There was somewhat of a ‘lull before the storm’ this past week, although in preparation for her upcoming tour, Lara left the following message (in translation) on her LF Twitter site this past week:
(Lara Fabian official @lfabianofficial #FF): “To all those who are there, follow me and make these magical moments... LOV.”
In what turns out to be a running theme in this Update: of course, many of those who will be ‘following her’ in the countries she will visit will be more familiar with English than French, so it is not obvious why that ‘Tweet’ was posted only in French. However, as a note “pour les anglophones”, she used her FB site to publicize the interview she gave in English associated with her upcoming Romanian concert at www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLBu-SGO80c [we covered it last week].
Meanwhile notice continues to be taken by the French speaking media of Lara’s international affairs. The Closer had a little segment on Lara’s activities, at:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=suVdsl9W1Nk
In addition to the Turkish experience, they note the upcoming tour but, as usual, when the French list the cities and countries where Lara will next perform, they add “but not in France”. They also repeated the news of Lara’s planned release of two albums next spring, one French and one English. It still remains to be seen whether there is to be a separate new release with Igor Krutoi, which Lara has not been speaking about, but which Krutoi has mentioned several times.
As additional follow-ups to Lara’s partnership with Mustafa Ceceli, the Lara Fabian Turkey site posted another very nice picture of the two of them, at:
www.facebook.com/Larafabianturkiye/photos/a.682431461833636.1073741829.682422835167832/707917259285056/?type=1&theater
while the Lara Fabian Mexico FB site pointed to a video listing for the Spanish language site ‘La Lista De Exitos’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzZh3D_tjmU) where their duet ‘Make Me Yours Tonight’ was #19, and ‘Sammy Su’, in one of the replies, indicated that yesterday it had moved up to #2.
The Lara Fabian Mexico site also displayed the following poster:
www.facebook.com/1435374930013545/photos/a.1435484533335918.1073741828.1435374930013545/1511949149022789/?type=1&theater
The songs listed are Je t’aime encore, Love by Grace, Je me souviens, No Big Deal, Make Me Yours Tonight, Danse, Humana, Lou, Toccami, Tout, Part of Me, To Love Again/Si tu m’aimes, I Will Love Again, Unbreakable, Le Secret, Je t’aime, Deux ils, deux elles, I Am A-Wa, J’y crois encore/I’ve Cried Enough, Aimer deja, Adagio. So, language-wise, there are10 in French, 9 in English (including some four from ‘A Wonderful Life’), 2 in Italian. It’s not clear whether this is simply their wish-list or if it refers to an actual set-list. Twenty-one full songs would be a lot, although not impossible especially as an acoustic set. If Lara were really to intend this, it would show creativity and initiative; one wonders however, why this was posted with no explanation. Time will tell whether it is at all relevant.
Lara’s short interview on the TV5 program “A la vie, a la mode” aired this past week, (thanks to Jean Cristoffer Santos) at:

Lara emphasized the productions of Jean Paul Gauttier, whose work can be seen on his website, at www.jeanpaulgaultier.com/en. He has outfitted many celebrities, and Lara noted that he produced the outfit she wore in New York. As usual she also emphasized her handbag, and her ‘beauty secret’ is laughter with people she loves. Lara is an interesting choice for this show, for ‘fashion’ has never really been her main thing, as witnessed by the slacks she has often worn to her concerts in France and Belgium. Her best outfits as we all know are those she has displayed in Russia, which she ‘excused’ by saying “that’s what they expect over there”. Just last week she was quoted in the Turkish ‘Cosmopolitan’ article as saying that she doesn’t like shopping for clothes. Even the outfit in New York was not really what one would have expected a ‘diva’ to wear for her first show at Carnegie Hall (e.g., www.youtube.com/watch?v=56lx8NDYt1c); it was similar to the one she wore when performing ‘New York, New York’ on the Symphonic Show (4/29/06) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUZLi9TMwNA), a take-off on Frank Sinatra’s customary outfit for that song (see Lara’s “duet” with him from ‘Simplement pour un soir’ of 3-30-13, www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiCHuhmKgO4). So it would have made some sort of sense - except she didn’t sing that song in New York.
Not that Lara cannot be fashionable anywhere when she has a mind to – see the beautiful outfit Lara is wearing in a picture posted recently on the Lara Fabian - PHQ site

Lara was among the many people offering tribute to Michel Drucker celebrating his 50 years on TV. Lara is shown at the 13:49 mark of the full program (for about 22 seconds), noting how special this anniversary is, at:
www.rtbf.be/video/detail_69-minutes-sans-chichis?id=1954919
After all the discussion of Lara possibly replacing Jenifer on the French version of ‘The Voice’ (e.g., www.non-stop-people.com/actu/tv/jenifer-pourquoi-lartiste-pourrait-quitter-voice-54845; www.public.fr/News/Exclu-Public-Amel-Bent-ou-Lara-Fabian-qui-remplacera-Jenifer-525931), Thierry Palomares on the MZ FB site noted that Jenifer has re-signed (rather than resigned) after all (see also the-voice.programme-tv.net/the-voice-saison-3/news/56950-jenifer-mika-rempileraient-bruel-remplacer-pagny/). The article indicates that Jenifer (who gave birth to a boy August 13th and had reportedly wanted to spend more time with her family) changed her mind in the last few months (as did Mika, another ‘judge’). This would have been a great chance for Lara to re-integrate herself with the French public.
However, Lara apparently has taken another opportunity in that regard. Last week it was noted that while Lara will be featured on the upcoming disc celebrating 30 years of ‘top 50 music’ (http://www.emissions-tv.com/emissions/301/les_30_ans_du_top_50), she would not be present on the program itself. Now several of the fan sites (but not Lara’s official site) have reported she will appear for its recording. If true, perhaps the little ‘tweaks’ she’s been getting in the French press (like in the ‘Closer’ video above) have had an effect.
Now for the ‘best of’ videos for this week. There will be four to close out the alphabet, and an additional one (Tu t’en vas) that was egregiously overlooked previously (though not the only overlooked title – see the note at the end).

‘Tu t’en vas’ was one of Lara’s great early songs, from the ‘Carpe Diem’ album. It was chosen by Universal to be included in Lara’s ‘best of’ release, deservedly so. Lara generally hasn’t sung it in its full version in the last decade, though she did include it in a ‘medley’ a few years ago. The first choice is an early performance on the Sonia Benezra show in Montreal, while the second comes from the ‘Molson Centre’ live TV production. Another wonderfully sung early version can be found at (https://app.box.com/s/n39e09gy5r2r2x2eoc3n).
‘Yelliel My Angel’ from the first English album thematically could have fit on the ‘Le Secret’ album. The first choice is from the ‘From Lara with Love’ show, while the second is from the ‘Baden Baden’ concert in the same time-frame. Unlikely that she will sing it this fall in Germany .
The Yentl medley is obviously Lara’s homage to Barbra Streisand. The first choice, a bit slower and more powerful, is from the Molson Centre show, while the second is from her ‘Un regard neuf’ DVD. She sang it regularly on that tour, as can be seen in several other videos (https://app.box.com/s/qqw1jw3re2jlhlap65il; www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGa0d8lLqVk). Lara said she was surprised by the great reception it received from the French audience, being a song in English, and one can think that it contributed to her re-incorporating English songs into her repertoire on subsequent French tours (e.g., Adagio, I Will Love Again).
‘You Are My Heart’, from the first English album, features an excellent duet with Dorian Sherwood, who played drums and keyboards on several of Lara’s tours, but also occasionally sung with her (another example, ‘Africa’ from the ‘Nue’ DVD and tour). Again from the ‘Baden, Baden’ concert, and again unlikely to be sung at the concerts coming up in Germany .
‘You’re Not From Here’, again from the first English album, completes the quartet of English songs that close out the alphabet (helped by the scarce use of w, x, y or z as first letters in French). The first choice is from the ‘From Lara With Love’ show, and it allows the presentation of Lara’s anecdote concerning her conviction that at a young age she ‘knew’ she was a singer. The second is, one more time, from the Baden Baden concert and… .
While this finishes the alphabetic review of Lara’s ‘Best of’ videos, there were a few that are ‘her songs’ which were (somewhat accidentally) skipped (often with only one or two videos available). Since we have two weeks of Updates to go before Lara resumes her live concerts, next week we will fill in that oversight. The following week we will conclude with songs that are not ‘hers’ but that she has sung occasionally, and it would not be shocking for her to sing again.
Lara has now been back in the public eye for more than a month, and has already resumed many aspects of her public persona. In three weeks, the rest of her career will come back on-line. One imagines that she can’t wait.
