Lara is once again ‘on the town’, at least to the extent that she is attending public events. A beautiful picture was posted on the MZ FB site of Lara with a fan, taken at the ‘Make A Wish’ show in Brussels this past weekend. It can be seen at:
www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10202957411247692&set=gm.767277213316393&type=1&theater
You may remember that Lara is an active participant in this charity; a year ago, she appeared with her daughter Lou. Its goal is to “grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy”.
Then on Sunday, ‘La page des Fabianesk’ reported that Lara attended the show of Joelle Morane (who was not only the director of this show, but also fulfilled that role for the ‘Le Secret’ tour). Apparently Lara looked very well (as can be seen in the photo below), and was accompanied by her father and Lou.

Last Saturday was the event ‘Televie’ organized by RTL-TV in Belgium, to help provide support for those battling leukemia and other forms of cancer. The promo for it was made available, at:
www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10152308713077226&set=vb.223511837225&type=2&theater
Lara’s gold record, and Lara herself were shown in the promo but that was from a previous year. There is no indication she was actually at the auction – she’s not mentioned at all or shown in any of the numerous photos available in the reporting, at: www.dhnet.be/medias/television/dans-les-coulisses-bouillonnantes-du-televie-535d3e4f3570f9d799726a11
You may also remember that Sébastien Delhez organized an effort for people to send in audio comments of support to Lara, on a CD. They have now gotten a response; here’s their message: “SURPRISE ANGELS: this is it! Our Lara has now received the CD with audio messages of support from her angels. A moment filled with surprise and emotion. She wishes to send this photo through to every one of the angels in appreciation for this wonderful gift. Thanks to Lara for being so warm and touched by this gesture”.

There is nothing like fan initiative to surprise and please Lara. Perhaps in response,
Lara also is trying reciprocate as best she can to the fans. On her FB and Twitter sites, she (or her people) posted the following (translated) message:
“Good day to all”.

The link is to the old professional video of ‘J’y crois encore’. It’s not clear why Lara chose that, except perhaps as a symbol of her hoped-for recuperation; coincidentally, it does validate the (obvious) comment from last week’s News Update that it is one of her favorite songs.
There are all sorts of advertisements popping up concerning Lara’s October concerts in the ‘countries to the east’. For example:
At Bucharest, Romania (10/20/14):
www.infomusic.ro/2014/04/lara-fabian-romania-2014/
At Sofia, Bulgaria (10/22 (sold out),23/14): www.facebook.com/246805652001644/photos/a.247913198557556.83420.246805652001644/842486492433554/?type=1&theater; www.facebook.com/ARTBGBULGARIA/photos/a.389195572326.176869.53546582326/10152012469742327/?type=1&theater; www.facebook.com/ARTBGBULGARIA/photos/a.389195572326.176869.53546582326/10152012073022327/?type=1&theater;
At Turku, Finland (10/25/14) (sold out, so that another concert was added on 10/26); [for some reason, Lara’s official URL refers to it as Helsinki, also in the south, but further east]:
www.turkulainen.fi/artikkeli/291723-lara-fabian-lokakuussa-turkuun
What we have to say about these is: “Buyer Beware”, especially if you have to travel to get to them. The notices originate in those countries, and so far, none of them seems to have been openly acknowledged by Lara, even with a comment, outside of her including them on her URL tour dates. Her FB site is still mum concerning any upcoming concert or tour. If it were any other artist, the widespread dissemination of information like this would suggest that the concerts are a certainty, but we know that Lara has often let her dreams run ahead of reality… (Italian album? ‘Victor, Victoria’ in a Paris theatre production? The film Charlie?, etc., etc.) Hopefully, she will find out sooner rather than later whether these performances (or at least some of them) will be possible. Interestingly, they are being advertised as ‘Le Secret’ concerts, which implies that the new album with Krutoi will not be available by then. And, presumably, if she will be back promoting her current album, it raises the possibility of her filming a DVD of the show after all (and may explain why the video made from fan contributions has not yet appeared).
There is a news report associated with the French version of “The Voice”: Jennifer is leaving the ‘jury’ to have a child, and a replacement is needed. The magazine ‘Public’ has listed Lara as a leading candidate in an article at:
www.20minutes.fr/television/1360849-les-salaires-du-jury-de-the-voice-lara-fabian-en-lice-pour-remplacer-jenifer . Lara has said in the past that she would be interested in participating in this role (she had been an advisor previously). After her stint on ‘The Best of’, voting on acts that were far from her own milieu, she was attracted to the idea of helping inform younger performers about something she really knows. ‘The Voice’, besides being France’s biggest TV entertainment show with over 9 million viewers, offers another inducement: the article indicates that salaries of the jurors are hundreds of thousands of euros. It would also be a further step in cementing her current-day relationship with the French public. Although we don’t know whether the rumors have any merit, Lara’s acceptance would certainly be another indication of her health expectations…
In other television related news, the ‘Best of’ show on which Lara was a jury member last year, is not doing so well. The percentage of viewing audience is now about 15% (http://tele.premiere.fr/News-Tele/Audiences-TV-The-Best-TF1-chute-encore-au-profit-de-Candice-Renoir-sur-France-2-3988863); last year it was generally around 20%, peaking at 27% for its finale. One can’t say that the difference was solely, or even largely, due to Lara’s participation, but she certainly added a spark to the proceedings.
Now for our next three ‘best of’ videos…and as luck and the alphabet would have it, they include two of Lara’s most iconic songs…
Je reve d’une etoile: www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5SuueLXUj8
: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCPkdd8lZW8
Je suis malade: app.box.com/s/ynswli5h91k1y091mdv4
Je t’aime: www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJlC4qoo3ro
Despite the abbreviated ‘Le Secret’ tour, we have a number of excellent renditions of ‘Je reve d’une etoile’. The first choice due to the video quality is from her TV appearance on ‘Les chansons d'abord’; it is one of the very few songs that she performed live on TV from ‘Le Secret’ outside of ‘Deux ils, deux elles’ (and many of those were lip-synched). But to capture the true spirit of the song we have to go to the concert performances, and there were many good ones. The second choice given above was from her concert in Moscow, the one in which her reflective glove (to produce ‘stars’) did not work, but she was rescued by the fans using the lights from their phones to produce the same effect. Lara’s amazement and appreciation make this a video to remember. Other versions of interest including the audience’s extreme production of lights with the help of balloons in Paris (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLdbxaQFf6w), so big that it could also have worked for ‘Il est lune’ ; a video including the use of the glove, the following day (https://app.box.com/s/z0gl5h2txyrhbl5jauyi); as well as the multi-angle Showcase performance of the song (https://app.box.com/s/d97kx4vwmyiy28lwtac1).
There are close to 80 videos of ‘Je suis malade’, and given that it has become one of her signature songs (and her most performed song that she didn’t write or initiate), many of them are wonderfully emotive. The choice here is from the show ‘La Fureur’ and it is Lara in her prime, vocally and emotionally. This has long been known as one of her great videos, so its selection is no great surprise. Coincidentally, the fans provided points of light at this show, too. Other versions of note include the duet with Serge Lama on Tapis Rouge (https://app.box.com/s/2p4cntc9js2kfx431dqv), some others with extreme emotion, e.g., the performance on Rock Detente (https://app.box.com/s/hw78vx8a2xr1pbw6ftdo) and Entrevue Ad Lib (https://app.box.com/s/c9uy048desauvwfea9hv), the powerful version on From Lara With Love (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGthVEza97U), the sensitive ETI version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BI6ysCN4CY0), and, as nod to a more recent performance, from the Moscow TV concert (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjLEVtm00-0). Also, the version of a sitting Lara joined by the audience always brings a smile (https://app.box.com/s/cb87h7m2ve6y9nn4yxdd).
‘Je t’aime’ is, of course, the song with the most videos – I count some 155 of them. In terms of the choice, almost everything (except the lights) noted above about the selection for ‘Je suis malade’ applies here too, except it is for the version from the ‘World Music Awards’ in 1999 : extreme singing and emotion, widely recognized as one of her great videos. As with the previous song, there are many other wonderful renditions: the version with 500 choristes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XU2reIZJtuY); the softer version from ETI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xNhERjA1zE); two additional older, powerful version from Faites_La_Fete(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNU2w1OTzmU) and Tapis Rouge (https://app.box.com/s/r04xvnqste03438jv8js); the version for Gorbachev’s 80th birthday (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubWK5TuOTTY); the wonderful emotional version from the Nue tour (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgVDPabrjDk); the powerful Molson Centre performance (https://app.box.com/s/9i62n06zpu7oqqnqsbyu); her celebratory appearance at La Victoires (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ox-VB9g8-mo). No recounting of this song would be complete without the two well-known versions sung to Lara, by Serge Lama’s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKVf7sjDp_0), and, ‘On t’aime’, by the fans at Nimes (https://app.box.com/s/nl5sknxhfyeboo3g4r2u). For all of her other accomplishments, the one line epitaph about Lara when her career is over will probably read, “the singer of Je t’aime”.
Until Lara gets back onto the stage, nobody, herself included, will know for sure how well her ears will hold up. However, prior to that, everything appears to be looking up!
