The news this week for Lara is short but sweet . She posted two pictures of Sweden on her FB site, with, as can be seen, the caption, “Stockholm…Starting the work on the new English album!!!”

Lara had actually announced that she was working on such an album during the radio interview “Vivacite en Concert” on rtbf in Belgium, in conjunction with the song “I Will Love Again”. This, as well as 10 other songs from the DVD ‘Un soir autour du monde’ (with additional commentary) can be heard at:
www.rtbf.be/vivacite/emissions/detail_vivacite-en-concert/accueil/article_le-vivacite-en-concert-consacre-a-lara-fabian-et-de-nombreux-bonus?id=9306944&programId=5816
While such an activity was rumored about when the concert cancellations were announced a few weeks ago, it is undoubtedly very good news that it was presented so officially. Many times in the past decade Lara would note in an offhand way during an interview that she was working on an English album, without anything subsequently being released. This now looks real. Lara indicated she has been writing songs, though we don’t know with whom this work will be done. Nicolas Navarro on the LFIAG site suggested it may be Bagge and Pier (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bagge_%26_Peer) who worked with her before, on the “A Wonderful Life” album [Bagge was a co-writer on “I Guess I Loved You"]. More information will probably become available as the work progresses.
This work would apparently be the reason for her postponing the concerts in Poland – a matter of ‘striking while the iron is hot’ - and probably the ones in July as well. And it would certainly be appropriate to have such a new record in hand when traveling around the world - particularly to the US and English speaking Canada. If that is to be in ‘early 2017’, it might explain Lara’s urgency. Can she really finish a record and have it ready in under a year? Without much production, EWIM appears to have been; we’ll have to see how much work goes into this one. Estimates about the time required can be found, for example, at (http://www.trustmeimascientist.com/2013/05/06/how-long-is-this-gonna-take-recording-an-album-in-the-21st-century/, and landfmusic.com/archives/long-record-album). Here are their main conclusions:
1) The writing process, for both music and lyrics, is probably the longest delay.
2) The minimum time for recording a full length album takes from 2 days to 2 weeks. With many complicated/overdubbed tracks, it can be longer. One producer says that 1 song/day is his preferred time for recording.
3) The time for mixing (8 hours/song) and mastering (4 hours/song) is thus about 12 hours/song.
4) To press the album, the time for CDs is about two weeks, for vinyl up to a month.
5) Additional time is required for the artwork, photos, packaging, etc. – and of course, promotion.
6) The end quote is: “Generally though, you’re looking at around 6-12 months from the moment you lay down your first track to its final release”.
The shorter end of that time range, particularly, would work if Lara is to present this album throughout the international portion of her tour in 2017. Lara posted the comment about being in Stockholm on May 30th. However, on June 1st she begins 8 days of concerts, starting in Geneva, then continuing in France and Belgium. One guesses that she felt cancelling these was not an option, especially considering how many were cancelled in France due to her hearing injury a few years ago. But after June 8th she will likely have several dedicated months to focus on the new album.
In addition, if the goal is to have the record available for English (and other non-French speaking) locales, one would assume (or hope) that it would actually be released in those countries. Given her past history, that would seem to be far from assured; it might just be available as an ‘import’. The radio interviewer had indicated that Lara had “two previous English records”, and Lara didn’t correct him, EWIM apparently ‘slipping through the cracks’. It is worthwhile to note that that record was never released in the US or Canada, or even made easily available there, despite its potential, and despite Lara’s subsequent tours of those countries. And we know that Sony never released “A Wonderful Life” there, either. Warner Records seems to be more concerned with exploiting her international potential than previous companies, so maybe this one will be.
The various fan sites carried this news and it was greeted with great enthusiasm throughout a wide range of countries/cultures. This is an indication of how ready fans are in various non-Francophile locations for songs they can more readily understand .
The other news of note this week was Lara’s interview on the Canadian show ‘Sucre Sale’ on TVA. A video of it is available at:

Lara rode around with Pat Belanger in his ‘Pat mobile’. The show was delightful, with much humor, and some pathos (Lara talking about her mother). It included Lara handing a barely-eaten roast beef sandwich (and a bottle of water) to a homeless person. Lara got to sing – or try to sing, she had some trouble remembering the words – some older songs, including Leila, as well as I Will Love Again, and from the new album ‘Ton desir’. She was also asked some questions as to which she liked better, ‘Belgian’ or Quebecois’, and when it came to men she said ‘Italian’. A nice picture of the two of them together can be seen at:

The show, with its old-time clips of Lara with dark hair in Quebec, is yet another attempt to reacquaint the Canadian public with its one-time star. If there are enough of these, maybe something will take hold.
Now in its 29th week after release, ‘Ma vie dans la tienne’ went up 9 places to #145 in France, while dropping to 27th in Belgium. [That brings up the question of whether the next English album will actually be released in France…]. ’Ton desir’ has still not appeared on the singles charts.
Interesting photo(s) of the week: from ‘Sucre Sale’ (in response to a comment from Gabriel, on the phone; we also got to hear Lou):

and, in a complete change of mood, from Lara Fabian Brazil

Lara will have 5 concerts in the next 8 days; hopefully there will be plenty of videos made available. We’ll also see how this setlist differs from the earlier portion of her tour. And maybe we’ll learn a little more about the English album recording. Exciting times!
