Lara Fabian is undoubtedly one of the best voices in the world. A one-of-a-kind lyricist, composer and singer, Fabian has been around for more than two decades with a unique way of crafting sounds that end up being worldwide sensations.
Lara is now back with Camouflage, an album that she calls more pop and "absolutely fun”, without losing the message she always wants to deliver in each of the songs she writes.
Proud of her art and the moment she lives in here and now, before the first show of her Camouflage World Tour in Miami, to which of course we will go, Lara Fabian sat down to talk with us about her new music, her show, and what's coming for her.
It's an interview that we absolutely adore, you can feel Lara’s love for her art in every word, her passion, it’s a joy to talk with her, and we know for sure nobody will want to miss it.
MG: You are a brilliant composer not only in English but also in French, is it easier for you in a particular one?
LF: Thank you! I was born in Belgium and am an adopted Canadian with a Flemish father and a Sicilian mother. My daily life is full of colors of different cultures and languages, from my early upbringing on. When I write a song I do not deliberately think of choosing this or that language. The music defines the language almost naturally, some songs "work" only in a specific language. "I Will Love Again" is definitely a song in English and probably would not have had the same success in French. On the other hand, "Je t'aime" is an absolutely French song, not only for its lyrics, but for its melody. Having said that, some songs work very well in multiple languages too. But at the end of the day it is the music, and the musicality of a song that defines the language of the lyrics.
MG: Why the name 'Camouflage'?
LF: Camouflage is both the title of the album and also a song on the album. It speaks of our need to belong, to connect with society. And at the same time, it's about our fears when standing out, about being "different" and hence being rejected as the “other”. That's why we always try to hide who we really are, by blending into our environment, our society, and sometimes we erase our own colors. At the same time, looking at it from a positive angle, Camouflage is also our strength, our ability to adapt to different colors and establish a connection with our surroundings by becoming part of something that is bigger than ourselves.
MG: There is a song title that caught my attention 'Choose what you love the most (let it kill you)'. What was the inspiration behind that song?
LF: I do not like to explain in detail the history of the songs. I think the lyrics should speak for themselves; I will only say that this song talks about the choices we make in life, sometimes knowing that they will bring us difficulties or cause us pain, but we still go ahead with them. And that is precisely part of life and being alive. "Choose What You Love Most" is one of the tracks on this album in which my fans will probably recognize the connection with previous works, in terms of melodic structure, as well as the dramatic aspect of the lyrics.
MG: All artists are constantly looking for more, for new melodies and lyrics to express themselves, what motivates you as an artist? Do you think there is something you still want to try in music?
LF: I have been writing, composing and singing for more than two decades now, and I have no intention of stopping. Music is part of who I am. By recently joining the Canadian version of the television show 'The Voice' as a judge, I have also realized how I love to transmit my experience and knowledge about music to the next generation. I evolve constantly, as a woman and as an artist and that is reflected in my music. "Camouflage" is my first electro-pop album which combines electronic sounds with organic orchestrations and, of course, my voice, which also evolves as I age. There will always be more albums, more stories to tell and more songs to write, as long as there is an audience ready to listen to my music.
MG: What does Camouflage mean to you? What do you want to portray to your audience?
LF: Camouflage is above all a pop album. It was fun to write it, compose it and record it. So I can not wait to share its music on stage in the "Camouflage World Tour" and have fun with my audiences. My wish is that for the duration of two hours or so, we leave our worries and problems behind, and establish a connection with the music, the songs of Camouflage and the re-arranged versions of my other songs. I do what I do to connect with people, and my music and my voice are my instruments, I do not carry any other messages but love and respect.
MG: We will be there on the first night of the Camouflage US Tour in Miami. What can we expect?
LF: It's going to be a show very similar to what you hear on this album. Very rich in sounds. We have a great band on stage with fantastic artists and musicians. We’ll also have updated and re-arranged live versions of songs from my previous albums. I think everyone in the audience will find their "favorite song" during the concert, between the new ones, and the older ones. I believe this is going to be one of the most fun shows I have ever done, and I am really looking forward to this tour!

Another wonderful interview (which, although Lara speaks Spanish, may well have been given in English, then translated for the sake of the publication). It’s an interesting choice to give an interview to a Spanish language publication in Florida; one wonders how many Spanish speaking fans Lara and her Team thinks she has? [‘Quedate’ was a bit hit, and a number of the Spanish songs on the European version of her first English album were truly wonderful – but that was 17 years ago]. The interviewer is obvioiusly a big fan, and may well have initiated this article.
Last week there was the promotional photo of Lara on a taxicab in NYC; this week there is a picture of Lara on a shopping mall in Miami. Here’s a video of it (from the Lara Fabian US TOUR 2018 site):

Concerning the US tour, there’s obviously still a LOT to do, if Lara wants to have a reasonable showing at her five U.S. venues. Currently, two to three weeks before most of these concerts, the ticket availability shows that more than 80% of the seats in New York have been sold; about 50% in Los Angeles; about 33% in Chicago; and around 25% in Miami and Washington D.C. Unfortunately for Lara, Miami is first up – how discouraging it will be for her if there is not substantial improvement between now and then. But we reap what we sow, and Lara (and her Team) have not sowed many seeds in the U.S. up to this point in time; if they do not then have a bountiful crop, they should not be surprised.
Meanwhile, tickets are now available for a new date, the concert in Athens on May 19th,

This is the first new concert date to be added in awhile, and one hopes it is the start of more such announcements. In responding to comments about upcoming tour locations, Lara’s Team repeatedly answered that there will be something in Montreal, and it will be announced soon. Perhaps they’ve become convinced that with all the publicity she’s been getting there, even a primarily English concert will be o.k. (and one presumes she would talk to the audience in French). They’ve also indicated that, as promised, there will be a concert in Minsk, and that too will be announced soon. As for Brazil, they said they’re working on it, and it will happen, sooner or later. Since this was one of the places for which the English album was to be a ‘linguistic passport’, one hopes it is ‘sooner’ (i.e., for this current album).
Meanwhile, preparations for the tour are continuing. The Lara Fabian & Emmanuel Moire: LE duo site shared Moh Denebi's post with pictures from Sweden concerning the band's preparation of the "CAMOUFLAGE WORLD TOUR 2018",

As noted previously, the tour is now scheduled to go through September. That raised the question of whether a new French album in the autumn was still being planned. In response to complaints about Lara’s absence from France and Belgium, her Team repeated that time frame for the new French album; we’ll see how realistic it turns out to be.

At some point, Lara is going to have to start rehearsing for the new tour, and one supposes it will be ‘sooner rather than later’
– probably even this coming week, if the band comes over from Sweden. We’ll also see whether the U.S. tour promotion shifts into ‘high gear’ (and what ‘high gear’ means in this context). If a concerted effort is lacking or unsuccessful, Lara faces the possibility of an embarrassingly low turnout at some of her upcoming U.S. concert venues. Hopefully, in the next few weeks, the situation will change.
