite song of hers was, and, to no great surprise, they mentioned "Je t'aime". At the urging of the host, Lara sang a bit of it a capella. On her own she did a little imitation of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" (and gave up pretty quickly on it). Videos are available on the web. A translation of "Diego" is presented in a separate thread.
The performance of "Diego" re-invigorated the undercurrent of opinion that Lara has stopped taking chances in her singing, and seems to have as a main goal smiling and being loved by the audience [see also PureMariah's post]. Her desire to be a comedian also fits this categorization. By comparison with videos available from her time in Quebec, when she was in her 20's, there does seem to be an element of truth in this. People do tend to become more conservative when they have something (like a reputation) to lose…Nevertheless, the fact that she is still willing to sing songs outside of her repertoire does show that some 'daring' is still alive.
Lara also came under scrutiny this week for her comments about France. We know that while over in Quebec she contrasted her joy at being there with some less-than-complimentary statements about France. However, the article that drew the most attention in this regard was her interview in a Belgian publication "le flair l'hebdo". It incited such a response on the official site that Lara's father closed the topic.
The relevant statement was quite brief, but coming on top of her other comments in Canada it made it clear that while most of her 'angels' may live in France, she doesn't share their appreciation for their country. [In a way, this parallels the reaction of some Americans to Lara's comments about the U.S.] Since some other comments in the article were also of interest, I include a translation of it here. LARA FABIAN: "SOME CHILDREN? I WANT TWO OR THREE!"
Lara returns with a new live disc following the album "9". New, she is still it, at the gates of maternity and from now on stepping back from Parisian show business. 37 years old, the Belgian is doing well and that's obvious!
YOUR ALBUM "9" WAS RESOLUTELY DIFFERENT FROM ITS PREDECESSORS AND HAS THEREFORE HAD DIFFERENT RECEPTION.
Nobody has made the effort to understand where I wanted to go with this disc. It was an album of transition, less federative [i.e., centrally-governed], less sentimental, more musical. I wasn't waiting to sell a million copies, and at the end, I have heard 350,000. This is, in a time of crisis, not too little, not too much. I am not disappointed.
THE FIRST SINGLE OF YOUR LIVE ALBUM IS ENTITLED "AIME". LOVE, IT IS WHAT FOR YOU?
It is the opposite of all the feelings that cause suffering. It is a very harmonious mixture of all that which produces happiness, but has some given moments. Love is not continuous, it is a punctuation made of lots of ingredients. That said, mystically speaking, love is truly eternal. It is something indestructible. A part of each of us is immortal and divine.
WHY, THEN, IS IT SO COMPLICATED TO LIVE, AND TO SUCCEED AT?
Because human beings are not always very happy, and that is very much below love, unfortunately.
IT IS SAID THAT OUR CAPACITY TO LOVE DEPENDS ON THE LOVE THAT WE RECEIVED WHILE A CHILD…
That is clear. Myself, I never doubted the love of my parents. They have not always been perfect - and myself not more so - but they have arrived at an extraordinary love. An absolute love that I have never found with men. In any case, at first. But it was in part my fault. In the beginning, I was attracted by my 'constrainers'. Some people incapable of giving that which could be.
HOW DID YOU LEAVE THIS PATTERN?
At a given moment I got fed up with suffering and I made a true choice. For one acts only from that. There exists a solution to each pain. It suffices just to have so much need. As long as it is easier to hurt, you remain in pain. To heal is an act of immense courage.
YOUR PARENTS HAVE BEEN IN LOVE FOR 40 YEARS, THEY ARE THEREFORE AN EXAMPLE FOR YOU, A MODEL TO FOLLOW…
Quite. At the same time, their course puts me under pressure! (Laughing). It has not always been easy for them, they sometimes said some harsh things to each other, and battled to stay together, but they always knew that their love was worth the pain of being true to the end…
YOU WILL BE 37 JANUARY 9. IT WOULD BE A GOOD TIME TO HAVE A CHILD, NO?
Yes, yes, I think of it more and more. And as an only child, I want two or three children. For counterbalance! I am already afraid of not being able to be equal to being a mother, but mine swears to me that I would be the best of mothers. Better than her, that's what she says!
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THE PASSING TIME [AGING]?
Super well! For all the world, I would not return to the past. With the years I feel more serene, more relaxed, I let go of the ballast. I have just three wrinkles more, but it isn't so serious. A good supplemental night cream, a little more sleep and it is forgotten! In any case, people give me ten years less, they believe that I am still in my 20s!
YOU HAVE ALWAYS PAID ATTENTION TO YOURSELF, YOU HAVE ALWAYS RESPECTED YOUR APPEARANCE…
Yes, I don't drink and I don't eat meat. It happens sometimes for me to drink a cup of champagne or two, but at that second, already, my eyes start drooping. Then I laugh like a crazy person and, after the third cup, I go to lie down.
YOU ARE AN EXCEPTION?
Yes, in show business, there is much alcohol. And many many many drugs. I don't know how all these people keep it together. There are some lost souls.
LAST QUESTION: YOU RETURNED TO LIVE IN BRUSSELS THREE YEARS AGO. YOU DON'T ANY MORE HAVE A PIED-A-TERRE IN PARIS?
Yes, but I have become a Belgian resident. From now on, my life is here. Paris, I am obliged to go there, and one must truly drag me by the skin of my back so that I go there. Over there, the energy is unhealthy, all reeks of covetousness, there are many people in France who don't exist for me anymore.

9 TRICKY CHOICES
HELENE SEGARA OR AXELLE RED?
Axelle Red, I don't know her well, she has sometimes said some things not cool about me, but she is natural. Her!
MEN: DARK-HAIRED OR BLONDS?
If it is necessary to choose, dark-haired. Rather Latins or Mediteranneans. But for me, a man must first of all be true.
DRESS OR JEANS?
Jeans! I am very much more at ease in jeans! I rarely wear a skirt, or even then with boots.
FITNESS OR YOGA?
Yoga. I have been doing Pilates for three years, it is a rather gentle cardio practice but I feel it's good nevertheless. I tried Hatha yoga also, but it is more meditative.
GEORGE CLOONEY OR BRAD PITT?
Brad Pitt. However, I spent an evening with George Clooney. He is ultra-intelligent , he is still very handsome while vital, but there is something about him that doesn't please me.
PAPA OR MOMMA?
Exclamation! I call my mother directly more, and to my father I send some SMS [direct text messages]. To tell him that I'm thinking of him.
ROUQUIER OR FOGIET?
Neither one nor the other. I have never wanted to participate in their broadcasts. I have nothing to do or to say to these people who are just there to take me down and to shout at me.
STEAMED SOLE OR CHOCOLATE MOUSSE?
Sole! I adore fish. But it is necessary for me to have dishes with it. I cannot live without carbohydrates. I give out too much energy!
CINDERELLA OR SNOW WHITE?
Snow White. Like her, I would have had confidence in the mean witch. I'm very much for myself also!

This coming week, Lara will appear on the Canadian program "ConcertPop tout en piano" - original performances accompanied by a piano, keyboard or accordian. It was recorded November 28, and will be shown tomorrow (1/8) on Musimax at 2000.
Next weekend, January 14, Lara's appearance on TV5 - the Acoustic Show - will be aired. Apparently she will perform some 6 songs in acoustic versions and discuss her world travels and upcoming spring "Night of the Proms" tour. It is scheduled for Saturday, the 13th at 0045, and Sunday the 14th at 1630 (French time).
But the big event of the week, is that Lara will be 37 on Tuesday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to her!
