Lara Fabian: The Insurmountable Decision
The singer was quite joyfully presenting her new show on stage to fans equally enthusiastic to discover it. Unfortunately, the state of her health obliged her to make a difficult choice: that of disappointing them.
SHE HAD TO REORGANIZE HER TOUR…
Some months ago, the team of the Belgian artist had announced in a communiqué that she suffered health problems that her very ambitious tour could aggravate. Thus she had been constrained to suppress certain dates and to modifiy others. The singer was then invested to give the best of herself on stage, while managing her health as much as possible, but her following medical tests delivered a new verdict, much more difficult to accept.
…BUT IT WASN’T ENOUGH
To communicate the heartbreaking news to her fans, it is directly to them, and by means of a video posted on her Facebook page, that she chose to address them. One sees there the artist at home, installed behind her piano, delivering with a smile which didn’t hide her sadness and disappointment: “The reorganization of my tour was not sufficient to stem my internal ear problems. Even if my voice is well, my ears, they are truly damaged. And, like everyone, to heal, I am going to have to rest and take some hefty medications, and especially stay away from excessive exposure to strong sounds for long weeks”. The ‘bomb’ had been released. Lara Fabian had declared to have been forced to definitely annul her tour.
AN APOLOGY
Pained for thus disappointing all those who patiently waited to discover or rediscover her on stage, the singer expressed the painful feelings that she felt: “When the problem was declared, I thought for an instant to stop all, but I didn’t arrive to resolve that. It is a very difficult decision to make and, day after day, we tried to delay the date”. If she had put so much of herself into this album that she wanted to present it to all fans on stage across this tour which held her heart, she nevertheless remembers some good moments from past dates: “When I regard the course, I tell myself that we visited severn countries, more than twenty-three cities, and that these images remain in me. I would like to thank again all those, and those who came to see me or have accepted with much patience all the inconveniences that had to be caused. I apologize and I thank all for having participated to make these moments something still exceptional.
DIFFICULT TO GIVE UP
Very moved, the singer continued: “It is difficult to give up on that which one loves the most, and which is why one acts. But the truth is that, if I had continued, I would not have been able to sing at 100%, I would not have been abel to deliver to you all that I am, and an artist gives all or nothing, it is impossible to economize. That is why I have decied to obey the decision of my doctors, and to stop”. Regretting however that the dates that she could do had not been filmed, the singer asked her fans who assisted her by sending photos and videos taken during her concerts to keep a souvenir of this aborted tour.
SUSTAINED BY HER FANS
In the thousands of reactions, the fans of Lara Fabian have expressed their support of the talented singer. Very saddened by this news, which some describe as a ‘blow with a club’, they have nevertheless, given proof of a great understanding. They value her courage and recommend to her to rest and gain strength from her family. Even if this decision was difficult for all, they agree that it was the best to take. Numerous are those who responded to the call of their idol in sending to her their images of her tour, that she has chosen to compile and to offer to them. Without doubt that, once rested, the artist who is so loved will return stronger than ever.

Nothing really new here (but in these slow news days, we take what we can get ). It is interesting that at least a bit of the French press is still playing up Lara’s predicament some 3 months after it was first announced. It is also noteworthy that they don’t discuss the details of her problem, focusing instead on her attitude toward her fans. Ultimately, if she does recover fully as the article predicts, it is the blip in her status as a public figure that will be remembered in the popular press, not the precise medical issue that caused it.
In contrast, ‘La page des Fabianesk’ provided a link to a blog that focuses on the medical problem,
apprendre-a-chanter-et-oser.com/lara-fabian-perte-d-audition-actualite-et-cours-de-chant/
Key points in the article include:
**A number of people have suffered trauma which has led to a hearing loss;
**This loss produces a ‘hole’ in hearing ability at around 4000 Hz ;
**It generates a slight ‘blur’ in understanding, in distinguishing in the middle of other sounds - e.g., hard to understand voices in a crowd;
**The article goes on to urge people to protect their ears at concerts, either with professionally made ear plugs, or even rolling a handkerchief into a ball.
Again, nothing really new here, but it shows that perhaps Lara’s example may actually help save people from hearing problems down-the-road…
Outside of these few articles, the primary occupation of most of Lara’s fan sites continues to be the showing of various old photos or videos. In our continuing highlighting of various Lara fan sites, don’t miss the ‘Lara Fabian videos’ site, in particular the wonderful pictures they show:

There are also some nice photos at ‘Entre nous et Lara’, at

And then there is ‘Lara Fabian Mexico’:
www.facebook.com/LaraFabianMexicoOficial
For those who have never seen the complete ‘From Lara With Love’, ~one hour 25 minutes long that was shown on European TV (instead of the one hour PBS version), Lara Fabian Mexico has put it on youtube (albeit with Spanish subtitles). It is available at:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=AySSzS5F0f4
You may remember that this is the version in which Lara performed ‘White Christmas’, which Sony then, oddly, released as a single (even though the video was not seen in the U.S.). Another example of their crazy misuse of her. However, that single can still be heard in the States occasionally at Christmas time.
Back to our ‘best videos’ of Lara’s songs:

: app.box.com/s/qjq567lxy67iu2cvhush
Il n’est manquait que toi: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oT5JCOo9lA
The choices this week were relatively simple. Although there are several other good versions of ‘Ici’, the pick here was from the Molson Centre TV production for its visual sophistication, and of course, from that show, Lara’s wonderful singing.
For ‘Il est lune, there are two choices, as usual for most of the ‘Le Secret’ videos. The first is from the showcase presentation in Paris, with its multi-angles. The second is as it was usually done on tour, here from the Brussels complete concert. Other good versions of this can be found from her Paris concerts.
And for ‘II n’est manquait que toi’, again the visual sophistication of the professional production on the “Un Regard Neuf” DVD makes this the obvious choice.
We are two weeks away from the first anniversary of the release of ‘Le Secret’, a time when people have speculated that Lara might release the video of her tour compiled from fan contributions. ‘Evergig’ put an equivalent version of the Paris Showcase together in a matter of a few weeks, while it’s now been a few months since the fan material was provided to her. The article translated above mentioned it once again; perhaps that will serve as a reminder to her. We'll also begin to see whether she is now involved in another necessary extended period of relative isolation.
