The highlight this past week was the broadcast of "Le jounal intime de Lara Fabian" on RTL TVI with host Thomas Van Hamme. The video itself can be seen at:

It was everything one could hope for, in presenting Lara as she really is, philosophical, humorous, sensitive, kind and full of life. It covered all the major aspects of her life, starting from her childhood (and present day) in Catania, Sicily, through her years as a young adult in Belgium, then on to Canada with Rick Allison, and back home, including remarks from her close friends (e.g., Maurane, Nathalie, Veronic Dicaire with that great ‘Je t’aime’ impersonation), and, especially Gabriel (who spoke on camera for one of the few times). Also to be noted are all the pictures of Lara from her childhood and as a young adult (from Lara’s and Nathalie’s personal collections, among others). As was to be expected, many of the topics covered are well known to us – Lara’s health, her appearance at Eurovision, her love of food and cooking, etc. She does discuss her mother’s issues on the show, and since they also have footage from her concert in Liege, which took place on 3/19, the filming was not finished before then. Beautifully photographed (including wonderful shots from Mt. Etna), with a compassionate host, it spent some time at the end covering the criticism of Lara (e.g., Les Guignols from 2000) that was rampant in the French press; Lara’s mature response now is that she can only be herself (as she says in the lyrics to ‘Non coupable’).
The show differed from other in-depth profiles of this nature that we’ve seen about Lara over the years in its concentration on her life in Sicily; we saw a bit of that in ‘Intime’ back in 2001 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3BGObofusY), but not in this depth. Previously we’ve seen shows that delved into her life in Montreal (and also in Belgium), and apparently they originally intended to film in Canada where Lara’s success began. But when the decision was made to create the video for “L’oubli”, and then to let Thomas Van Hamme interview the Sicilian side of the family, filming in Catania and neighboring regions became the obvious thing to do. Nevertheless, these various backgrounds fit into the motif, strongly developed here, of Lara being an ‘International Star’, which seems to be the persona she has now fully adopted.

After a forced rest in 2013, following an injury to the inner ear which could cause lifelong deafness Lara Fabian reinvents herself stronger than ever and has a hit with her new album 'Ma vie dans la tienne”. At the forum of Liege, one of the five dates of the Belgian wing of her tour, she opens up to us the backstage of her concert.
The young woman talks about her career of course, a gallery of moments, of joy too, like motherhood and family which so fulfill her. On the set, some personalities are invited to share their intimacy: Frederic Lopez, Vincent Niclo, Maurane or Virginie Hocq. We discover an endearing Lara, who engages directly. Her life for 20 years, is a little in ours also.

The responses on Lara’s website, of course, were all glowing, covering much of the same sentiments as expressed above. If one reads the comments on the RTL site, they were of a very similar nature (e.g., those following the ‘supplemental video’ whose link is provided above). And Thomas Van Hamme, on his FB site, also indicated how much he enjoyed it, which certainly showed, even to the point of Lara’s getting him to sing a bit of a Sicilian song (which itself starts about 34 minutes in, of the 48 minute show). This will certainly go down as one of the classic TV profiles of Lara.
This was broadcast during the pause Lara is taking from her touring, for the next few weeks; there were no additional videos to speak of that became available from her recent concerts in France. The schedule picks up again in Romania, April 20th, for the first of two concerts there.
In other news, ‘Thierry Palo’ on the MZ FB site noted that ‘Ton desir’ is in third place of ‘hit singles’ at www.facebook.com/sunhitmusic.caen/photos/a.1541056079489031.1073741828.1541029756158330/1661439557450682/?type=3&theater. And this is consistent with the news that it is, in fact, the third single, despite ‘L’oubli’ apparently filling the role as of two weeks ago. “L’oubli” is the best song on the album, but it’s a conversation-stopper, not exactly what one employs to sell a commercial product (one that Lara really does want to sell). There’s the suggestion that if it had ‘taken off’, it would have been the third single, but clearly the message and beat of ‘Ton desir’ is more appropriate, as the article said, for the warmer weather seasons. On the charts, the re-edition has proven to be a big success – in physical CDs, in France, ‘Ma vie dans la tienne’ has jumped up from 58th to 19th, and, including digital, from 77 to 22nd. It has not been as high as this on the French chart since the 4th week! One (possibly very strong) contributing factor is the DVD of her Prague concert, ‘Un soir autour du monde’, which accompanied the physical CD release – note that in digital sales (without the DVD), the album actually fell 42 places to 178th. Total sales are still listed as approximately 85,000 – however, for purposes of awards (gold record, platinum record, etc.), it is the amount distributed to stores, not that actually sold, which is counted, and presumably this is why the album is judged to be ‘platinum’ (more than 100,000 discs distributed). In Belgium, the CD jumped from 22nd to 9th place, as high as its been since the 7th week. [BTW, in a correction to a comment made in the last Update, the DVD ‘Un soir autour du monde’ actually does come in a NTSC version, when sent to countries for which that is the appropriate form (at least by FNAC)].
The suggestion has also been made that a ‘re-edition’ often releases as a single a song that didn’t appear previously, and so ‘Non coupable’ might ultimately be chosen as the 4th single. That would be a somewhat daring move on Lara’s part; we’ll see if it comes to pass.

With regard to Lara’s appearance last week with Patrick Sebastien, where the show replayed Lara’s take on his hit “Ah si tu pouvais fermer ta gueule”: it might be useful to clarify the nature of Lara’s ‘spoof’. Shown below is a translation of the original lyrics that he sang; also given, with ** signs, is what Lara actually sang (or close to it – she changed a few words, but in an inconsequential manner).

So Lara’s parody was really more about what she left out than what she changed. The original song was aimed primarily at the ‘talking heads’ of politicians, though Patrick Sebastien then included himself (as their presenter) in the indictment. Lara aimed it first at him, and then included herself as someone guilty of the same ‘sins’. Very clever!

We’ll see if Lara’s album continues to move up the charts, through a combination of the re-edition and the wonderful on-air publicity she’s been receiving. While we know there are other issues in her life (some of the publicity includes that for “L’oubli’ and her mother), this seems to be a good time for her Francophone career, arguably the best in over a decade.

So Lara’s parody was really more about what she left out than what she changed. The original song was aimed primarily at the ‘talking heads’ of politicians, though Patrick Sebastien then included himself (as their presenter) in the indictment. Lara aimed it first at him, and then included herself as someone guilty of the same ‘sins’. Very clever!

We’ll see if Lara’s album continues to move up the charts, through a combination of the re-edition and the wonderful on-air publicity she’s been receiving. While we know there are other issues in her life (some of the publicity includes that for “L’oubli’ and her mother), this seems to be a good time for her Francophone career, arguably the best in over a decade.
