Lara’s time again was spent with the Star Academie. Here’s a synopsis of this week’s episode:
The three contestants were:
1) Matt (now with blond hair)– performed an original song, written this week, that he worked on with the other teachers (as seen during the dailies). Lara said, “I think it's a great song. For me, there is no more abstraction there, there is you.” He said he feels he found himself much closer to what he wants to be.
2) Annabel: Learned this week that to be hypersensitive and to take things to heart is not a weakness. A transformative moment for her occurred in Lara’s office, who said words to her that truly allowed her to drop her armor. Lara said don’t hide it with a smile. She wanted to sing “Indelebile” of Yseult but the teachers suggested it wasn’t a good song for her to show her capabilities.
3) Lunou: A transformative moment for her was meeting Pepe; when they danced, she worked her body, she said it was amazing. A beautiful moment had been her preparation with Lara. She gained other nuances, other ways of seeing a song. Lara said she had the facility to be both a good actress and singer.
As implied above, Pepe Munoz, teacher of artistic identity has joined them in Quebec, now being free from confinement on coming from France.
Here were the performances:
Matt Moln (8:46): Sang his own song, “De l’or”. Very pleasant song, nicely performed, soothing voice. All the judges said he had taken a great risk, that proved worthwhile.
Annabel Oreste (13:52): Sang “Bird Set Free” of Sia. She said she wanted to both vulnerable and authentic while singing strongly. It was a wonderful performance, passionate, with excellent range.
Lunou Zucchini (18:54): She sang “Parc Belmont” of Diane Dufresne. She had said it leaves her zone of comfort, and is a risk, and it shows a little more her theatrical side. It too was a wonderful performance, coupled with her excellent voice. Patrice said that "Parc Belmont is more than a song, it is a mountain that singers dare to climb. And you’ve reached the summit." Lara said, “Me, I began my week like that with her. And I’m going to finish my week like that. Truly you have the capacity to tell us a story. And you have the capacity to make one believe we do not have the feeling that you have been borrowing the life of another while you tell us this story, we believe you, and that is the quality of the greats. Bravo, you are magnificent.”
All three performances were noteworthy. I would have voted for Annabel first, then Lunou. The verdict: The public chose Lunou. The teachers chose Annabel.
As for Matt, the Star Academie decided that his song was so beautiful that it will appear on the next records of the Star Academie. That was a nice consolation. He implies in the article below that he may have lost because the song wasn’t famous, but really he was not as good a vocalist as the other two contestants. If he had been up against weaker competition, he might have continued.
Here’s a discussion from the Journal de Montreal (https://www.journaldemontreal.com/2021/03/14/star-academie--double-fierte-pour-matt-moln-1)
--------------------------------------------------
"Star Académie": double pride for Matt Moln
It was "double jeopardy" for Matt Moln at Star Academy on Sunday, and he knew it. Not only was the candidate from Lévis playing his place in the adventure, but he opted as a spearhead, to stand out, for an original composition. A decision fully assumed.
“Despite all the 'Star Ac' game that ends for me, it's really great pride to have had the opportunity to present this song. To have spent with a famous song, which would perhaps have been liked more, I think that I would have been less proud than at this moment ”, said the one who composes “since always ”, and who has already recorded material under the pseudonym MOLN, available on the web.
Matt, Mathieu Michaud of his real name, was genuinely happy at the end of his evening on Sunday. A little sad to have to leave his friends from Star Académie, the dislodged of the week, who bowed to Lunou Zucchini (choice of the public) and Annabel Oreste (choice of teachers), was still not at all upset after the variety that led to his elimination.
Because, not yet completely clear in his own eyes, the lyrics of his piece “De l’or” tells the story of a flight accompanied by a deliverance, and this is not trivial.
"It had been a while since I had experienced reality TV badly," admits the boy bluntly. “I think that in reality TV there is a bit of "TV" that is not reality. Even without Star Académie, I would have launched an album, I would have "left the thing" anyway. I was ready to go elsewhere, to start "for real" to be an artist. "
“There was a part of me that didn't necessarily want to go, but didn't regret it. We've been here for a while, it's a long time for us”, adds the admirer of Louis-Jean Cormier and Klô Pelgag, who received a message of encouragement from his favorite before his performance on Sunday.
In the short term, Matt Moln would like to establish collaborations with “anyone”, including his former Academy mates, and aspires to release an album sooner rather than later.
Queen and Celine
Anyone who would still question the relevance of a show like Star Académie would only have had to fall back on the tribute to Queen's work at the opening on Sunday (with the participation of Sylvain Cossette) and, later on, the nod to Celine Dion's album Falling Into You, to recognize that such celebrations of music are more than necessary in terms of cultural heritage.
Seeing and hearing a 22-year-old Jacob Roberge stand out on ‘Don't Stop Me Now’, or a 20-year-old Shayan Heidari lead Bohemian Rhapsody, tracks far from their own time, shows that music has neither age nor borders, no limits. It was wonderful.
And that they looked proud, our Academicians, the formidable Maëva Grelet in the lead, on the immortal "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" in the segment dedicated to Celine Dion, while at their feet, the dancers - including Pepe Munoz, close collaborator of the diva - poured out in a sensual choreography! A mixture of wonder and magic could be read in the eyes of the young singers, who will surely not soon forget this kind of moment.
As in 2012
Elsewhere at the gala, among other highlights, ‘Promenade sur Mars’, by Offenbach, inherited the title of “Chanson de la nation”, in this month when Gerry Boulet would have celebrated his 75th birthday.
Marrying blue, wine red and orange in his chic outfit, as only he knows how to do, Pierre Lapointe flew over his repertoire with the Waterloo troupe, from ‘La sexualité’ to ‘Deux par deux rassambles’.
We really had the impression of reliving fleetingly a variety of Star Académie 2012 while listening to Mélissa Bédard (re)put her soul (what a voice!) in 'Le cœur est un oiseau', Olivier Dion and Andee shout themselves on 'Pour exister' and 'Sur ma peau', and Sophie Pelletier infuse her grace into 'Tue-moi'. We also found that ‘Alors on danse’ always sticks to the skin of Andréanne A. Malette; this one kindly redirected Dashny Jules who, in duet with her, got entangled in the words of the hit of Stromae. Endangerment in sight next week for the energetic Dashny?
Golden singles
Finally, the rap segment led by Koriass and FouKi ended with a pleasant surprise for the two interested parties, who both received “Golden Singles” certifications (equivalent to 40,000 samples sold) for two of their pieces, ‘Cinq a sept’ and ‘Blacklights’ for Koriass, and ‘Ciel’ and ‘Gaye’ for Fouki.
The two artists swore they hadn't seen the gift coming. Koriass had earlier amused himself by changing the line "You're already drunk before five to seven" from ‘five’ to ‘seven’ for a sympathetic reference to a colleague who he esurely met earlier backstage, "T’es deja drunk with Sylvain Cossette ”.
The three songs performed by the candidates in danger are available on QUB music and on all streaming and download platforms.
Lunou Zucchini (People's Choice)
"When I have to take my place, I take it!" dumped Lunou in her presentation video. The 25-year-old candidate, from Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu, has indeed imposed herself, enough to attract the attention of the public, who granted her their vote. "Thank you very much! It’s so very flattering”, she exclaimed, a radiant smile of a little girl on her lips, learning that she was “the chosen one” of the week. There is no doubt that her interpretation of 'Parc Belmont', by Diane Dufresne, knew how to touch hearts, with her final soaring. Just theatrical enough, Lunou put into practice the advice that Lara Fabian had given her to convey the emotion in this text which speaks of mental illness. The Academician gave more and more as the pitch went up, threw knowing glances at the camera, launched a "pow!" felt at the right time, ran a hand through her hair and grabbed her microphone stand while, not far from her, her boyfriend rubbed his hands in pride. The stage, Luce Dufault's daughter apparently already has it in her blood!
Annabel Oreste (Professors' choice)
"You are going back to your castle," Patrice Michaud solemnly declared to the self-proclaimed "princess" Annabel (and dressed and made up as such, with tiara and long earrings, breathtakingly beautiful), after she was saved by the teachers. The candidate of Laval had rehearsed all week Indélébile, de Yseult, but her guardian angels of the Academy encouraged her to choose another piece, more revealing of the extent of her vocal capacities; this is why Annabel finally committed to ‘Bird Set Free’, a happy choice, which she deservedly honored. It was a sober performance on a white background, intense, vocally grandiose at times, technically perfect. Annabel reaped only laurels at the end of her singing tour. "You were imperial," Patrice Michaud told her. "It is possible to be decided, while listening to what comes from the outside", added Gregory Charles, to illustrate that Annabel had assimilated his advice.
Matt Moln (Dislodged)
With his timber sometimes reminiscent of Tire le Coyote, sometimes that of Louis-Jean Cormier, Matt Moln laid himself bare by offering a composition of his own, specially polished for the occasion, nicely titled “De l’or”. The risk paid off - the song will end up on Star Académie's album at the end of the season - but not enough to protect Matt, who unfortunately had to say goodbye to his comrades. "You put gold on my open wounds," declaimed the courageous participant from Lévis by way of refrain, in a setting evoking a starry sky, huge drops of water or sparkling diamonds, depending on the point of view. Ariane Moffatt praised his courage for having dared to explore this area of fragility, and affirmed with conviction that an effort like this alone justified her own presence within the faculty of the Academy. Matt had to leave, but his daring and talent were recognized anyway.

More of the same next week…with the next round of ‘endangered singers’ brought onto the firing line. As one can see, each week one or more of them discuss the benefits they received from interacting with Lara, again underlining how the ‘directoress’ position on this show gives her ready access to the young talent, which is so appealing to her. This might be the best position she’s ever had outside of ‘singer’. Stay safe everybody,
David
