A number of items vie for the lead in the news of the past week. Starting with the most immediate, Lara and Garou were the invites on La Voix this past weekend, and Lara sang her song “C’est l’heure” along with Garou and two of the candidates. It can be seen at:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSfT4E4u6t0
The song is catchy, especially with more voices on the chorus. A nice production.
Then, in recognition of its imminent release, there was a promo for the documentary “Lara” to be shown on the “Club illico” channel October 15th. Lara posted it on her FB page, at
www.facebook.com/larafabianofficial/videos/1200150367023508/
and on Instagram at
The accompanying caption reads:

By providing a link, the caption raises the question of whether this channel is available outside of Canada. On going to that site, they suggest one download the app (for the ipad or iphone). It turns out that app is not available outside of Canada. But the page also offers the possibility of subscribing directly to the channel ($15/month). They even let you enter your name, define a password, and provide information for payment. However, before completing that last part, I checked on their website (https://illicoweb.videotron.com/help?skipSocialLinks=true), where one can find the following:
------------------------------------------
Why am I unable to view content on illico.tv outside Canada?
Because of contractual agreements with our content providers, the content on illico.tv (Video on Demand and live content) is only accessible in Canada.
However, access to the program guide and the remote recording function is not geographically restricted.
--------------------------------------------
I’m not sure what the last part (“remote recording function”) means, but the answer seems clear that this channel would not be available outside of Canada. I don’t know whether they would even accept payment from elsewhere (and I’m not willing to pay them to find out). If anybody from outside that country is willing to try it and finds that it works, please let us know!
As for the promo content itself, the truly big surprise is how much Lou is in evidence, and thus how much Lara’s family life is displayed. Otherwise it seems like a wonderfully professional production. It’s too bad that the postponed shows in Paris could not be included - they apparently do cover the February 5th show there, as Paris is mentioned as one of the locales of the tour in the promo - and it looks like they are including footage from New York and Moscow in addition to the birthday show in Brussels. All in all, a beautiful homage to Lara, which hopefully will become available in one form or another for people all over the world to see.
An article concerning Lara’s relationship with the producer of this film, Jean-Phillippe Dion, appeared in the Journal of Quebec (https://www.journaldequebec.com/2020/10/10/lara-fabian-et-jean-philippe-dion-une-relation-de-confiance?fbclid=IwAR2SXcBLZOommZwVFSHaPvg5Q0OSmAsca8C__530ECOc5OPvqcV3-vyBpb8). Here’s the translation:
----------------------------------------
Lara Fabian and Jean-Philippe Dion: a relationship of trust
Lara Fabian knew she could trust Jean-Philippe Dion the first time she met him. It was in Brussels, in 2013. The host had interviewed her for Unlimited Access. Seven years later, the singer remembers this moment, when a documentary around her and produced by Dion is about to be released. “I looked into his eyes and listened to my heart,” Lara Fabian told The Journal. “It is difficult to explain. It's like having a friendly crush on someone."
Jean-Philippe Dion also keeps fond memories of the report produced for TVA, which had rallied 3.5 million viewers on TF1 when it was picked up in France.
"The current had passed," indicates the vice-president, for content and strategy, at Productions Déferlantes. “Lara had agreed to bring up her eating disorder, a topic she had never talked about publicly before."
Desire for truth
History repeated on a larger scale in "Lara", a film of an hour and a half for the Club illico channel, recounting the career of the artist, who celebrated in January her 50th anniversary in the heart of a world tour.
At the documentary's first production meeting, a few days before starting her ambitious series of shows, the Belgian-Canadian diva showed off her colors: she wanted truth, honesty and authenticity.
“I knew exactly what I was getting into,” she said in a telephone interview. “I had no problem crossing that line. Because it was my wish. I didn't want to show anything made up, slicked and hyper-controlled. For me, it had no interest."
A merry go round tour
“Lara” shows us the star with or without make-up in different contexts and moods: unhappy with the technical problems behind the scenes of the concert she gives at the Beacon Theater in New York, in Sicily during her Christmas holidays, or even at home in Montreal, baking pancakes for Lou, her 12-year-old daughter, and Gabriel Di Giorgio, her partner.
Since Videotron has imposed an embargo on certain portions of the film, you will have to wait until October 16 to know some of Lara Fabian's shocking revelations. A few days before the launch, that's probably why the latter claims to have a "lump in the stomach". She compares her feeling to that of the top of a roller coaster.
“When I'm done on the merry-go-round, I know I'm going to feel more free,” she said.
Among the segments of the documentary that can be rumored, let us point out this broken-down conversation captured in Europe, when Lara Fabian, who produces her own tour, learns that she has been the victim of fraud, or again when she mentions her mother, who died of a degenerative disease close to Alzheimer's in 2019.
Watching this segment of the documentary has not been pleasurable for the singer-songwriter.
"It's one of the great pains that refuses to be erased, but which end up being a part of you", she philosophizes today.
Exceeded expectations
By his own admission, Jean-Philippe Dion did not believe that Lara Fabian would engage as much at the start of the adventure.
“I had questions, areas I wanted to explore… but honestly, she surprised me. She kept her word. She did not dodge any question”, insists the host.
Once the post-production of the documentary was finished, in the spring, Productions Déferlantes sent the final cut to Lara Fabian.
The main interested party watched it as a family, and despite some rather sensitive passages, she did not want to cut anything. “After the movie, my daughter said to me, 'I didn't know you went through all that. I now understand better who my mom is’. It overwhelmed me to hear that."
The documentary also allowed Lara Fabian to confirm certain things about herself, including some behaviors that she wants to change.
“I am sometimes hard on myself. And this harshness can be my worst enemy”, she observes.
The real Lara
The next director of Star Académie wants “Lara” to allow people to discover her true nature, the one we don't always get to see in the spotlight.
“I was very moved when I realized that they had called the documentary “Lara”. Because that's who I am, Lara. "
“When I finished the film, I thought: I'm pretty strong. And I have quite a journey, anyway."
The documentary Lara lands on Club illico on Thursday.
-------------------------
Sounds very intriguing – Lara has great courage! And her attitude is representative of the saying, “The truth will set you free”.
The timing of when it was finished (in the spring) indicates they were not waiting around for her Paris shows in September, once the spring shows were postponed (though one wonders whether something could have been added were they to have taken place last month).
In support of this program, at least partially, Lara was on the show "Ça finit bien la semaine" on TVA. Some pictures from the program can be found on the Lara Fabian est ton autre” FB site at:
www.facebook.com/larafabiantonautre/photos/pcb.3322309931155981/3322309404489367/
This was probably the source for much of what the above article contained. Nevertheless, here’s a more in depth discussion of what was revealed:
**Also on the show was Jean-Philippe Dion, so of course the main topic was the discussion of “Lara”. The hostess noted it was a very beautiful film, and wondered where the idea for the project came from? He said he noticed that Lara’s 50 World Tour had been announced, and he thought it didn’t make sense not to immortalize it. It took a while to get together with her, but eventually he did and Lara OK’d it, saying “We are going to do it and you will see, it will be 100% me, without barriers, without filter.” He wondered whether she was just saying that, but he learned that he really had something.
**Lara said that “it was a team that became a bit like part of the family, visible and invisible when necessary, and because of that I even managed sometimes to use the interface of the camera as a confidant. And at the same time, it also allowed me to rebrush, to retrace the course which, for me, is the most incredible course for a human, eh? It is the course, finally, towards oneself, it’s a bit like that, because it is good, a career, it is good to have a name, and a first name, but what is it that’s behind this person? Who is the artist after all? And that’s what they did. And I was saying how touched I was to see that he decided to call it “Lara” because it’s the first time someone has called me just by my first name. But me, I’m just that, actually, that’s who I am, I’m just Lara”.
**The host noted that Lara allowed herself to be shown with some intimacy, in a nightgown, brushing her teeth, without makeup, without her hair done. He wondered whether it was dizzying for her to know that the public was going to see her ‘au naturel’?
**Lara said, “No, because I find that when you let yourself go at this point in your life where you have an incredible opportunity to be just human in the eyes of all – and that is also who I am perhaps also, even one of the reasons, I would say, perhaps even one of the pillar of my career, it is this link, you know this proximity. That was why when he came to my house while we were making the omelet, that I have false eyelashes, and…[hiding it] doesn’t work, you know, it doesn’t make sense.
**Lara continued, “But me, what astounded me the most about what we have just experienced is my daughter’s reaction. For my daughter, who gets along very well with me, the only thing that interests her is that I’m her mother, the rest, she does not care as it is not possible. In this case she wanted to watch it, it is rare. You know she said to me, “Mom, can I sit with you?” because I had to watch it to talk about it. Then she absolutely did not look at her phone once, she did not get up to get water or her phone or anything. And when it was over, she just said to me, “You know, Mom, she said, I never imagined you had been through all of this. And in fact today I can just tell you that I understand better, I can better understand who my mom is". She said to me, “It’s crazy that you went through all this.“
**The host also mentioned that Lara discovered there had been fraud for her shows in Europe. Lara said it was not just in Europe, it was more general in fact. She explained that the “pivotal agent”, which all companies have, is the one who makes all the international booking with other agents, who collects the budgets and then passes it on to the producer, so that the producer can finance his crews and his tour. [And for her tours, Lara is the producer]. She said, “and this gentleman decided he was buying a plane rather than [pass it on] ... I think he may well have decided that… I really don't know what he decided, but he decided he wasn't giving us the money for the production. I'm not talking about myself, I'm talking about the money for the production so that I can pay others. Me, forget that. I’m no longer even in it, in what is the final economy for an artist whose livelihood it is. There, it's for the producer who says, "But me, how am I going to do it?" So at that moment, you pick up, you say: OK, I take out my personal credit card and that's it and that's all. Because there is no other way. And that's how I found out in the fact that the hotel wasn’t paid, it started like that, in fact. I discovered that this man in question had taken all the money which was due to the producer and the promoter.”
**The host asked if there were times Lara had just wanted to say screw it all? That something like that is heavy, and then after that you still have to go and perform? They joked that she couldn’t do that, because there was Jean-Philippe, whispering into her ear, “we have a documentary, keep going!”. But Lara then took the question seriously, and wondered whether there was a time when she wanted to abandon it all. But she said it wasn’t in her nature. She said, that, instead, at that moment, she desired more to be seeking justice. She said, “I tried everything, I really tried everything, to parley, to understand. Then at some point you know, you call a lawyer, you have no choice.”
**Lara said despite this fraud she did all the shows, because people had paid for them. [We know this is not actually true. Her show in Greece scheduled for 2/1/20, and the concert in Bucharest scheduled for 2/3/20, were not held, and the problem would presumably have affected some of the ~7 other shows she had in Eastern Europe for the next several months if the pandemic hadn’t intervened and cancelled them first. See the News Update of 2/4/20 for more details].
**They asked Jean-Philippe what he was thinking when he sent the final cut to Lara to see it. He indicated he was scared that she wouldn’t remember or like some of the things that went on, and when she approved it, his people asked him, are you sure? Lara then said, “As I said earlier, you have to abandon yourself, and, yes, there are things that might surprise a few people, but, yes, it makes you strong.”
**The second part of the interview was about Lara becoming ‘director’ for the Star Academie. She said when she was small if she had heard she was to become director of a school she would not have loved the idea. But she sees herself really as a resource that can help awaken the potential, to be a mother, a big sister when called for, and also a girl who has had a certain amount of experience that she could transmit. And she’s part of a team of professionals.
**Jean-Phillipe said that “Academicians should see the documentary, because it will prepare them for the reality of show business.” Lara agreed, and said they may think, “Wow, okay, got to be strong”. And also the fact of seeing that here, at 50 years old, her career is still going on. And she said “they will see I have a veritable joy of living and communicating because I believe that what impacts us will not necessarily kill us and will feed us with the best so that we can become ourselves. Me, my goal I confess to you this evening. My goal is to make each of these wonderful Academicians become themselves. That is my goal, to contribute as best I can to make them themselves."
**Lara and Jean-Philippe also noted that it is the first time in the history of the Star Academie that there is what is called “artist support”. Each Star Academician will receive $10,000 – a concrete gift to allow them to develop their art. Finalists will get $50,000 and the winner will get $125,000. Thus they will have sufficient resources to record an album. Other things will be announced concerning albums, other prizes, so it will be a good base for the Academicians to function.
**They then turned the tables on Jean-Philippe, and the program hosts said they had made a documentary about him; Lara was the first to read the humorous narration. It was noted he did a documentary on Celine to begin his career, and had been the announcer for the daily Star Academie reports some 15 years ago. And in 2020 he decided to produce the Star Academie. He even had a meal out with Lara once she accepted.
So… the person who did the documentary is also the person who invited Lara to be the director of the Star Academie – everything worked together.

In other news, the Lara Fabian Par Amour site reported that Maria Doyle Maria Doyle candidate for Lara Fabian in "The Voice : la plus belle voix" is one of the candidates to represent France in the Eurovision Song Contest. Good luck to her!
Interesting photo(s) of the week: from the Lara Fabian America site

(one wonders whether the fact that Lara and Gabriel dog Kayla is a support dog will be discussed in the documentary);
And then a video: There’s a re-mastered version of “Je t’aime” available at:

The picture seems much sharper.
We’ll see whether the documentary “Lara” will be made available to a larger audience in the next week, after it airs. At the very least there will likely be reviews of it. Have a safe week everybody.

(one wonders whether the fact that Lara and Gabriel dog Kayla is a support dog will be discussed in the documentary);
