Lara recorded her contributions to the 30-year anniversary of ‘Top 50’ last Tuesday, and while the program will not be broadcast until sometime in October, several fans did take videos of her two songs. A nice version of ‘Une femme avec une femme’ is available at:

Lara was in fine voice for both songs. Of course, the first song Lara has sung several times in its Spanish version, ‘Mujer contra mujer’, (e.g., the second song, following ‘Hijo de la Luna’, at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMDfJ_HNalY).

It is a good chance for Lara to be heard by a mainstream audience, and if this performance was any indication, it will be an impressive showing (even if Lara is not mentioned at all in that article). It’s likely that the program’s broadcast will be coordinated with the album’s release.

2014 will end up much better than 2013 for Lara Fabian. Remember: in October of last year, the singer was admitted to the hospital for "a serious concern to the inner ear," she wrote on Facebook. Subsequently, in January, she announced in a poignant video that she was forced to cancel her tour, before giving more details on the very heavy treatment she was constrained to follow ... A very bad patch she henceforth sees the end! Besides the fact that her music news is very busy, between a duet with Turkish singer Mustafa Ceceli and two albums in preparation (one in English and one in French), her health problems appear behind her ...

Indeed, TeleStar.fr met the artist this Tuesday, Sept. 23 behind the scenes of the recording of the 30 years of Top 50, to be discovered at least in October on M6. On this occasion, she sought to reassure her fans, and confided to us: "It is much better!" And thankful for the surge of love she received at the announcement of her illness: "As an artist, you always feel the love from one’s fans as a great gift. But when you're in trouble, it's even more touching" she told us, moved. "So I have even more appreciation vis-à-vis the public for having supported me," she concluded, smiling.

The article once again refers to the two new albums for next spring. On the stage of the show "Les 30 ans du Top 50", Lara announced that her new album in French will be released next April. A few weeks ago, it was scheduled for March. This goes to remind us that an album is never really out until it’s out – Lara has had numerous albums delayed, often for extensive periods of time (the first English album being a particular case in point). Whether Lara’s greater control over the process due to her freedom from record companies will help expedite the process or not, time will tell…
The Lara Fabian Türkiye FB site reported that Lara’s upcoming ‘Best of’ album will be released soon, and it will contain the cut "Make Me Yours Tonight" (or its Turkish equivalent, "Al Götür Beni"), as well as a ‘Club Mix’ remix. One would have to conclude that it’s not really a ‘best of’ album, but a ‘topical’ album designed to support the current tour. That’s o.k., as there have been several other ‘best of’ releases for Lara over the years (despite her having treated the concept with disdain in many interviews, previously).
You may remember that Lara will appear a few different times in Russia in November (15th, 16th and 22nd), associated with parties celebrating Igor Krutoi’s 60th birthday (which, again, was really July 29th). Actually it contains a number of the official clips, but then others that were not the official release (e.g., the versions they show of ‘Un Cuore Malato’ and ‘Tout’), and others that it was not clear were ever released as ‘official’ video clips at all (e.g., Yelliel My Angel, Review My Kisses, and a number of others). Hard to know what they were thinking – perhaps just to sample Lara’s work (?). Similarly, they also list the words to Lara’s songs (http://www.chartsinfrance.net/Lara-Fabian/paroles.html,p1), but again not all of them are there (e.g., nothing from ‘Mme. Zhivago’ except ‘Je t’aime encore’ from the French release, or anything from ‘Le Secret’ at all). Hopefully their chart listings and sale numbers are compiled with more completeness.
Now we turn to the last installment of the ‘best of’ videos, those that were not part of Lara’s standard repertoire over the years, that had only a few videos, but which she tended to return to every now and then. The rules here were that there had to be at least three separate videos (e.g., the two well-done Spanish songs linked to earlier in this update had only two good videos, and some of the cover songs from ETI fall in the same category); that they be separated somewhat in time; they be wonderful singing performances; and there be good video quality. Nevertheless, selections had to be made, and the number was kept close to that of the ‘overlooked’ songs from the last update (and to the patience of the reader). By requiring that Lara has performed them on multiple, widely spaced occasions, we are choosing those that it would not be completely surprising for her to sing again.

‘Calling You’ a song from the movie ‘Baghdad Café’, is often associated with Celine Dion, but in fact, it has long been sung by Jeveeta Steele, with whom Lara is seen doing a duet, in the second of the videos above. ‘Comme ils disent’ is the song by Charles Aznavour discussing a homosexual lifestyle and feeling. It was groundbreaking at the time, and in some countries, would still be. The first version chosen above is a serious, powerful emotional presentation during the time of life when Lara often provided them. The second is from her show in Moscow, with an appropriate introduction - one wonders if she would give that now in Moscow, or even sing this song, at least so freely. The third is another wonderful, sensitive performance, complete with (minimal) stripping
that is referred to in the lyrics, from the ‘En Toute Intimite’ DVD. One can also find a version of high quality from her acoustic show (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUngIQnkpWI).
‘Et maintenant’ is the French language equivalent of the English song, “What Now, My Love?" Actually, the original version was the French one, written in 1961 by composer Gilbert Bécaud and lyricist Pierre Delanoë; it has somewhat darker lyrics than the English ones, which were written by Carl Sigman. Although Gilbert Bécaud's version topped the French charts in 1961, Elvis Presley’s English language rendition is the most famous, seem by a live audience of 1 billion people as part of his satellite show, "Aloha from Hawaii" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpjKlOM7KQ4). Among many others, Barbra Streisand also sang the English version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqFnDDz5YV8), further increasing the chance Lara would sing it.
The first video chosen above is a bonus selection from Lara’s ‘Live’ DVD. The second is an excellent duet with Florent Pagny. The third choice, perhaps the best sung on Lara’s part, is from a TV program.
‘Evidement’ was written and composed by Michel Berger and recorded by France Gall in 1987 on her album Babacar. It was written for her after the death of their friend Daniel Balavoine, killed in a helicopter accident while in Africa on a mission to help build wells. In 1986 Lara released her first single, "L'Aziza est en pleurs" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFPKvAA16MI, composed by Marc Lercs) in honor of Balavoine, so it was only natural that she should sing this song, too.

‘Grande, Grande, Grande’ , a1972 Italian song written by Alberto Testa and Tony Renis, was a number one hit for Mina Mazzini, one of the most successful Italian singers of all time. She has had some things in common with Lara, in terms of controversy (although different controversies) and she was once known as the ‘Queen of Screamers’ (an epithet Lara might find familiar ). Lara discusses her in terms of her mother’s influence in the different videos available for this song. In the song, Renaud sings to his young daughter Lolita Séchan about his own childhood with the realization that time flies away, as will the laughs of his daughter as a child. The title refers to a candy that was part of a lottery – if it was a winner (‘gagnant’), you received another one free. By the time he was an adult, it was no longer available.
The first choice is from the ‘En Toute Intimite’ DVD (including the little dance at the end, for the child in all of us), while the second is the duet with Amel Bent from the ‘concert for Lebanon. We end with ‘New York, New York’, emblematic of Lara’s love of show business, with the first choice being that wonderful ‘virtual duet’ with Frank Sinatra, and the second being her solo performance (in a Frank Sinatra-type suit). The last choice, included for sentimental reasons, is Lara’s duet with her friend Nathalie.
So, with these we bring to a close our review of the ‘Best of’ Lara live videos, related to songs she has either written or performed repeatedly. They were meant to fill in the gap caused by Lara’s illness, and thus we are just in time for Lara to start her own ‘Best of’ tour next week (little did we know when this was begun eight months ago that Lara would call her return tour by that name, although she had employed it previously in 'the countries to the east'). In all there were about 120 different titles reviewed, and over 350 videos discussed/linked. As was suggested to me, a complete listing of the videos chosen is given in a separate thread. [And, as we all know, even this does not complete the list of worthy Lara titles, for she has many wonderful ‘one-offs’, often duets, that might very well be up near the top of a ‘best of’ Lara video listing – it is no coincidence that so many of the cover songs reviewed in this Update include duets. If she ever has another extended lay-off [God forbid!], we will review those].
Lara gets back to work in earnest this coming week, to the delight/relief of her fans and undoubtedly to her own state of mind. There are 12 dates spaced over 22 days starting next Sunday, beginning with five concerts in Germany and then on to other countries in eastern Europe, before finishing up in Finland. For those who can’t be there personally, hopefully there will be many new videos recorded for all of us to enjoy.
