The big news of course for Lara this past week was Sunday night’s finale of “La Voix”. But before that…
This past evening, Lara posted the following picture on Instagram
with the (translated) caption:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
“Maurane, wonderful Maurane,
I can not believe I will not hear you laugh any more, and sing. I can not believe I will no longer hear you say to me, "How goes my croquette? Do we peter the bubbles?"
You who had just retaken the path of your voice .... you who lived to delight us .... you who were one of those rare artists, bigger than music .... not without you ...
I'm sitting here in my little white office in Montreal, I do not want to realize that you are no more.... I can not ... I tell myself that you're going to call and bother me, because 'we do not see each other enough... “but life”
But this fucking life!!!
Mau, I still want us ... still standing face to face, you my other, diving into my big lake, me your other, coiled in your cello...
I do not want your absence
I want our crazy laugh and our voices mixed..... I want our strange link....
A part of my life has just left with you and I will never be there again ...
I love you.
Lara,
Your croquette
PS: Know that I will come to find you there...”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lara’s tribute has gotten a very wide play in the press and on the Internet…(e.g., www.youtube.com/watch?v=3leHt791zVQ)
Yes, Maurane passed away yesterday at the age of 57. According to reports she was found dead in bed at her home in Schaerbeek, near Brussels; the cause was still being investigated. She had just returned to the stage the day before after an absence of more than two years due to vocal chord problems. She was at a tribute for the Belgian singer Jacques Brel and she mentioned she was considering producing a cover album for him, he who also died too young (at age 49). Not only was Maurane a great friend of Lara’s, but she joined her on the song “Tu es mon autre”, and took flak for it from her fans who were down on Lara at the time. A wonderful person, outspoken, full of dignity, and compassion, she will be missed…[see also the article about her from RTBF in Belgium, at www.rtbf.be/info/medias/detail_ne-pas-publier?id=9912206]
In a way, this is the ‘other side’ of the show “La Voix”, which celebrates the professional ‘birth’ of artists. So let’s move on to that…First, here are several articles that preceded the airing. of the finale. Marco Duplessis on the LFIAG SELECT site posted a link to the following article from the Tribune in Montreal: (https://www.pressreader.com/canada/la-tribune2636/20180505/282041917758202), translated below:

Lara Fabian, Favorite of La Voix
Appearances were not deceiving: Lara Fabian had fun like a crazy person during all this season of La Voix,, which ends tomorrow on TVA, from 19 h. Several already see Yama Laurent, of Garou’s team, winning the final, but the other three candidates might surprise. All have their colors, their personalities, whether it's Jonathan Freeman from Eric's team, Yann Brassard of Alex's team or Miriam Baghdassarian of Lara's team, who won over Felix Lemelin last Sunday. Lara Fabian, who was reconnecting with the Quebec public after a long absence, was a real favorite at La Voix. Perfectly comfortable in this imposing chair, with great empathy for the candidates and perfectly competitive, the singer leaves packed with her experience. With reason.
Q: Lara, you seem to have benefited the most from your coaching experience. Did it happen as you expected?
LF: Even better. I went back there as we enter a confectionery. Already, in the last years, I gave master classes left and right in schools, conservatories, totally free, because I wanted to transmit what I had learned. And I was happy to do that. When I was called to do La Voix, I really saw the parallel, and it really joined what I would like to do in the second half of my career.
Q: Éric Lapointe and you had a little rivalry. Do you take pleasure in the provocation?
LF: We have fun, it's a game without any malice. It makes us both laugh backstage. We say as we leave each other: "Worse, next week, what is it that one will throw in the face? "I really like Eric Lapointe, I've known him for a long time. It was fun to meet again. Alex Nevsky is a beautiful person, extremely bright, a very healthy boy who has a particular humor that I like a lot. Garou, I knew him a little, but I liked being able to be alongside his humanity, his availability. Garou is really someone very open, caring.
Q: So you're ready for a second season.
LF: It does not depend on me! I think it's fun to be rooted in something for a moment. If it were proposed to me, I would consider it with interest, for sure.
Q: What elements made the difference for Miriam to reach the final?
LF: Miriam is unique, different, irresistible. She comes to snatch us into her universe. There is something deeply solar and a bit crazy about her. And I think we are at a time when we need people like that, who make us dream, who break codes. She is not afraid of not being like the others, she does not pretend to correspond to anything, with a real humility.
Q: What advice will you give her on Sunday?
LF: Stay focused. She is a child who can sometimes misaligns, for factors parallel to her talent. She can get distracted. She must not hesitate at any time to stay herself.
Q: Is the song you wrote for her a ballad?
LF: Not at all. It may be surprising, but I thought it was not suitable for Miriam. It's the party, it's the finale, needs something that allows her to shine, to move, to be Miriam.
Q: Would you love to work some more with the other candidates on your team?
LF: I would love that a lot. I’ve already written a song for Felix, who touched me profoundly. I love very much Jean-Alexandre [Boisclair] and Redgee, they are truly magnificent artists which whom I will remain in contact.
Q: We had not seen you in Quebec for a long time. Do you intend to stay or leave?
LF: I have so much happiness living here, my husband and my little daughter are fine here. That is a very strong consideration. But I remain quite open to what life proposes to me. If I had based myself on my last move to southern Europe, I would not have had the chance to come back to Quebec and live La Voix. When the phone rang, I was very open and I practice the same kind of opening. I'm waiting to see how life aligns, without rushing, without worrying myself.
For this final, Charles Lafortune will receive a whole host of stars, including Ginette Reno, the French star Cristophe Mae (Miriam interpreted the success Il est ou le bonheur in the semifinal), Coeur de Pirate, Corneille, Ludovick Boourgeois, winner from last year, the new sensation Hubert Lenoir, as well as Patsy Gallant and Nico Archambault for a special performance of Saturday Night Fever.
---------------------------------------------
As indicated, Lara wrote a song for Miriam, and in fact that was the approach for each of the judges for the final, as discussed in this article (http://showbizz.net/2018/05/04/la-voix-6-un-avant-gout-des-chansons-ecrites-par-les-coachs-pour-la-finale/), again translated below (and thanks to Sil Vério on the LFIAG SELECT site for the link):

La Voix 6: A TASTE OF THE SONGS WRITTEN BY THE COACHES FOR THE FINAL
This Sunday, the finalists will sing a piece written especially for them by their coach.
In an interview with Échos Vedettes magazine , the four coaches revealed some details about the song they composed for their protege.
Alex Nevsky says that the piece he wrote for his candidate Yann Brassard is "dancing and energetic". Singer-songwriter Yann Perreau has collaborated on this French song that we can not wait to discover on Sunday. Alex Nevsky unveiled a new pop and colorful piece titled "Immoderate Love" this week. Listen to it here.
On the side of Lara Fabian, she promises us a song that is part of the flowing energy of her candidate Miriam Baghdassarian. The piece in question will be titled "Je veux tout donne". Interestingly, the coach decided to write a song for Felix Lemelin, eliminated in the semifinals. The piece, which she developed with her spouse, is titled " Je rentre chez nous."
Yama Laurent will, for her part, interpret a hymn of hope, composed by Garou. The latter said he wrote a piece with a strong message that his candidate would want to defend.
Éric Lapointe will offer Jonathan Freeman a ballad marked by the melodic signature of the Quebec rocker. Michel Rivard helped his friend compose the original song. You can see the lyrics of last year's winner song written by Lapointe here .
Recall that, following the results of last week's votes, we have a good idea of who will win the final of the sixth edition of La voix ce dimanche.
--------------------------------------------
They predicted that Yama would win, and they noted that Lara had said that she was “bigger than music”.
Then it was on to the finale. Lara posted several pictures of herself, getting made up and ready to go, at:
www.facebook.com/larafabianofficial/photos/pcb.2040655749309245/2040655072642646/?type=3&theater
As for that finale: here’s the (translated) article from (http://www.journaldequebec.com/2018/05/06/yama-laurent-remporte-la-grande-finale-de-la-voix) describing the results:
------------------------------------------------
Yama Laurent wins the grand finale of "La Voix" with 60% of the public vote
Unsurprisingly, it was Yama Laurent who won top honors on Sunday during the finale of the La Voix.
With 60% of the popular vote, the candidate of the team of Garou was consecrated, live, big winner of the sixth edition of the popular song contest.
It's the song ‘Un peu de nous’, which was written for her by her coach Garou, which led Yama to victory. Yama also performed beautifully Sunday, as the four finalists clashed to become the new voice of Quebec.
Yama Laurent left no chance to her opponents, Miriam, Yann and Jonathan.
It must be said that the Quebec public adopted Yama at the Blind Auditions stage. It was however during her Duel with Kelly Bado that she really entered the hearts of Quebecers.
Indeed, the performance of the two candidates capsized all of Quebec and gave rise to one of the most touching moments in the history of La Voix.

And a related article (https://rezonodwes.com/canada-pour-la-premiere-fois-une-haitienne-sacree-championne-a-la-voix-quebec/) (translated below):

For the first time, a Haitian crowned champion at "La Voix Québec"
May 6, 2018 Rezo Nodwes
Other talents of Haitian origins, such as Tamara Wébert-Fillion, Noémie Lorzema and Sylvie Desgrosseilliers, have tried it, but it is finally Yama Laurent, 27, who won the contest "La Voix" Sunday in Quebec
Almost unsurprisingly, Yama Laurent, the incredible newcomer to Canada, won the sixth season of Quebec's most popular music contest, "La Voix".
Miriam Baghdassarian, Yann Brassard, Jonathan Freeman, three other finalists, handpicked like Yama after several weeks of performances in front of the public, live or recorded, gave the best of themselves to become The Voice of the Year 2018.
Born on September 4, 1990 in Léogane, Yama Laurent, who studied health at the Technical University of Santiago in the Dominican Republic, captivated the crowd from her first appearance on February 11th. Sunday after Sunday, she continued her work of seduction and detached herself from the lot of talents to assert herself as an outstanding personality and a voice out of the ordinary.
"Un peu de nous", the song that was written for her for the finale by the famous crooner Garou, her coach since the beginning of the season, put an end to the ambitions of the other competitors of Yama.
Note that a constellation of artists illuminated the great evening of the final, starting with the queen of Quebec song, Ginette Reno!
The audience was also able to find on stage the most popular French singer of the last decade, Christophe Maé; the talented Coeur de pirate, who is celebrating her 10-year career anniversary this year; the brilliant mentor Corneille, who will soon be launching a new album; the winner of La Voix 5, Ludovick Bourgeois; the astonishing musical revelation Hubert Lenoir; the disco queen Patsy Gallant and the great dance star Nico Archambault with the cast of Saturday Night Fever.
------------------------------------------------------
So the predictions came true. But the evening was far from being only about the candidates, as there were other stellar performances by the more established stars. Here’s a more complete (translated) discussion (http://plus.lapresse.ca/screens/d963f894-72c0-4dc9-8158-da4c7e9324a8__7C___0.html):

La Voix
YAMA, THE DIVA IN BALLET SHOES
HUGO DUMAS
THE PRESS
Pinch someone! As predicted for several weeks, the timid but talented Yama Laurent was crowned last night the most beautiful voice of Quebec with 60% of the popular vote.
At the announcement of the result by Charles Lafortune, the 27-year-old singer, born in Haiti, did not flinch and did not shed tears, as the news sounded. Her speech was succinct, almost whispered. For her, this victory is "like an adoption" by Quebecers.
In six seasons of La Voix on TVA, this is the first time that a competitor born outside the country is escaping with the highest honors. Moreover, the four finalists of yesterday all had different origins, either Armenian (Miriam), or Dominican (Jonathan) or Haitian (Yann and Yama). The other five editions of La Voix have all been won by so-called "native" artists.
Since her impressive blind audition ( Bob Dylan's Forever Young ), Yama and her low voice have won the hearts of viewers. Her difficult personal story also stirred her fans.
Survivor of the 2010 earthquake, she went through a difficult childhood with her father, about whom she speaks very little. She later returned to her mother, who still lives in Haiti and yesterday sent her a message of encouragement by video. Again here, Yama received the shock of seeing her mom without blinking.
Yama Laurent, who started medical school at the University of Santiago in the Dominican Republic, is the antistar par excellence. She often fixes her ballet flats and with difficulty sustains the public eye. Her extreme shyness could, however, become a big obstacle if she does not tame it.
The course of Yama was without fault in La Voix . From “Let It Be” in a duel with Kelly Bado, passing by “Ils s’aiment” of Daniel Lavoie and “A Change Is Gonna Come”, she never cracked under pressure.
By choosing Garou as a coach, because his songs accompanied her in moments of turbulence, Yama offered him a first win at his first participation in La voix québécoise.
The song that Garou composed for his protege, “Un peu de nous”, contained interesting retro sounds. Yama mastered it, often without musical accompaniment, but was not as touching and vibrant as usual.
Alex Nevsky and Lara Fabian offered their candidates two excellent pieces, the two best of the lot: “Amanda” for Yann Brassard, 24, and “Je veux donner” for Miriam Baghdassarian, 19 years old. Amanda is a pop song filled with sunshine, which fits perfectly with the energy of Yann, a dance ace like his idol, Michael Jackson.
One detects in”Je veux donner” the sharp sense of the melody of Lara Fabian, who composed herself many of her greatest hits.
As for the heartbreaking ballad “Ouvre-moi”, co-written by Éric Lapointe and Michel Rivard, it lacks "oumpf" and we had trouble hearing the words sung by Jonathan Freeman, 25 years old.
The great evening yesterday was outrageously dominated by women. Miriam finished second (20%), followed by Yann (13%) and Jonathan (7%)
It is Ginette Reno who initiated this explosive finale of 2 h 30 min with a potpourri of “L-essential”, “Fais-moi la tendresse”, “Je ne suis qu’une chanson”. The great lady of Quebec showbiz was imperial, impeccable and elegant.
It looks so easy for Ginette Reno, who still picks up all the difficult notes. And it was not easy for the four candidates to lean on such a powerful and just voice. Mission impossible, even. The gap was huge between the recruits and the pioneer.
Lara Fabian redid “Je suis malade” accompanied by Geneviève Leclerc, semi-finalist for Marc Dupré in La Voix 4 .
It's crazy how much we forgot that Lara Fabian sang almost sinfully. A solid number.
Rising star of Quebec pop, Hubert Lenoir, 23, a member of the band The Seasons, did “Fille de personne II”, an almost instantaneous earworm. He has the sense of the show, this theatrical Hubert Lenoir with his androgynous look, his extra-large mechanics outfit and his explicit movements. But a bit of provocation has never killed anyone. And long live diversity.
Éric Lapointe has returned with last year's champion, Ludovick Bourgeois, on “Desert Song”. Lapointe also sang “La belle folie”, from his new album “Délivrance “. And he gave everything, our Eric.
Coeur de pirate and Alex Nevsky crossed their songs “Premonition” and “Immoderate Love”, and it was very pretty. Patsy Gallant followed the Saturday Night Fever troupe with her classic “Sugar Daddy”, which set the studio on fire.
Everything was rolling at full speed until Corneille tore it down, on his own song, “Parce qu’on vient de loin”. Fortunately, Garou put all this back on track with his natural charisma and self-assurance.
--------------------------------------
Videos of most or all of these performances will eventually find their way onto the web, but the performance of Miriam is already available on Daily Motion, at
www.dailymotion.com/video/x6j0feo
Lara’s performance of “Je suis malade” with Geneviève Leclerc was sensational. It blew up on Twitter, and her album 'Camouflage' went to #1 on the Canadian music charts. The video can be seen (for as long as it lasts there) at:

In somewhat related news, Nicolas Navarro on LFIAG Select reported that for Ginette Reno’s opening performance on the show, Rick Allison was backstage. Wonder how that went…although he and Lara are supposedly all o.k. now, and there have been other rumors concerning them, that at this point are not worth repeating.
We noted some weeks ago that Lara’s URL site, larafabian.com, had not been updated in many months. Well, it now has been, at least to the extent that it includes notice of her fall concerts in Quebec. The bio, and everything else on that site, are still in English. However…without any fanfare, Lara has opened another URL site, this one in Canada, i.e., www.larafabian.ca (it was shown on the screen at La Voix). As one might imagine that one is all in French. Here’s the contact information it lists:

One wonders with which company will Lara’s next French album be associated? Will it be 9prod; Warner France; or Musicor? The way things are going, it would certainly seem as if would be Musicor, at least in Canada. Ever since her unfortunate interactions with Sony and Universal, Lara has appeared to maintain control over her product, using the record companies primarily for distribution, so it’s certainly feasible that it will be a mix of companies, depending on the country of release. For Camouflage that worked o.k. as far as the digital release was concerned, but not so well for the physical CD.
Interesting photo(s) of the week: Lara with Genevieve Leclerc at their duo of “Je suis malade”:

Lara’s being in the Canadian spotlight is now over, at least as far as a regular TV appearance is concerned. It will be interesting to see how much exposure she gets from here on in. She will be away for a while – perhaps first for Maurane’s funeral in Belgium, then at her upcoming concerts starting in Amsterdam in 10 days, followed by the two concerts in Greece. She’s then off for a couple of weeks before returning to the stage in Europe with concerts in Brussels, Prague and finally Paris in mid-June. She still has a French album to prepare, if she really expects it to be out in the fall – presumably that will be recorded in Quebec, although nobody has actually said so. After that, as Lara indicated in her interview, she is “waiting to see how life aligns, without rushing, without worrying myself.” As the case of Maurane shows, there’s no telling, really, what that will be.

Videos of most or all of these performances will eventually find their way onto the web, but the performance of Miriam is already available on Daily Motion, at
