Past, present and future were on display in another light week for Lara...
Here in mid-summer Lara took a break, as she put it, for “a few days of rest with the family…” – and provided an accompanying picture, at:
www.facebook.com/larafabianofficial/photos/a.215378125170359.50343.201065806601591/1191150394259789/?type=3
[This certainly qualifies as one of the interesting photos of the week!].
The ‘time-off’ gave Lara an opportunity to interact directly with her fans (relieving ‘Lara’s team’ of that responsibility). Hence, in the continuing thread, Lara added, “Is everybody doing ok ? I wish everyone a wonderful summer, full of joy, and peace of mind.. wherever you are ! Kisses
She then responded to a number of other questions/comments. Among her replies:
** In response to a question about Ivete Sangalo, the Brazilian singer, Lara responded, “Yes I know Ivete Sangalo , great artist!”
**Similarly, to a fan who indicated Lara and Toni Braxton were her two divas, Lara said, “Love Toni Braxton!”
**Some people mentioned they were looking forward to seeing her in Montreal on August 12th, to which Lara replied, “Yes” and “And me also”.
**And to a similar fan comment with respect to her December 18th appearance in Strasbourg, she responded “It will be the last concert of 2016!”
**She greeted a number of Greek fans who were looking forward to her September concert there… as well as Turkish fans for the concerts in August.
**And she returned declarations of love from fans, with the same sentiment.
The Lara Fabian Connecting People had another picture of Lara on vacation, available at:

Concerning the future, Lara added another concert in eastern Europe, in Chisinau, Moldova on October 19th. It falls in between the concerts in Ukraine (on the 18th) and Lithuania (on the 21st). It wouldn’t be surprising to find additional concerts in this geographic area added on neighboring dates. And as the ‘LFIAG Select’ site pointed out, the concert in Vilnius, Lithuania seats 12,500 people – let’s hope they have a good promotion department!
Concerning the past: Lara’s team provided a link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HR3YYUhq1A) to a video of her singing “Love by Grace” from the TV documentary “From Lara with Love” [or at least I think Lara’s team did – after the ‘disappearance’ of several other video links from my FB version of the official page last week, I can no longer be so sure ]. The program aired in the U.S. on PBS, December 17th, 2000, and an extended version was shown in Europe in the same time frame. This professionally recorded show is one of several high quality concerts that were never made into DVDs by Lara’s record companies and which now live primarily on the web. [And ‘live’ it does – one may note that this particular video has more than 2,300,000 views].
The one hour version of the show broadcast in the U.S. can be seen at
www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNIDSpgUj2Y
The longer – by some 24 minutes - European broadcast is less accessible; a version with Spanish subtitles can be seen at:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=AySSzS5F0f4
The additional songs that the latter broadcast includes are available individually (without Spanish subtitles for the songs themselves):
3: ‘Til I get over you: www.youtube.com/watch?v=tv5yB1wmei0
7: Giving Up On You: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AWlslsunxw
8: Part Of Me: www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1mtIfWiEOk
9: To love again: www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcxJnCUtmlI
12: White Christmas: www.youtube.com/watch?v=SywyS1CRiTM
15: Otro amor vendra: www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPoF5jll6_c
As many in this audience know, the video of this show has a curious, indeed sad history. Sony/Columbia filmed it in Montreal, in support of Lara’s first English album. It was made available as a VHS cassette to PBS subscribers in the U.S. but never as a DVD release, despite Sony having listed it in their catalog for two years running [and this while Lara was still officially part of their roster of singers]. So we don’t have an official high quality version of it, although DVDs are available from private sellers on the web.
Other professionally recorded concerts not officially made into DVDs include (and there well may be more):
**The Molson Center concert recorded for TV in Montreal
www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVpSzpfKrII
**Entre vous et moi [the concert for Lebanon]:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_dR6WyCNNU
**Le Secret Showcase, in Théâtre de Paris:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5dK0h7OAy0
The latter two at least occurred at a time of high quality internet recording, so DVDs can readily be made of them. The first two feature some of Lara’s best singing ever professionally recorded. All of these in high quality would still appear to have commercial appeal to Lara's world-wide audience.
CAVEAT: The following contains pure speculation, since we don't know the details of Lara's business arrangements...
Since ‘From Lara with Love’ was made for the first English album from Sony, Lara was not allowed to use any of her original French songs, which were not licensed to that record company. In retrospect that provided her the time to sing Spanish and Italian compositions along with the English album’s titles, and an occasional non-original French song – a mix that we are lucky to have this many years later. Nevertheless it illustrated the problems when one has more than one record company. And one can think that those were less enlightened times, and none of that could happen again, but…couldn’t it? We’ve been told that her new English album is not the property of Warner France. Were Lara to do a concert including both those new songs and cuts from ‘Ma vie dans la tienne’, would she not run into the same problem of mixed ownership for any video recording? We don’t know under whose province the new album will be – ideally it would be a Warner affiliate label, but if not, let’s hope that the record companies would realize that maximizing sales is a win for everybody concerned.
Alternatively, Lara may have learned her lesson and not signed over the “rights in the recording” to her record companies, as she did with Sony. When she bought them back, it allowed her to mix the English and French songs on the same album, as Universal did with her 'Greatest Hits' collection (e.g., www.amazon.com/Lara-Fabian-Greatest-Hits-Set/dp/B004Y8UPYK). It's conceivable that Lara might have a 'distribution' contract for the English album, maintaining her control. A discussion of the different types of contracts employed in the music industry can be found at (http://www.imusiciandigital.com/en/blog/the-most-important-contracts-in-the-music-industry/).
Speaking of her first English album, it continues to appear on iTunes charts all over the world, currently being #52 in Uzbekistan (!). When the claim is made that Lara has sold 32 million discs, one wonders how many are related to this album and its associated singles, all of whose numbers are poorly recorded by Charts in France.
And as for the latest French album: A promotion Lara did for ‘Ma vie dans la tienne’ is being replayed on BelRTL; a video promoting it can be seen at:
www.facebook.com/belrtl/videos/1250908874941194/
It can be heard Saturday from 1200-1300 local time on
www.rtl.be/belrtl/player/index.html
Shows like this help to keep the album alive, commercially, and it is still doing respectfully on the Belgian charts, at #40 (after 38 weeks!). Actually, it’s still on the French charts too, at least in physical CDs, at #160.
Interesting photos of the week (in addition to the vacation photos above):

Then finally, from Operation Fan Club Lara Fabian,

In 10 days Lara will be appearing at the Gay Pride festival in Montreal, a performance many are looking forward to. It will be interesting to see how the press there treat her; early indications (from the promoter, at least) are that it will be very favorable! This could be a nice forerunner for increased activity in that province, and the country as a whole in 2017, with both the French and English language albums.
