Lara (or her people) made an attempt to keep in touch with fans this past week, posting a link to the ‘Danse’ video, and wishing people a happy vacation. The implication was that Lara was also on vacation, although we know that this coming Saturday she is set to appear in the ‘New Wave’ show in Latvia. While she won’t have to really sing, she will have to lip-sync the words, and therefore hear the music – and that will require her to wear in-ear plugs, perhaps for the first time in public since January. [She might have been doing this already, while in the rehearsals mentioned last week]. It will be the first of many upcoming tests of her ears…
And the Lara Fabian Twitter account also woke up, with an advertisement for the New Wave program, at:
www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=745031045538395
This was then also put on her FB site.
An article about her upcoming performance appeared on the Russian news site ‘mixnews.lv’ (http://www.mixnews.lv/ru/new-wave-2014/news/2014-07-14/154949), including a picture from the Mme. Zhivago movie. Here’s a translation:
--------------------------------------------------
The first appearances of Lara began with her devotion (to her music) at the age of 14 years. And she obtained her place for the "Eurovision" contest in 1988, in which the singer has represented Luxembourg and got the 4th place with the composition "Je crois".
All 17 original Lara Fabian albums have sold more than 12 million albums. The most important event in this fascinating artist's career became her international reputation. Lara Fabian is known and loved, and even through her tandem with the famous Russian composer Igor Krutoy. Their collaboration has resulted in an original album "Mademoiselle Zhivago", in which Lara Fabian and Igor Krutoy travelled in almost all countries of the Commonwealth of independent States (Editor's Note: Soviet countries). Now, the singer and the president of the jury of the "New Wave" are ready to record a new album.
-------------------------------------------------------
The festival will actually be broadcast on Ukrainian TV (let’s hope the power stays on!). The link for that is:
newwave.kanalukraina.tv/ru/2014/
Hopefully there will also be a full complement of youtube videos available following the show…
In other news, Nicolas Boucaud on the MZ FB site indicated that next season Lara would be on the program “Stars au grand” which is broadcast on TF1. This is similar to the show “Parenthèse Innatendue” that Lara was on last year, in which four people spend time together, discussing whatever comes up – except that in this case there are four singers, and during the show they each do one of the other singers’ songs. Not sure where he got his information (the link he provided was removed) – on the website for that show, they (so far) do not list Lara, and the first two program slots are already filled. Perhaps she is scheduled for later in the year, although it would be somewhat odd for them to choose a person who had been on a competing show of the same nature. If she was chosen, we could presumably get a complete rundown on her health, the upcoming album with Krutoi, the tour and other topics that she has largely not discussed with her public in the last 7 months.
Sonia Nogués on the MZ FB site posted a wonderful picture of Lara (with Mario Frangoulis) – one of the best photos of her I’ve seen. It’s available at:
www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10154378139375523&set=a.10150237376560523.480628.191575835522&type=1&theater
In the same vein, the ‘Lara Fabian International’ FB page posted a rare picture of Lara singing ‘The Prayer’ with Andrea Bocelli, at:
www.facebook.com/LaraFabianTheVoiceOfPassion/photos/a.903191376363005.1073741865.720473304634814/903191523029657/?type=1&theater
Continuing our report on other fan websites, larafabiannewsbr posts many interesting videos on youtube – see: www.youtube.com/user/larafabiannewsbr/videos
For example, they just posted a nearly half-hour video of the recording session for the first English album from the summer of 1999, featuring songs such as an acapella “Part of Me’, an acoustic version of ‘To Love Again’, as well as "I Will Love Again", "Yeliel" and "Broken Vow" (listening sessions), at:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBWqWMd4Ihc&list=UU94EW8AVYas0oZFO5J-GKXw
Concerning music initially from the same album, they also put on the audio of “I Will Love Again/I Will Survive” from the ‘Nue’ tour, that was cut from the CD/DVD because of a disagreement between Sony (who owned the rights) and Universal (who released the CD/DVD). This version with Kim Richardson from a show in Paris, is at:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QmS2KSwR4M
Lara’s decision to choose a different record company for her English album releases compared with her French albums caused her continual headaches, and ultimately sabotaged her English career. For one thing, it prevented just this sort of mixture of ‘hits’ from her two types of albums when her popularity was on the rise. In addition, when the management of Sony/Columbia changed, she no longer had any support in the company, as she did not have the successful French albums to bolster her importance to them. Her reasoning was that it would allow her to release twice as many albums, alternating between the two companies, a bet that ultimately failed to materialize. Of course she is playing that game again, now with Krutoi, and this time the ‘management’ for the non-French career is fully in her corner - however, the time spent on that effort takes her away from her French audience, and has led in part to her losing her French record company. Also, perhaps due to her previous experience, she now has the mindset that she must keep the two audiences apart - e.g., not mentioning the upcoming tour of ‘the countries to the east’ on her FB site until it was ‘outed’ in the French press, not releasing (a partial version of) Mme. Zhivago CD in France until pressed by fans, and now not mentioning the new album at all. [In fact, it’s a little surprising that she advertised (at the last minute) the ‘New Wave’ festival on her FB and Twitter sites, generally reserved only for ‘French’ affairs]. One wonders how Lara’s life would have been different if she had chosen Universal for the English language releases as well (they were one of the bidders).
Now for the next three ‘best of’ videos:
Requiem pour un fou: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gdq4kIpN6C4
Reveille Toi Brother: www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_qR1L6NJ5E
: www.youtube.com/watch?v=dA-AfldabpU
: app.box.com/s/vjn1c4o2sll4z59ouet2
Russian Fairy Tale: app.box.com/s/v1j9ivbbpvond7imcs2s
‘Requiem pour un fou’ is of course one of Lara’s great energetic duets and great videos – probably would be in the top five if not the very top of most people’s lists. In addition, it was, according to Lara, her big break for her career in France, as it took place during Johnny Hallyday’s show at the Stade de France, before 70,000 fans. Johnny released the duet as a single and it reached number 8 on the French charts, while Lara included the duet on her Live album (the album which opened at #1 on the French charts). The version chosen here is more complete than the official video of it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L2F-XfdsPc) in that it shows a bit more of the performers’ reaction after the song ended. They did another performance together, just a little less impassioned, on the ‘Les Enfoires’ show that same year (1998) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4v3LE9l1pwc). Subsequently Lara has done a few other duets of it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9PuOt0BvtM), (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22cGTA5OmJk), (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8IZG_9liDI), all good in their own way (and even in an amateur setting - www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUUUoH-3sKs) as the song fits nicely into her vocal range.
One of Lara’s first ‘singles’ and videos, ‘Reveille Toi Brother’ is another song in which she pours a lot of energy into the presentation. There are only a few videos of it available, and fortunately they’re all noteworthy due to her exuberance. The first two are from her live Pure concerts, in Brussels and at the Molsen Centre; the third is from one of her earlier TV appearances, as one can tell from her hair, at the other end of the color spectrum . The very creative official video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogtu4_3sZ2U) is also worth seeing.
‘Russian Fairy Tale’ is one of the Mademoiselle Zhivago songs that was often lip-synced, for no apparent reason (it doesn’t require extreme vocal range) except perhaps for Krutoi’s insistence. We have available several good live videos, the best perhaps being the one chosen from Perm. Another good version is available from Dnepropetrovsk (https://app.box.com/s/0jqdqmn1w6o7dqiwzrcb). And of course this was the music to one of the more affecting videos from the MZ movie, under the title ‘Winter’s Bouquet’ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROXU_Wp3dHk).
So Lara returns to the public stage in a few days – end of a long drought, and hopefully the beginning of a fertile period, for her and her audience. However long it’s been for her fans, it must seem a lot longer for her, with all the attendant uncertainty. Let’s hope it goes perfectly, and she emerges with renewed confidence and hope for the future .
