The leading news item this week was the release of information on Odacity’s new compendium of Lara’s songs, called ‘Selection’. Here is the information they put on their FB page (https://www.facebook.com/odacity/photos/pcb.937287046295659/937285972962433/?type=1&theater):
------------------------------------------------------------
From 'Tout' to 'Voce '…Hundreds of songs, encompassing a career of a quarter of a century. Performed in many languages, various versions, studio and live. This is Lara’s gift to us.
How can a record label make a selection among hundreds of tracks, knowing that only 17 songs will fit on a CD? We cannot talk about a ' best of '; who are we to decide which among the hundreds of titles, which are attached to so many personal memories, are ‘The Best '? Songs that have become a soundtrack to the lives of many of us... Songs that remind us of our love, relationships, passions, gratitude... but also our personal defeats, disappointments and pain... This can only be a ' Selection ', not a ' Best of...'
How does a record label make a selection among hundreds of tracks, knowing that only 17 songs will fit on a CD? This has to be a subjective choice, no doubt about it. And whatever we choose, the number of songs that will not make it onto the album will outnumber what we have chosen. Some you will miss your personal favorite on this album. That is unavoidable.
Some of our personal favorites here among the Odacity team are not included in the album either; the capacity of a CD is limited. And also, because the rights of many songs, including some major hits, are owned by other record companies, and could not be included in this compilation due to publishing rights and registration in specific territories.
Some of our favorites, such as ' Broken vow ', ' I will love again ', or ' I am A- wa ' have not been able to be included for this reason. Others, such as beautiful live performances, did not meet the technical quality level criteria in terms of recording, to allow them to be published on the album.
But beyond the technical and legal aspects, this remains a personal choice, a selection of Lara. It was important that the ultimate decision was the artist’s, as this is Lara’s 'SELECTION'. Some of you will be able to discover the recordings that you had not heard before, or re-discover them. And some, especially those choices that seem to be the most unexpected, may be able to provide you with a new path to enjoy Lara’s music, and feel her beautiful personality through her amazing voice . This is what ‘SELECTION’ is about; subjective and incomplete, but sincere and personal...

ODACITY
----------------------------------------------------------
On the first CD there are 17 songs. They are:
Je t’aime **
Al Gotur Beni (Radio edit)
Tango **
Tout **
Mademoiselle Hyde
Si tu m’aimes **
Immortelle **
Desperate Housewife
Tue es mon autre
Humana **
Angel
Papa Can You Hear Me
Calling You
Adagio (English) Live **
Caruso
Sto Male **
Voce **
The second CD has just five songs, apparently remixes. As of the time of this writing, they have yet to be revealed, but we imagine they include ‘Make Me Yours Tonight’ and perhaps another version of ‘Voce’, among a few others.
Given the statement above, there is no use arguing over what should or should not have been included, especially if Lara did have a hand in it (though why ‘Pas sans toi’ is not there is a mystery – again maybe some obscure publishing rights issue).
It is interesting to compare this list with the 17 songs included on the one disc from Warner Italy for their ‘ESSENTIAL’ album. [That list is included in the News Update for 2-10, as well as at www.facebook.com/164644456884508/photos/a.402716213077330.115352.164644456884508/1047887701893508/]. The songs that overlap are indicated with ** on the songlist above. Seeing the songs that are present, one can conclude that the album ‘Pure’ is available to both record companies, probably ‘Nue’, as well (and who would have thought ‘Tango’, wonderful song that it is, would have shown up on both lists?). On the other hand, songs from ‘Le Secret’ seems to be out-of-bounds for this selection.
In addition to the normal bureaucratic conflicts between companies and countries, Lara has herself to blame for all these restrictions, as she was not satisfied with any of her record companies (who were also admittedly less than stellar). [In contrast, Bob Dylan, being with Columbia throughout his career, seems to be able to include any song on his retrospectives]. Again, in this day and age, with Lara’s whole catalog available on services such as ‘Spotify’, what is not on collections such as this is still widely available. We will get a reading on the second, five-song CD shortly.
As to how Lara is actually doing in Italy, for the week ending 3-1, ESSENTIAL is in 49th place in Italy (http://www.fimi.it/classifiche/#{"s":1,"p":2} )
[while Bob Dylan is 47!]. Of course, there could have been pre-orders from fans in other countries impacting this first week; we’ll see what happens next week.
Lara Fabian Italy has a picture of the writer of ‘Voce’ holding a copy of the album:

‘Super Sanremo 2015’, including Lara’s songs, is currently 5th on iTunes Italy:

Meanwhile, there have been additional publicity efforts for Lara’s upcoming North American tour. A beautiful video advertisement for Lara’s concert in Montreal (in English!), which Lara posted on her FB site, is at:

There is a large photo advertisement of Lara for her concert in Richmond, Canada (in English ):

France Rocks has donated two tickets to Lara’s concert in Florida to be used as a raffle prize to raise funds for support of RACCF’s World War II Tribute project:

And there are promotional efforts for the continuation of the ‘World’ tour after that, e.g., in Estonia:

Apparently Lara is also not finished with Igor Krutoi concerts, as she will be in Minsk on 5/15 for another one (although if this is a birthday celebration, it would now be his 61st ). It is, in fact, entitled ‘Encore’:

By next week we should have learned about the remaining five songs on the second CD of Odacity’s SELECTION release, and we should get a better handle on the future sales pattern for Warner Italy’s ESSENTIAL ‘best of’ release. And Lara is now less than two weeks away from her North American concerts. ‘Jada Dimas’, who attended the concert in Israel, left the following comment: “There seemed to be some important technical problems, as Lara kept touching her left ear, and sometimes had to walk backstage in the midst of the song, to talk with technical staff.” Hopefully Lara’s actions were taken to ensure her safety, rather than as a result of a real disturbance. But it reminds us that giving concerts is not routine for her these days, regardless of how well she sounds. We should appreciate them the more for that.
