Lara was definitely in St. Malo, Brittany this past week, as we can see from some very nice photos of her with a fan, (posted by Rozenn Roz on the MZ FB site), available at:
www.facebook.com/pages/Le-Caf%C3%A9-du-coin-den-bas-de-la-rue-du-bout-de-la-ville-den-face-du-port/77767197122
or more directly:
www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151992049117123&set=pcb.10151992050112123&type=1&theater
Apparently, she also went to stores, a spa, an art gallery….
In addition, a brief ‘tweet’ (copied on the MZ FB site) indicated that “Lara is spending her evenings eating at a restaurant (Le cap horn) with her husband and daughter amidst laughter…”
twitter.com/search?q=lecaphorn&src=typd
As can be noted, the respondents believe that the restaurant referred to is the Paris bistro, but presumably this is the one in St. Malo, (http://www.thalassotherapy.com/restaurants/cap-horn/).
What caught people’s attention were the public exposure and ‘laughter’ aspects, considering Lara’s hearing problems. Clearly she does not feel the need for strict seclusion/silence (hopefully her doctors agree!).
Lara’s ailment has certainly sensitized the French speaking world to the dangers of hearing loss due to loud sounds. The Swiss publication ‘Le Matin’ had a big article on the subject (http://www.lematin.ch/sante-environnement/sante/jeune-adulte-deux-deja-souffert-trouble-auditif/story/31881992). The sobering commentary included the following (translated) statement: “No treatment is effective today to regenerate hair cells destroyed (i.e., to overcome hearing loss), warns the doctor. But some products, cortisone, or vasodilators (dilators of blood vessels) may be prescribed to help the still living cells recover."
Be that as it may…Lara is still trying to carry on with her career, in whatever way she can. One aspect of this is the release in Canada of ‘La vie est la’ as the second single release in that country from ‘Le Secret’. An article at www.musicordisques.ca/page_layout/view/node/1692
reads (in translation) as follows:

Lara Fabian launches the second single from her album Le Secret, ‘La vie est la’
Montreal, February 19, 2014
After the successful radio release of “Deux ils, deux elles”, Lara Fabian offers a song full of emotions, which poses an intimate look at her life. With ‘La vie est la’, the performer demonstrates once again the richness and power of her voice. Praying on pop –rock tones and deploying a surprising vocal register, this new clip promises to become a staple of the repertoire of the singer. Lara Fabian made a brand new arrangement for the reissue of her last title, ‘La vie est la’.
If the text of the song is signed by the hand of the singer, the music is a collaboration with Janey Clewer, who worked over the years with big names like Ray Charles , Elton John, Cher as well as Gregg Mangiafico, renown keyboardist, having recorded with Michael Jackson and Billy Joel. Musical arrangements of the song are signed by Samy Deluxe under the pseudonym Dr. Zorn.
Look into the eyes of your life,
Life knows who you are,
And if with impunity you forget
It will know to guide you ... It's true ...
Back to yourself...
Life is there.
Lara Fabian launched last September an album of original songs steeped in emotion, Le Secret. A strong immediate success in France, the album has topped the charts with over 100,000 copies sold. Fans have waited too long before hearing again the sound of the singer, however, the wait will be worth it since the 17 tracks on the concept album Le Secret signal the strong comeback of the artist.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Good luck to it! The FB site ‘Lara Fabian est ton autre’ also indicated that it will be broadcast on Belgian radio as well (where the album has ‘jumped back up’ to #97). So far it has not been on the French airwaves, unfortunately. [BTW, either the article is wrong, or ‘Danse’ was never released as a single in Canada, and if so, presumably the video wasn’t either…].
There is a summary available of how Lara has done on the world-wide charts in approximately the last 10 years (note that this time period is less successful commercially than her first 10 years…). It is available at: acharts.us/performer/lara_fabian Presumably it is referring to the charts in France. Here’s what it says: “Lara Fabian has 8 albums and 8 songs which made it to the charts as of [from] week 10/2003. The songs spent a total of 119 weeks on the charts, and the albums a total of 275 weeks. Tu Es Mon Autre was the first song to hit the charts on week 10/2003, the last songs to appear on a chart were Caruso and Deux "ils" Deux "elles" on week 17/2013. The most successful song was La Lettre which spent a total of 30 weeks (25%) on the charts. The most successful song by peak position is La Lettre which peaked at number 11. The least successful song is Caruso it spent 1 week on the charts. Live: Un Regard 9 was the first album to hit the charts on week 10/2003, the last album to appear on a chart was Le Secret on week 49/2013. The most successful album was 9 which spent a total of 84 weeks (31%) on the charts. The most successful album by peak position is Le Secret which peaked at number 1. The least successful album is Best Of Lara Fabian it spent 1 week on the charts.

The overwhelming impression one gets is how underwhelming the commercial performance of ‘Le Secret’ has been…who knows whether the missed months of the tour would have changed the situation…One also doesn’t know whether this is because it is a ‘concept album’, without many natural stand-alone singles, or whether the French public has just gotten out of the habit of buying Lara’s albums. Note the list doesn’t include the Mlle. Zhivago CD, either in its highly successful Russian release or its French incarnation, as the latter was not made available through commercial outlets.
One more ‘sales’ item: people have noticed that Lara’s ‘Mlle. Zhivago’ Kremlin concert with Igor Krutoi is available on a commercial DVD, e.g.,
www.amazon.fr/Lara-Fabian-USA-Zone-1/dp/B000089Q6N/ref=sr_1_11?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1393271979&sr=1-11&keywords=lara+fabian
[While it says it is an import from the U.S., amazon.com in that country says it is not available]. Interesting cover picture! It will only cost you 235 euros…or you could buy the CD/DVD Mademoiselle Zhivago book, which includes that DVD as well as the French release of the album, for 45 euros - from the same location.
There’s speculation about who will be joining next season’s TV cast of the French version of ‘The Voice’, (The Voice : la plus belle voix) as Jenifer, one of the participants, has decided not to continue (http://www.jeanmarcmorandini.com/article-316970-la-chanteuse-jenifer-aurait-decide-de-ne-pas-participer-a-la-prochaine-saison-de-the-voice.html). Lara’s name is being mentioned:
www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10202542407152849&set=gm.731000506944064&type=1&theater
Apparently the choice will become official in the fall. At least on this program the contestants would be fully in her field of expertise, unlike the situation with ‘The Best’ (where, BTW, she’s been replaced by Cynthia Akanga, a choreographer). Independent of the program’s decision, her availability obviously would depend on her state of health at that time; one wonders if they will wait that long to decide.
In the current version of the show, Lara’s song ‘Tout’ was chosen as the second ‘battleground’ by Florent Pagny this past Saturday night; in response, Lara’s original version has jumped to 15th in ‘French variety’ on iTunes. Lara’s fans in general did not think much of how it was sung on the show, feeling that it did not measure up against Lara’s original. However, they also felt that Lara herself can no longer sing it with that same strength and fluidity. Despite it being perhaps the best selling French single of her career, it has fallen out of favor in her repertoire over the past few years.
The ‘Lara Fabian UK’ fans provided an Instagram photo from Bernard Depoorter, fashion designer whose work with Lara has gotten significant publicity in the past year. A great photo, with the accompanying statement “my girlfriend, a Queen of hearts! Big Kiss my beautiful Lara…” is located at:
Given current events, the ‘Lara Fabian Is Here FB site’ called out special attention to Lara’s Ukrainian fans and their website,
www.facebook.com/larafabianinukrainianhearts
It would be a nice gesture to support their page…
Now, continuing on with the choice of ‘best videos’ for Lara’s various songs:
Caruso: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zghquyoOZ0
Danse: app.box.com/s/1octv7to07eysdrgwz9x
app.box.com/s/dz85ycmopxoq45bgzpf6
Demaine n’existe pas: app.box.com/s/nx84flrlon2psapkjwkq
www.youtube.com/watch?v=5d5iqyL4Ot8
For Caruso, the choice is of the version from the PBS show “From Lara With Love”. Beautifully sung, and a sharp video. A close second choice is her recent performance with David Foster on ‘The Hitman Returns’; it is a shorter version, however (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZxwfRPez0k). There are a number of other excellent renditions as well, as Lara seems to revel in her Italian background when performing this title. Actually perhaps the best vocal performance, with the most dramatic tension, is the one from the program ‘Chabada’ (https://app.box.com/s/uie98sij0tpafjnv194h). I’ve removed most of the audio noise, but the video is still not perfect.
For ‘Danse’ there are two choices. The first is from the Paris Showcase that was put together by Evergig. With its multi-angles it is the most professional. The problem is that it doesn’t truly represent the stage set of the ‘Le Secret’ show for this song, nor does it include the dancer. That then is the reason for the second version; this is from the Brussels complete concert, extracted here by itself. There were other good versions; the video from Moscow (https://app.box.com/s/zh4bfmb2grxjdyrkg5nq) is arguably as good, while the one from Liege (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UB060eZZXh0) has the best close-ups.
For Demaine n’existe pas, there are again two choices. The primary one is the version sung live, and it is from the Prague concert. Another nice live performance is from Perm (https://app.box.com/s/2fus6ktkxvdnsyj9z5jv). However, this song was not sung in France, and as we know, many of the most prestigious appearances on TV in the ‘east’ (primarily Russia) had her lip-synching the performance. These are often so beautiful one can’t ignore them. The choice here is from the Moscow Kremlin concert; a close second would be the introduction of the song at the ‘New Wave’ Festival in Latvia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7cTuH34LCY).
Lara’s recent activities do not suggest someone in dire straits. While there’s a big gap between being ‘out and about’ and being on a stage full of loud musical instruments, it may be that her situation is nowhere near the worst case scenarios discussed in the various publications. Hopefully this past week has given us a better perspective…
