Another week, another set of media appearances/interviews/reviews. Lara had a long appearance on "Le journal inattendu" with Marie Drucker, and their intelligent interview can be heard at:

In addition to the usual comments about her health and the new album, the broadcast dovetailed with news of the new climate accord in Paris; and of course there was the backdrop of Brussels having been on ‘lock-down’. So Lara was given the opportunity to comment on those things as well. Here are some of the main points;
**Lara doesn’t blame the government for the Belgian terrorist problem, although she does think the current state of tension is ‘creepy’. She understands that the president Charles Michel has had to act in a preventive manner. On the other hand, she still believes that Belgians are basically welcoming and their basic nature is not to be terrorists.
**She is all in favor of the new attempts to limit climate warming, although she hopes people will not just follow the letter of the law, but push past that (“They won’t just do things that are absolutely obligatory”). That if she were to be a ‘group of individuals’ she would be ‘Greenpeace’, and she specifically mentioned the Al Gore film “An Inconvenient Truth”. Of course, one of the ‘bonus’ songs on the special edition of her new CD, “C’est ma terre” is about the need to protect the planet.
**There was a segment about the fate of ‘singers of voice’ in modern day music [in France, at least], and the need to accommodate to current tastes. In Lara’s case, for contrast they played a bit of ‘Je t’aime’ and then a portion of the new song ‘Ma vie dans la tienne’, where Lara is much more restrained. Lara explained the difference as different times and different countries (Quebec vs. France) – but, actually, she’s matured emotionally in the last 20 years (one would hope so), and wouldn’t write and sing songs in that way now, regardless. However, she has to be true to herself (and can't become a hip hop singer!).
**The host knew of Lara’s interest in Astrology and so there was a long discussion about that. In fact, that topic, and other related ‘mystical’ ones, has not come up much associated with this album. It was a constant subject with ‘Le Secret’ whose theme was about much more esoteric things, and led to Lara being labeled as ‘far out’ in some people’s minds.
A nice component on this show, also one that differed from what went on with ‘Le Secret’, was that the audience got to hear various cuts from the album, not just the selected singles. With ‘Le Secret’, ‘Deux ils, deux elles’ dominated what people were hearing, and so the full scope of that magnificent album was never properly displayed.

You have a magnificent bond with your crowd. Every soul in your audience shares your feelings and it seems like you are unified as one. How does this happen and how does it make you feel?
LF: thank you very much for these kind words. This type of bond between an artist and the audience is why I am doing what I am doing. My music is in my instrument to connect with people; it is this connection that I am searching through my music, my lyrics, my voice and my very presence on the stage. If we managed to reach this connection, and I mean by “we”, me and the audience, then something magic happens. How does this happen? I do not know. There is no mathematical formula for this. This connection is very difficult to describe. But I can say that if I am doing this profession for now nearly 25 years, the reason is this feeling of being connected with people.
Your lyrics are very poetic. With their meanings they tend to mesmerize your listeners. When separated from their instruments your lyrics are like they were written by a poet. Where does poetry stand in your life?
LF: I am very much attracted and seduced by the attention given to the expression of feelings and emotions with the highest possible precision. Poetry has this power, through its metaphoric richness and the affluence of imagery. It is an amazing from of expression, that I am very much attracted to.
What moves you? What do you think feeds your creativity?
LF: What moves me is Love, in all its form. And contemplation, people. I am a very contemplative person, and love to connect with people. Watching people, discovering all the nuances, when you look attentively at someone. These are my sources of creativity, people.
How is your relationship with melancholia?
LF: This is not the best relationship I have, I must say, because I believe melancholia does not have a good effect on me. The term includes, to me, a form of regret. We don’t advance with melancholia, it keeps us behind. There is something negative in it. I rather prefer Nostalgia. It seems far more positive to me.
What is your secret behind piecing together music & soul?
LF: It is not really a secret. For me, it is simply being who I am. Without compromise and deformations, being intrinsically myself. Through my work, I try to transmit who I am in spirit, and in mind. Music is my vector to express who I am.
Did you ever think of gathering your lyrics separate from its music (instruments) and sharing them as a book of poem with your fans?
LF: No. What creates the “magic” of what we say in words in my songs, is also connected to the sound. Both are inseparable. You must know that, when I write my songs, I start usually with the music. And the lyrics come afterwards, on top of it, organically. I cannot dissociate these two. If I would separate the lyrics from the music, it would be as if an essential part of the body of what I wanted to express would be missing.
Istanbul is like a poem on its own. It is sometimes mind boggling, exhausting but nevertheless passionate. How is your relationship with Istanbul? Do you have another city that you’re passionate about?
LF: Istanbul is a fascinating city. I have been now several times here, but, unfortunately, did not have the time to really explore it the way I’d love to. The city I am most passionate about is Montreal, where I lived for many years. And Quebec in general. The sense of space, and the light of Montreal and Quebec are the reasons for this. The energy I feel everywhere when I am there. Although there are many places I have an emotional link to, my passionate relation to a place is definitely Quebec and Montreal.
How do you feel when you’re up on stage? Is it a place of freedom, refuge, serenity or the heart of a burning flame?
LF: I would answer “a bit of all of these”. It really depends on how I feel that very moment. Also of the place, the city, its energy and especially the energy that comes across from the audience. As an artist, I am very sensitive to that. And when I am on stage, there are no masks, no filters. Whether I want it or not, this is a moment of true expression of what and who I really am.

Lara Fabian prepares a musical comedy. In full promotion of her album ‘Ma vie dans la tienne’, released on November 6, Lara Fabian revealed several times, but mainly on the set of stage of the news program '13 hours' of France 2, she has talked about writing a musical comedy. The opportunity for us to make a flashback on the relationship that the singer has maintained throughout her career with the world of the musical comedy.
For it is not the first time that the artist rubs from near or far to this universe. After performing "La chanson de la petite fleur triste" in 1998, in the second version of the musical tale 'Emilie Jolie', she made a brief appearance in the American musical film De Lovely (2004), about the life of composer Cole Porter. The singer nevertheless has a number sung, alongside Kevin Kline who plays the composer. She is then presented to take over the role on stage created for the screen by Julie Andrews in Victor Victoria. Unfortunately the project will not be followed through.
Some time passes and one finds the singer, godmother of the AICOM (the International Academy of Musical Comedy), the director Pierre-Yves Duchesne, being her vocal coach at the time. She will give some masterclasses and will even participate in a show with students, '1939', played during two performances at the Theatre Gymnasium.
In 2010, the singer turns a musical feature film featuring the songs of her album for the market of Eastern countries, Mademoiselle Zhivago. It is announced as a blockbuster. The film finally came out on the sly on Youtube, truncated and reassembled by her concerns; a conflict with the film director Alan Badoev on the artistic direction of the film blocking its release for three years.
Again a few months ago, Emmanuel Moire evoked during an interview in the magazine Platinum the artist's participation in an abortive production of Serge Tapierman, The Three Musketeers ... (which does not seem to be the same production that has been announced for next September, produced by Roberto Ciurleo).
Since, Lara Fabian changed her team and is surrounded by David Gategno (remember David and Jonathan, "Est-ce que tu viens pour les vacances"? -it was him!) with whom she wrote all the songs from her new album. On last December 1st, she told Elise Lucet, on the stage of '13 hours' on France 2, that she is preparing with him a musical about a love story over several epochs that intermingle ...
It is not yet known in which phase of creation one finds the project. What is certain is that after this number of tentative attempts without anything happening, one of these days, we should see the name of Lara Fabian associated with a musical show. So wish her good luck!

After “Quand je ne chante pas” and “Ma vie dans la tienne”, two extracted clips, Lara Fabian released November 6th the album named from the titles which have been written by Lara with David Gategno and her friend, Elodie Hesme. If, after her wanderings of her last years, we find, it is true, the Lara we loved, it is clear that apart from the first single we loved, the first extract that is found fresh and fun to listen to (even if she has travelled some kilos in the clip), the rest of the album, if it is nice to listen, does not catch the ear neither by words nor by her melodies and does not propel the singer of the second half of years ... 10, 20 years passed. And neither the erotic title ('Ton desire') nor the interactive album art suffice to render the album current. A collector's edition CD + DVD contained two unreleased tracks written by the Russian Krutoy, two live tracks captured in Prague (this recital has also been diffused in cinema halls on the day of the release of the album), and subjects made during the recording of the album and the making'of the clip "Quand je ne chante pas."

You may remember the days when Platine was a first class production, one that would discuss Lara’s albums in depth, and have amazing interviews with her. She would tell them things she had told no one else (in France, at least), and they praised her for not avoiding questions and not asking to see the stories before they were printed. Well, those days are now long gone. Both in the case of this review, and also the one they did of ‘Le Secret’, one wonders if they even listened to the album (or read the lyrics) – certainly they didn’t listen to it twice. True, the album does not have many ‘big songs’ to “catch the ear”– like ‘Pure’ did – but then again, neither did ‘Nue’, though it too, like this one, had many well-crafted, personal and beautifully sung titles.
As to how the album is doing…in France it has fallen to 27th place (including both physical and digital editions), a drop of 9 spots from last week. There have been 35,000 copies sold. For comparison after five weeks, ‘Le Secret’ was #38, while Nue was at #12 (so ‘Ma vie dans la tienne’ is close to half-way in-between those two). However, the next week ‘Nue’ fell to 23 and went on a downward spiral for the following several months, before bouncing all the way back up to #3. It’s very possible this album will have staying power, and if one of several possible singles catches the public fancy – in combination with Lara’s spring tour – it may well rebound or at least stay at a respectable level. In Belgium, it is now #8.
As for that spring tour…Lara initially posted 6 concerts in France, three in Belgium, and one in Switzerland for the months of March and June. It was expected that she would then fill in the intervening months with additional performances, which she has started doing. But, surprisingly, the in-between concerts scheduled so far in April and May have been in Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, and added this past week, three in Poland. That brings the number to six in eastern Europe, the same number as in France. Of course, we haven’t seen the full schedule yet, but for a French language album, Lara is spending surprisingly little time in the francophile countries, and some fans writing in on her website have noticed that! Perhaps she’s assured of selling out in those other areas; in any event, unless there are more concerts in France, perhaps in the autumn, six concerts will not help the sale of her album all that much. It may be that she has reconfigured her expectations of what she can do in that country, perhaps with memories of the 'Le Secret' concert sales. This is something time will make clearer.

As for that spring tour…Lara initially posted 6 concerts in France, three in Belgium, and one in Switzerland for the months of March and June. It was expected that she would then fill in the intervening months with additional performances, which she has started doing. But, surprisingly, the in-between concerts scheduled so far in April and May have been in Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, and added this past week, three in Poland. That brings the number to six in eastern Europe, the same number as in France. Of course, we haven’t seen the full schedule yet, but for a French language album, Lara is spending surprisingly little time in the francophile countries, and some fans writing in on her website have noticed that! Perhaps she’s assured of selling out in those other areas; in any event, unless there are more concerts in France, perhaps in the autumn, six concerts will not help the sale of her album all that much. It may be that she has reconfigured her expectations of what she can do in that country, perhaps with memories of the 'Le Secret' concert sales. This is something time will make clearer.

In upcoming events, Wednesday December 16th at 22h40 on France 2, Lara will be the guest of honor of Frederick Lopez in "Folie passagère" ("Temporary Insanity"). A promo picture for it can be seen at:

As reported by several sites, on December 18th, Lara will be on the program “Murzilki LIVE" on AutoRadio 90.3 FM in Moscow,. Perhaps we’ll hear something about her upcoming plans for that country. It can be found at:

On the 19th her appearance on the program ‘C’est votre vie’, the special dedicated to Patrick Sebastien will air on France 2.
On the 31st, she will be on the show "Le 31 tout est permis", to be shown on New Year’s Eve (it was recorded on December 7th).
And, as reported by LaraFabian web, “Good news! The showcase that Lara Fabian has recently given in the studios of bel rtl will be circulated in full on that same frequency radio on 1 January 18 h30 to 20 h. The Information was given by Serge Jonckers today”.
Lara also posted on her website today a picture of herself with the singer/songwriter Milow in what she says will be a cross-interview for the stylish women’s magazine GAEL. She says it will “come soon”. The January issue appearing December 16th however has as their featured guests Mylene Farmer and Cate Blanchett, so perhaps ‘soon’ can’t be taken too literally. At some point, if not already, Lara will probably be heading to Italy for the holidays, and the only promotional events will be the pre-recorded ones. After that, we can expect a lull…so Lara’s sites will have to work harder than we’ve grown accustomed to!
