Several stories vied for top billing this past week. For one, the Star Academie held its first “Selection Camp” this past Sunday. Prior to the show, Lara posted a link on her FB site to some promo photos for it, at

Lara Fabian on Star Académie selection camp
The great adventure of Star Academy 2021 will begin soon. Before revealing the names of the 15 academicians of the new cohort, we present the selection camp. This intensive three-day internship took place in Montreal in November and allowed the faculty to assess the 60 young artists who stood out the most at the auditions. Lara Fabian tells us what she witnessed during this express training.
Lara, what will the Star Académie selection camp allow viewers to see?
LF: They will see an exceptional diversity of courageous young artists from 16 to 30 years old. It takes guts to participate in such a selection camp! These young people not only have great talent, but they also have a real desire to learn. I've seen artists genuinely ready to develop the most important quality in my opinion, which is commitment to work. Those who are determined to work on their skills will more easily show who they really are.
What was on the program for these participants?
LF: They took several different courses: a music lab with Ariane Moffatt, a singing and musical adaptation class with Gregory Charles and an interpretation class with me. So we immersed them in the three fundamental areas of their learning: singing, composition and the ability to tell a story. It worked that way so that we could assess their strengths and points to work on. This portrait allows us to know how we can motivate them to develop the various facets of their talent.
Did they undergo assessments during the camp?
LF: There were individual selections after we grouped the participants into work teams. It allowed us to confirm how we felt about them during the courses they took.
What are you looking for in a good candidate?
LF: We are looking for someone who has the necessary commitment to develop their strengths and transcend their weaknesses. Candidates should also understand that they are not singing just to themselves, but doing it to communicate emotions to their fellow human beings.
Was it heartbreaking to let participants leave after the camp?
LF: Of course, it can be heartbreaking for them to go from qualifying to disqualifying. On the other hand, I want the participants to learn that, in life, you can only learn or win. There are people who are very afraid of failure and who believe only in victory or defeat, but I am not one of them. Nelson Mandela said, with good reason: “I never lose. Either I win or I learn."
What was the atmosphere between the participants? Did you feel a strong competition between them?
LF: On the contrary, there was a great bond between them! I was already seeing groups forming and solidarities consolidating. They were starting families in front of us.
As director of the Academy, have you had the time to pass on your values to the cohort?
LF: As the camp only lasted three days, I had little time to do it. Despite everything, what was important to me in my work was to make sure that the artistic identity of the participants was not a disguise, because some artists disguise themselves. Rather, I want their artistic identity to be the interface that will help them become who they really are.
Are you excited that Star Académie 2021's great adventure is about to begin soon?
LF: I find that wonderful! I feel very privileged to be able to be a part of it.
The second program devoted to the selection camp will be presented on Sunday, January 24, at 7 p.m.
-------------------------------------------------------
Hopefully Lara will get more time to “pass on her values” once the selection process gets down to the final 15, after the second program.
As for the show itself, at the time of this writing, this program is available to watch (without vpn) at
www.qub.ca/tvaplus/tva/star-academie-le-camp-de-selection/saison-1/episode-1-1014900236
It took place in the Queen Elizabeth hotel in Montreal (so an easier commute for Lara than traipsing out to Waterloo). As noted, they originally started with 5500 candidates, and now were down to 60. We get to learn about and see the various teachers in action, with Lara chipping in. All very intelligently done. After some deliberation, at the end, Lara is the one who tells some of the students that they ‘made it’, reducing the number of contestants to 30. We get snatches of song from the various contestants, enough to see some different and quite capable vocal abilities, and personalities.

The teachers of Star Académie amaze us
The Star Académie 2021 adventure began on Sunday on TVA.
This first, which was didactic to say the least, allowed us to get to know briefly the 60 aspiring academics, all very talented and diverse, who hoped to enter the Academy later in the season, but also to discover some professors in this context.
Thus, we were able to see Gregory Charles, Lara Fabian, Ariane Moffatt, as well as the host Patrice Michaud at work. The least we can say is that they dazzled us. First of all, Patrice Michaud is the perfect facilitator, with his charisma, his empathy and his emotivity. He will be fascinating to watch this season.
In his role as voice and music teacher, Gregory Charles was as always passionate, straightforward, positive and determined. We knew him to be multi-talented, but it will be interesting to see him work in this context.
In her role as Director of the Academy, Lara Fabian, magnificent and luminous, made herself unifier, benevolent and encouraging. As for Ariane Moffatt, she makes a firm and energetic teacher. With these, candidates will learn a lot.
Note that at the end of this first episode, the team had to cut off 30 aspirants, a heartbreaking task to say the least. It was Lara Fabian who had the heavy task of announcing the outcome of the discussions. She did it with heart, explaining that a refusal does not mean an end.
Note that among the aspirants, we find William Cloutier, a participant of Mixmania 3 . This one seduced all the professors of the Academy. Lara Fabian even said she fell in love with him. It is to be continued!
The selection camp continues next Sunday at the same time.
-------------------------------
The audience response, based on the comments left on various websites, was also quite positive.
Lara was accompanied by Marie-Eve Riverin in the interpretation workshop; she was
one of 3 sisters who sang backup for Lara on her 50 World Tour, and, presumably will do so again. Some pictures of Lara from the show are available at
www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=243273353834140&set=pcb.243273457167463
All in all, Lara gets some screen time, and her comments are quite cogent, but obviously she will not be as prominent as she was on The Voice shows. Our coverage will therefore be somewhat more perfunctory. As noted in the article, the final cut-down to 15 candidates will take place next Sunday.
The second lead story is associated with Lara’s “Locked Down” sessions. As we know, the CD (and vinyl) were sold out shortly after being announced more than a month ago, and Lara’s team, impressed by that, has decided to make some more, which are now being advertised, e.g.,
www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=259330842217883&set=a.259330815551219
and are immediately available at
www.larafabian.com/boutique/
A number of people (especially in Europe) have complained that they had not received their order from the initial pressing at the end of November. In compensation, Lara did offer people a link for a digital version of the CD as immediate compensation – although some people complained they did not get that link.
The 'Lara Fabian Par Amour' FB site wrote to Lara’s people enquiring about this; they then provided a scan of the response they got:
----------------------------------
Hello,
Due to delays caused by COVID-19, at this time, we are unable to provide you with an exact shipping date for your order. Having said that, we are getting closer and are hopeful that deliveries will start rolling in next week. We will send you an email to notify you as soon as possible. To ensure that this message arrives safely in your emails, please add store@LaraFabian.com to your list of approved senders.
Thank you very much for your continued patience - we look forward to sending you your new music as soon as possible!
Sincerely,
Larafabian.com
------------------------------
Regardless of the delay, it’s good news that the album is proving popular, and so getting another pressing (like a second edition of a book). It’s too good to just slip away. Hopefully Lara may even promote it, though that is less likely.
In other news, in a personal comment for fans, Lara indicated she’s going back to exercising, with a video to prove it,
www.facebook.com/larafabianofficial/videos/124153642880831
She added the comment, both written and spoken, “It's over (for) the chips and Netflix 😂... we're restarting the new year in shape... because I want to be in perfect condition to see you soon on the stages we miss so much... Thank you @joseelavigueur for these formidable coachings.
For now, the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) is under control in Québec, but the present weeks are critical. Community transmission of the virus now extends to all regions of Québec. The latest data of the evolution of COVID‑19 over the past 24 hours in Québec reveals 1,744 new cases, 50 new deaths, with 8 in the last 24 hours, while the number of hospitalizations decreased by 14 compared to the previous day. So while the virus is still rampant, for the time being its effects are not increasing. Of course, if the more contagious version shows up, the results might become much different. All the restrictions noted in the previous News Update are still in place, but they don’t seem to be limiting Lara’s participation, however that’s being worked out.

No doubt Lara will be involved in Star Academie business this next week, in preparation for the cutdown from 30 to 15 contestants in next Sunday’s show. She appears to like working with the team on the program, and with the young talent. The response of the press and the audience seems quite positive. This venture has started out well. Have a good week everybody, and stay safe.
