Given the pause in Lara's Camouflage ‘world tour’, a variety of Quebec-related events for her vie for the top story of this past week.
We’ll start with the least-expected: Lara’s appearance in the May edition (and on the cover) of the Canadian magazine “Clin d’oeil”. It is actually the third time she’s been profiled in this publication. It comes with several parts, the first being a long interview. When Lara Fabian responds on the phone, some notes from the piano resonate behind her. “Sorry, it is my Lou who practices” - the singer launches quite naturally. Interview with the one who marvelously juggles with her role as coach on La Voix, her world tour with Camouflage, the creation of a new French album and her family life.

You recently released your thirteenth album, and fourth English work, ‘Camouflage’. What calls out to you in the language of Shakespeare?
LF: Probably its musicality, its poetic side. I like to be able to approach concepts in a more succinct way. It’s also a language which I have spoken since I was quite small. The first song that my father taught me, it is ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’, from John Denver. That said, I work now on a new album in French! I would love to talk about beauty, both that which strikes us and that which we forget, of love of course, and also of the migrant in each one of us.
You live officially in Quebec since last October. How are you living out this return?
LF: Like a gift. It is truly what I have desired to live for a long time. When I have had the opportunity to be coach on La Voix, I haven’t hesitated. To transmit my knowledge, to help, it is my objective in life. I must even say that this return is one of the happiest things which has come to me in many years.
It is moreover more significant for you when one knows that you left Quebec after a break with the writer-composer Rick Allison, in 2003. On the broadcast “La vraie nature" (TVA), you have moreover come back with emotion on your relation with your old lover and collaborator, and we even could see him singing to you “Je t’aime” on video. What did that awaken in you?
LF: For me, it was already resolved. It was a very beautiful history in its fullness, but which knew a very abrupt end followed by some 13 years of silence. I have had time to transform this very villainous rupture into something constructive. I didn’t return to Quebec to heal. I arrived rather with an open heart and spirit of peace. When I learned that Rick recorded the song "Je t’aime”, I saw someone who made honorable amends. We had of course spoken in the meantime, but to make this gesture before the eye of the public… It was like he was telling me how important I had been to him, how he had loved me.
You often say that Quebec has made you reborn. What attracts you so much here?
LF: It is difficult for me to speak about it without seeming to exaggerate. I love the people here, truly. It’s them who have taken me into the world in such a touching way. We live two births: one that we don’t choose, and one that we choose. For me, this last has been Quebec. At 20 years old, I was accepted like a Quebec artist. I’ve lived all my first times here: my first great success, my first award, my first theater, my first gold record…I was chosen by the public. Some years later, at 47 years old, I feel again the same welcome. Quebec extended to me her hand.
A little like you have done at this moment with the candidates of La Voix 6. Is it that you had a given desire to participate on the show?
LF: Absolutely. For me, it is primordial to give to the next. Moreover, it is contained in the DNA of Quebec. La Voix isn’t such a success by chance. It lifts one, extends the hand and says: “Go ahead. You are capable!” making it an integral part of the codes of this culture.
As a coach, you welcome, you encourage, but you are also in the emotion. How do you perceive your role?
LF: I think that there’s no separation between what people perceive of me and what I am. It is magical to be oneself. And it isn’t easy in our milieu, because one tries to project a magnified image. One has only a few minutes, a short performance…We never appear as bad as when we try to appear good! That is my mantra. The chair of La Voix, for me, it is a little like being in my living room and watching a magnificent program on music.
During a blind audition, you moreover moved all of Quebec by bursting into tears when the voice of one of your future protégés reminded you of that of your father. Did you expect to have this type of reaction?
LF: My God, no! But I’m not afraid of showing my vulnerability. When Felix arrived, I did not wonder why that was so able to move me, or why it recalled for me my father. It blew me over. If I had been at home, I would have reacted in the same manner. The only difference, is that I have a camera pointed at my face.
Is it that your daughter, born in 2007 of your union with Gerard Pullicino, has some musical ambitions?
LF: She has some musical loves, but not ambition in that sense. Loulou, she is a multi-colored child who loves many things: to paint, to cook, to dance, to follow theater studies…But she is a small child of 10 years old. I try to not have any expectations. I have rather constructed a world in which all is possible. She will finally choose that which permits her to be herself. I want to guide her, without pressuring her.
How would you describe yourself as a mother?
LF: I am very, very, very loving. I think that my Italian origins have a lot to do with it. I am ultra-present and disciplinary. I know the importance of “no” and there is an “I love you” behind each one of them. I don’t hesitate to be a little rigid, because I know that in the limits that I lay down, the frames that I erect, there is the guarantee of a social space in which Lou will find some codes, some values and the duty to have respect towards others.
Through all your professional and personal obligations, how do you keep your equilibrium?
LF: I do like all the women of the planet, and I sometimes lose my head! (laughs). In fact, not only like all the women: like all the men also! I think that we are today relatively equal in the face of responsibilities which accompany a dense and complete life. I get huge support from my husband Gabriel (Di Giorgio, an Italian magician). It is perhaps the most important asset of our family life. He permits me to be calm when I leave on tour. I know that Loulou is happy when she is with him, that it goes well. It is in this confidence that I find my equilibrium.
Are there things that help you daily?
LF: If it is too much, if I have need of help, I don’t hesitate to say it to Gabriel and Lou. I try also to reserve for my self some moments alone, to do yoga, to keep my body and mind healthy. I also want to plan some days off to do nothing, to cook for my family or to pass some quality with my loved ones.
You also like to let out your crazy! We saw you sing your hit, “Je t’aime”, in a famous bar in Montreal last February…Can you tell us about your evening?
LF: I laughed so much! I was with a very good friend of mine. Once per year, we go to a good restaurant, then go into a karaoke. I didn’t want to get up on stage, but he finally convinced me. I sang “Je t’aime”, and I also left quickly. When I saw 200 cell phones raise up, I knew that I would find myself on social networks. It is not grave: it is even amusing to see that someone in my profession has equally a life, that she can sometimes let go!
Exactly, what is your relationship with social networks?
LF: It is relatively new for me! I love a lot the idea that there is something that allows no distance between the public and me. But I always remain in respect and propriety. As an artist, I find it important to preserve certain limits. There is a big difference between sharing and laying everything out. In Quebec, the people are very respectful of this reality. They understand that I want my private life to remain private.
After all these years of career, how do you keep your passion for the profession?
LF: I love it! Passionately. I have a real thrill of joy inside when I sing. It lives in me, it nourishes me. And the day when that will no longer be the case, I will do something else. Transmission is the ultimate goal for me. I would love to open a school of song, in particular, to equip the artists. You have to know how to surround yourself to be an actor of this trade, and not to suffer in it.
What are you dreams?
LF: I have so many! I want to write this musical comedy that I have in my head for so many years, to help Lou to create her own universe…I would very much love to accompany other artists in the pursuit of their ambitions. But my greatest dream, it is of continuing to exercise my profession to be able to give back what I’ve received. It is truly my credo.

On Sunday were the quarter-finals of La Voix. The competition among Lara’s team featured individual performances by Jean-Alexandre, Miriam, and Redgree. Miriam was the winner. While she is a captivating figure, this seems as if it is yet another example of style over voice (Jean-Alexandre was, IMHO, the best singer among Lara's group). Note that while the videos of several of these performances are listed on TVA’s site, they don’t appear to be active (at least not for people outside the country). Lara’s other three team members, Kelly, Felix and Elodie, seem as if they will have their own competition next week.

So, despite the inclusion of ‘Chameleon’ in the promo video, this will not be part of the Camouflage tour. That gets around the difficulty of presenting an English language album in concerts in Quebec (although it is being presented in France and Belgium, not exactly hotbeds of anglophile sentiment). Could ‘new’ mean Lara intends to have these shows introduce her new French album, also (still) predicted for the fall? If so, and if the album is not yet out, it would be a change, since she never previews an album in concert before it is officially released. It is not impossible that some songs from ‘Camouflage’ might still appear in the setlist, as well as the standard ‘hits’, and it may well include songs written in Quebec those many years ago, that were hits at the time but are rarely sung nowadays (e.g., “Tu t’en vas”).
The New York show at the Beacon Theater was mentioned in the promo above, and Marco Duplessis on the LFIAG-Select FB site provided a link (https://www.billboard.com/biz/current-boxscore) that shows that Lara had the 54th highest grossing concert in the first part of this year; it was the New York Beacon Theater concert in which she earned $321,000.

On Sunday were the quarter-finals of La Voix. The competition among Lara’s team featured individual performances by Jean-Alexandre, Miriam, and Redgree. Miriam was the winner. While she is a captivating figure, this seems as if it is yet another example of style over voice (Jean-Alexandre was, IMHO, the best singer among Lara's group). Note that while the videos of several of these performances are listed on TVA’s site, they don’t appear to be active (at least not for people outside the country). Lara’s other three team members, Kelly, Felix and Elodie, seem as if they will have their own competition next week.
The Lara Fabian Greece site reported that Lara was wearing a Marie Saint Pierre Fabiane dress on La Voix, as they show at

So, despite the inclusion of ‘Chameleon’ in the promo video, this will not be part of the Camouflage tour. That gets around the difficulty of presenting an English language album in concerts in Quebec (although it is being presented in France and Belgium, not exactly hotbeds of anglophile sentiment). Could ‘new’ mean Lara intends to have these shows introduce her new French album, also (still) predicted for the fall? If so, and if the album is not yet out, it would be a change, since she never previews an album in concert before it is officially released. It is not impossible that some songs from ‘Camouflage’ might still appear in the setlist, as well as the standard ‘hits’, and it may well include songs written in Quebec those many years ago, that were hits at the time but are rarely sung nowadays (e.g., “Tu t’en vas”).
The New York show at the Beacon Theater was mentioned in the promo above, and Marco Duplessis on the LFIAG-Select FB site provided a link (https://www.billboard.com/biz/current-boxscore) that shows that Lara had the 54th highest grossing concert in the first part of this year; it was the New York Beacon Theater concert in which she earned $321,000.

On a personal note, you may have noticed that this site just passed 5000 ‘likes’ and ‘followers’. Given that 4000 was passed in mid-November, 2017, this last one-thousand came in just six months, a speed which undoubtedly is due to Lara’s increasing (English-language) popularity with her English album, world tour, and renewed visibility in North America. We thank everyone who reads these Updates, regardless of whether one chooses to ‘like’ this page or not; as Lara often says about her ‘work’, it wouldn’t exist without you!

Lara’s activities next week should be broadly similar to this past one, with the semi-finals of La Voix. After that, in the finals, Lara’s two surviving candidates will compete against those from the other judges, with the audience getting to decide. Given recent experience, it wouldn’t be surprising if there were yet other Quebec experiences to be announced, as Lara continues to grow into this ‘rebirth’.
