Lara’s “Quebec” fairy tale continued this past week, both with another edition of La Voix, and with various articles and shows discussing her return. We’ll start with them…
Lara’s FB page linked to one such article in the Journal of Quebec (http://www.journaldequebec.com/2018/04/21/la-renaissance) or equally, the Journal of Montreal (http://www.journaldemontreal.com/2018/04/21/la-renaissance); here’s the translation:

Lara Fabian: the Rebirth
MARC-ANDRÉ LEMIEUX
Saturday, April 21, 2018 01:00
Some artists leave no one indifferent. Lara Fabian is one of them. In 30 years of career, the singer was as venerated as hated. Often for the same reasons. But for some time now, her detractors seem to have exhausted their ammunition, and for a rare time, praise monopolizes the space. La Voix illustrates this new reality.
During a recent show, a contestant from Eric Lapointe freshly eliminated even said she was happy to have participated in the contest for having "breathed the same air as Lara Fabian”. When we talk about tribute, we can hardly find better.
In an interview with the Journal , the Belgian-Canadian star reveals that she would have had a hard time accepting such a compliment in the mid-1990s, when she was a resounding success in Quebec and was about to conquer Europe.
"A career is made up of different phases," explains the 48-year-old artist. At first, I think we are extremely surprised at so much affection. Then it can become a form of pressure. It brings out a fear of disappointing."
After selling 12 million albums, singing around the world and winning a plethora of prizes, Lara Fabian no longer seems to fear expectations. Probably because she has nothing to prove. Today, she welcomes the tributes with gratitude, especially since she knows the ephemeral nature of the job she carries out.
"I will soon be 50 years old. Knowing that each step has an end and that it is not necessarily repeated each time, when life offers you such a gift, whether it is a tender comment or even a letter, you say thank you. When I get a nice compliment, I have a thought for the one I was, the young woman who listened to Peter Gabriel's 'Do not Give Up' and for whom it really meant something ... "
Back home
This wave of love also affects her return to Quebec. After 15 years in Belgium, Lara Fabian returned to the Belle Province last fall. The move was smooth, both for Lou, her 10-year-old daughter, and Gabriel Di Giorgi, her illusionist spouse.
"I did not know they were going to welcome me like that”, the singer shines. “They stop me all the time to tell me that they love me. I was at the Munich airport this winter and four passing Quebecers said to me: "We are so happy that you came back." Back ... They made me so happy by using this word. Me, that's how I felt, but when you're gone for 15 years, you do not know what to expect."
With serenity
After overcoming many obstacles in recent years, including health problems that could have torpedoed her career, Lara Fabian exudes soothing serenity in person. The winner of several Félix awards is more appreciative of the present moment. She also cherishes every second spent on stage, a place from which she moved away in 2013 and 2014 due to severe hearing shocks.
"The moment of the concert, its uniqueness, is something that I did not grasp at a younger age. For people, the emotion transfer that we bring on stage is infinitely more important than a new tune that lands on Spotify. Especially since now, there are three billion coming out every minute!"
Songwriter
Many tend to forget about it, but Lara Fabian did not just put her voice on some of the most memorable ballads of the 1990s and 2000s. She also wrote them. From Immortelle to Tu t’en vas, while passing by Je t’aime, Tout and J’y crois encore, the singer is behind all her hits in French. She also co-authored each of Camouflage's tracks, her most recent English-language album released in October. Failing to ignite the charts, this album received a favorable response from critics.
When asked if she believes that her talents as a singer-songwriter have ever been recognized, Lara Fabian hesitates.
"I never pressed it," she replies. Even when I saw that people did not necessarily know that I was writing my songs, I did not care. Because I did not want them to feel that I needed to claim something or that I wanted to sweeten sugar. I made peace with all that."
If I were a man...
Would the qualities of Lara Fabian's songwriter be more welcome if she were a man? In front of this question, the interested principal sketched a smile.
"Maybe ... Because I'm a woman, it's complicated ... But after, do we spend our time whining? Or are we trying to get through gracefully? I prefer to find ways to navigate through this."
"I want to focus on what people like about me, not what they do not like," she says. That's what I learned as I got older. They do not like you? So what? It does not matter. It took me a long time to think like that. It does not happen at 26 when you sell 4 million of a single album and, overnight, everyone has an opinion about you."
From Los Angeles to Moscow
At the Beacon Theater in New York, Lara Fabian began her new world tour in February. In recent weeks, the singer has stopped in Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, Moscow, Kiev, Bucharest and Budapest. Next month, she is expected in Amsterdam and Athens, before visiting Prague, Paris, Berlin and Antwerp later this summer.
"I realize how fortunate I am to have a tour around the world that brings together 5,000, 6,000 and 7,000 people a night," says the Belgian-Canadian star. The reactions are very strong. Maybe even more than before. It's a lot of fun. "
Lara Fabian's performances in Montreal and Quebec City next October will be different from those of the Camouflage World Tour, which consists mostly of songs in English.
"In Quebec, my desire is to celebrate my return with my fans," says the singer, who promises to revisit her French repertoire, with hits like Leila, Saisir le jour, La Difference and Humana.
The song she has no choice but to make
->Pas sans toi
(From the Carpe diem album , published in 1994)
"Because my fans took it word for word for them. It's their song. I can sing it in Bulgaria, Russia, Romania, Belgium, France or even Greece ... Everyone connects."
A less known song she likes to offer
->Broken Vow
(Excerpt from Lara Fabian , her first album in English, published in 1999)
"Because it has not been popularized by me. It was Josh Groban who made it known. And nobody knows that I wrote it. When I sing Broken Vow on stage, I can almost hear the world doing: "Huh?!" And I explain why I wrote this song, when it happened, and so on. These are my aficionados who know that it's my turn."
A success she does not want to do anymore
-> Tout
(From the Pure album , published in 1996)
"This is my first big success in France. But it's a song with which the connection is harder today. I have a little more trouble getting in there. I know that eventually, I'll do it again, but for now, it's more complicated to pick up. Perhaps because it evokes a moment in which I am less solid. What's great about music is when you become resilient with a song. For example, I am resilient with Je t’aime. There is nothing that hurts me in this song that I wrote. On the contrary, it just makes me feel good. With Tout, this is not quite the case."
------------------------------------------------------
The fact that Lara no longer wants to sing “Tout” actually became news in France, e.g., amp.purepeople.com/article/lara-fabian-cette-chanson-culte-qu-elle-ne-veut-plus-chanter_a283051/1.
And another article from the Journal of Montreal (http://www.journaldemontreal.com/2018/04/20/lara-fabian-reconnaissante-envers-lemission-la-voix), the translation:

Lara Fabian Grateful For The Show La Voix
The artist speaks of one of the greatest gifts she has received in her career
Although it is far from over, the adventure La Voix has already exceeded the expectations of Lara Fabian.
"This invitation to become a coach is by far one of the best gifts I have been given in the last ten years," says the singer in an interview published Saturday in the Weekend section.
Coach alongside Alex Nevsky, Eric Lapointe and Garou, the Belgian-Canadian star has discovered a passion for "giving to the next".
"Seeing Redgee, Jean-Alexandre, Miriam or Félix catch the ball when I give them a little advice about anything, something that I had the opportunity to experience over 25 years ... It's extremely rewarding . It brings me a lot, a lot of joy. When I leave for La Voix , I run in the aisle so much I'm happy. "
"It goes back to being useful for someone," she says. Go on tour, give interviews, do photo shoots ... I'm so used to it. But seeing a child light up from the inside when we pass him useful insights, I did not know what it was. To be able to contribute to the good of the people who circulate around me, it is my objective. "
Kindness
Returning to Quebec last fall after fifteen years of absence, Lara Fabian did not take long to find her bearings.
"Life in Quebec is very natural for me”, says the one who stayed there from 19 to 34 years of age. “It's my soul root. I had to be born here in another life. It's impossible to be so comfortable somewhere and understand the mindset without being born. It is special."
The singer-songwriter says she loves Quebecers' benevolence. "It's in your genes. And in all humility, I even allow myself to say "in our genes". We are kind. We do not like to hurt someone. We do not like to criticize for nothing. Here, cynicism is not welcome. Sarcasm no more. The controversy even less. Why ? Because it's a loss of energy."
-------------------------------------------------
Earlier in the week Lara appeared for an hour on radio Canada, which can be heard at (https://ici.radio-canada.ca/premiere/emissions/les-grands-entretiens/episodes/405076/audio-fil-du-mardi-17-avril-2018). In a wide-ranging interview Lara repeated many of her common themes (her name, family, languages, her love for Quebec, etc.), with extracts from a few of her popular recordings (including ‘Je me souviens’). A summary of this interview is at (https://ici.radio-canada.ca/premiere/emissions/les-grands-entretiens/segments/entrevue/68161/chanteuse-lara-fabian-chanson-carriere-entrevue-monique-giroux-enseignements); translated here:

Lara Fabian Wants to Transmit Her Passion and to teach her profession to the Young.
Telling her experience to young artists and passing on what she has learned over time is what motivated Lara Fabian to return to Quebec in 2017. "When I was called for this role of coach at La voix, [...] that really answered what I wanted," says the 48-year-old singer-songwriter into the microphone of Monique Giroux, she who has sold 12 million albums during her career.
Far from wanting to stop, as evidenced by her show Camouflage, which has been on tour for several months in Europe and the United States, Lara Fabian is still thinking about her post-career.
"I dream of transforming the rest of my life," she says. When it's time to settle down for good, the Belgian-Canadian singer-songwriter would like to teach, with the help of master classes, the basics of her job to young people who want to make a career in the world. song. She would also like to help them avoid some pitfalls. "If I can save some young artists some mileage [...], that would be my greatest joy."
“I think having a place where we can prepare the kids to read a contract, to choose the right person, not to hide behind an image, to do the non-compromise of being oneself, to have the courage to be imperfect then to be vulnerable when it's time to show it [...], it can be learned.” – Lara Fabian
A karaoke experience in Montreal
Lara Fabian also briefly recalled her experience of karaoke in a bar in the metropolis last February, "a moment of complete euphoria," she says.
Arriving unexpectedly at the Karaoke Date, located in the Gay Village, the international star completely charmed all those who were there by singing one of her biggest hits, ‘Je t’aime". It was so much fun! "
------------------------------------------
Lara’s international career was mentioned (e.g., the show at the Beacon Theater, the Barbra Streisand interaction, singing for Gorbachev’s 80th birthday) but Lara did not mention Camouflage or her concerts, in what was a very conversational (rather than promotional) tone. It is clear Quebec is rediscovering how verbal Lara can be…
You may have noticed that the articles are now consistent in referring to Lara as having sold 12 million discs, rather than the 20 million that has been referred to elsewhere. They presumably arrive at that number by counting the number of sales recorded in ‘Charts in France’ (which come to about that tally). But they would appear to under-count record sales in other countries. One would think that the 20 million value was arrived at by Warner France when they were distributing her last French album, but perhaps total record sales is a slippery statistic.
Then of course there was the second quarter finals of La Voix. Here Lara’s three team members were Elodie, Felix and Kelly. This was very close: the final voting was (in percentage, with both Lara and the audience voting separately):
Felix: 38% from Lara; 40% from the audience; total 78%
Kelly: 32% from Lara; 44% from the audience; total 76%
Elodie: 30% from Lara; 16% from the audience: total 46%
So Felix won, on the basis of Lara’s vote, with the audience voting for Kelly.
Compare this to last week’s total:
Miriam: 35% from Lara; 54% from the audience; total 89%
Redgee: 33% from Lara; 32% from the audience; total 65%
Jean-Alexandre: 32% from Lara; 14% from the audience; 46% total
where Miriam’s over-the-top performance captivated everyone. By the way, Jean-Alexandre’s performance in the quarter finals can be seen on youtube at:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDmJsvigUN0&index=3&list=PLwnP_A-PCLIKaolHOAzYhlw-lQ1fcOLxw
while Redgee’s performance is at:

An article about Felix having won “because of Lara" can be found at www.journaldemontreal.com/2018/04/22/felix-passe-en-demi-finale-de-la-voix-grace-a-sa-coach-lara-fabian
After indicating the numbers, the article concludes by saying
“The Belgian singer was obviously seduced by his cover of the song Angel from Sarah McLachlan's. This time, it is the coach who has the upper hand on the public!”
We know Lara does like the song ‘Angel’…
So now it’s on to the semifinals, with Miriam and Felix from Lara’s team.
Another item from the “Clin d’oeil” experience of last week, Lara talking about her favorite things in Montreal (e.g., Westmount, an affluent suburb), singers (including Laurence Jalbert and Isabelle Boulet) , etc. The video is available at:
www.facebook.com/magazineClindoeil/videos/743540815844255/
As people noted, Lara’s Quebec accent was in full display.
In other news, Lara was at the 25th (Silver) Anniversary of the ‘Daffodil Ball’ (an evening for the benefit of the Canadian Cancer Society, “the most successful annual cancer-related fundraising gala in Canada”). It was attended by hundreds of guests and raised two million dollars. Lara and many of the other female guests were dressed in silver for the occasion. There are many pictures available, including a few with Lara, at:
www.moetreal.com/photos-the-25th-silver-anniversary-of-the-daffodil-ball/
A number of other photos of Lara from Will Del'Mr on “LFIAG Select” can be found at:
www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1441588249286262&set=pcb.857776561075874&type=3&theater&ifg=1
(Lara’s shown there with her Real Estate agent, the dark haired man with the bow tie).
A very cute video of Lara dancing there to the songs ‘Dancing Queen’ and ‘Staying Alive’ can be seen at:
www.facebook.com/martin.rouleau.9/videos/1887160554651623/
Given that the three concerts in Quebec are officially not part of the Camouflage tour, it looks now that there will be a total of 27 concerts that were scheduled, not the 36 or 40 that had initially been discussed. Missing in particular were any concerts in Asia (China, Vietnam, etc.) that Lara had once mentioned. Apparently there were no promoters there willing to spend for Lara to appear. One wonders what the case will be for the next French album. Most likely there will be a tour of France and Belgium, although now that Lara has moved to Quebec, the mention of her in the French/Belgian press has seemed to decrease substantially. She will probably need to take action to boost it back up for the next tour there to be successful, one of the consequences of living in Quebec.
But no problems of that nature in Quebec – Lara’s two Montreal concerts are already sold out, as indicated on her FB page, www.facebook.com/events/2013050455391520/
(there still seem to be tickets for the show in Quebec).

Next week is the semi-finals of La Voix, and Lara will once again need to be in Montreal. Undoubtedly the very place she most wants to be.

A number of other photos of Lara from Will Del'Mr on “LFIAG Select” can be found at:

(Lara’s shown there with her Real Estate agent, the dark haired man with the bow tie).
A very cute video of Lara dancing there to the songs ‘Dancing Queen’ and ‘Staying Alive’ can be seen at:
