Two big news events this week. We’ll start with the one that has just happened…
Lara was one of the participants of the charity event, the 30th Anniversary of Refuge des Jeunes de Montréal this past Sunday night. As noted previously, Refuge des Jeunes de Montréal is a day, evening and night shelter founded in 1989. Its mission is to help homeless young men in difficulty aged 17 to 25. The Refuge offers the following services: reception, referrals, psychosocial day care and social housing with community support.
Among her contributions, Lara sang two duets, “Je t’aime” with Dan Bigras, and “Je suis malade” with Marie-Nicole Lemieux. They were polar opposites – while Lara was vocally strong throughout, Dan Bigras can barely sing; he never was very good (IMHO), but apparently a bout with cancer has taken a further toll. Marie-Nicole Lemieux, on the other hand, is a coloratura contralto, and so her voice is quite strong and operatic. Actually, though, neither of the duets worked well, because Lara’s voice did not blend in with either of them when they were singing together. But it was for a good cause .
An article about the program, shown on ICI TV in Quebec, appears on their arts page (https://ici.radio-canada.ca/nouvelle/1756766/show-du-refuge-dan-bigras-30e-edition-sans-public-pandemie):
-------------------------------------------
Complicity at the heart of the Show du Refuge, which celebrates its 30th anniversary tonight
The charity show for the benefit of the Refuge des Jeunes de Montréal will blow out its 30 candles without an audience, as the pandemic obliges. In an adapted formula which relies on the complicity between the artists, the Show du Refuge will be presented on ICI Télé on Sunday at 8 p.m.
Once again hosting the show, Dan Bigras will be surrounded this year by Mélissa Bédard, Brigitte Boisjoli, Lara Fabian, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Bruno Pelletier and Sans Pression, as well as an improbable duo made up of Lulu Hughes and Maka Kotto. The artists will benefit from the accompaniment of 10 singers and 9 musicians.
The show, which is normally held live at Place des Arts, this year was pre-recorded at Théâtre Paradoxe last fall. In an interview with René Homier-Roy, Dan Bigras explains that, without an audience, he could not use the same recipe as usual.
“We always have in our heads, when we imagine a musical performance: a stage, people on it and the crowd in front of them. I absolutely had to break this code [...], so I said to myself: we're going to do a show in a circle,” explains Dan Bigras.
What the show - usually carried by 3000 people screaming at the same time - loses in intensity, the singer says he gains in complicity, since the artists look each other in the eyes.
30 years, 150 artists and $ 7 million
Deprived of cash at the counter, the Refuge des Jeunes sees a substantial part of its funding disappear and therefore calls on the public to make donations online, with the slogan “We are counting on your absence”. Those who want to support the organization's mission can go to noshowdurefuge.ca to buy a virtual ticket.
For three decades now, the Refuge des Jeunes has been helping young men aged 17 to 25, in difficulty and homeless, through various initiatives in the field. To date, over 150 artists and groups have performed at Show du Refuge, which has raised $7 million for young people.
The Show du Refuge is directed by Mario Rouleau and hosted by Dan Bigras, who admits to being “good for another 30 years with this”.

As an aside, Lara has been on this show before, singing with Dan Bigrass. They had a memorable duet of Perdere l’amore at Le Show du Refuge, November 25, 1997 at the
Spectrum de Montréal. Videos are available on youtube, e.g.,
www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkUu6pLjAF4
As one can hear, even then Dan was not able to sing very well , although this duet worked a bit better than their current attempt.
From the comments on the ‘Refuge’ website, fans felt it was an excellent show. As usual, on the Radio-Canada website, the video, like the TV show itself is not available outside of Canada (https://ici.radio-canada.ca/info/videos/media-8350719/dan-bigras-show-refuge-fete-trentieme-anniversaire-jeunes-dons?isAutoPlay=true&fbclid=IwAR2PbWHr4Bsbk6IA8xOuNpVDCvb6_BikgEbsoeQY4aIBfrYp9YLROFLJ7dM}. Independent of any legalistic concerns, it still seems the height of stupidity for a charity show to artificially limit its audience – who knows how many people in other countries would be willing to donate to a charity that Lara is involved with, even a Canadian charity, were they induced to do so by being able to watch the show. The organizers do not appear to take into consideration the appeal of international artists like Lara. Nevertheless, given that this older video showed up on youtube, the current one may eventually do so as well.
The second big event, one that will take place later this week (on Wednesday), is the release of Lara’s new album “Lockdown Sessions”. It got a bit more publicity from an article in “Femme Actuelle” (https://www.femmeactuelle.fr/actu/news-actu/lara-fabian-et-sa-fille-lou-en-duo-comment-le-confinement-leur-a-donne-lidee-2105309?fbclid=IwAR0j5Oxw6F5YkPg020VGvIKQL0WRc28aKyJ1Gb9HNIY0jWq4meAc7-pC5FM), concentrating on her daughter Lou’s involvement:

Lara Fabian and her daughter Lou as a duo: how confinement gave them the idea
Lara Fabian has figured out how to look after herself during the confinement period. According to 7 Jours information released on December 4, 2020, the singer composed an album with Lou, her 13-year-old daughter.
The health crisis has plunged France into a new national confinement since October 2020 . A difficult period for many artists forced to temporarily suspend their activity. If some have found a way to make a professional retraining, others have taken advantage of these moments of social distancing. Patrick Fiori is one of them. Indeed, the star confessed to have found great inspiration for his compositions during the first confinement "I continued to compose, write, I had a freer spirit . This misfortune fed me. Half of the songs of the album were born during confinement. But I still suffered from the separation with the public. It's even unbearable, " he confided on October 2, 2020 to Le Parisian . And another personality also seems to have found how to occupy her moments at home . This is another coach of the show The Voice : Lara Fabian In an interview relayed by 7 Jours, the singer said she spent her days in the company of her daughter.
Lara Fabian creates an album with her daughter Lou
Like many people, Lara Fabian was particularly upset by the global pandemic linked to the coronavirus. But the fifty-something did not let herself be defeated: "When the world entered a completely new and historic era, I was keen to live an original experience, something that I had not had the opportunity to to do before. I wanted to enter into a lively expression, different, and as new as the period " she confided. This is why she composed, along with her daughter, her new album Lockdown Sessions, which is scheduled for release on December 16, 2020: " My daughter sings with me, it's very beautiful. I mixed philosophical themes with great classical arias: Sati, Fauré, Mozart ... I used my voice as an instrument, the themes as repetitive phrases, like fluff". A great first for the singer, and maybe not the last ...
------------------------------------------------------
Actually, Lara does not need any help in selling the physical versions of the new album; according to the FB site “les papillons de lara fabian”, the physical signed copies are already sold out. Of course one can still order the digital versions, available at Lara’s now active URL, larafabian.com. We’ll discuss the album in next week’s update; meanwhile if anyone has opinions about it when it comes out, please don’t hesitate to mention them in the comments section.
In other news, Lara’s (sometimes) weekly interaction with fans involved a picture of food she is eating,
It comes along with the caption, “Tonight, I honor my beautiful home country, Italy, between gorgonzola and tomatoes served with a delicious gluten-free bread from @ baked2gomtl that I recommend ...
A real treat for the taste buds.”
Interesting photo(s) of the week:
From the Lara Fabian italia website, a truly beautiful picture

And still on the topic of visuals, “Macademia” has been working on restoring the quality of some of Lara’s classic concerts, and the results are appearing on youtube. As shown on the site
www.youtube.com/channel/UCBrv1TVOfxqMPGASZ4o9vOg/videos
work has been done on “From Lara With Love”, the 2000 concert, and on the “Mademoiselle Zhivago 2010 concert in Moscow. The videos look quite good.
In the coming week, Lara’s latest album will become available, and the reactions will start coming in. Lara has warned her listeners that this will be a different experience, a ‘specialty’ album, so she has lowered expectations for it. With this perspective in mind, it will be great to hear anything from Lara, regardless of how experimental it turns out to be. And we will also, apparently, get to hear Lou singing. A nice way to start bringing this terrible year to a close. Stay safe everybody.
