Lara’s concert week in Canada came to a close last night. The concerts in Quebec, Montreal, and, surprisingly, Toronto, returned to the ‘Le Secret’ format, including her wearing the Bernard Depoorter jacket with the album name on the back at the very beginning. The tracklist for the set in Quebec, as well as in general the other cities, (thanks to Nicolas Therrien and the Lara Fabian is Here FB site) included: * Le Secret * Danse * Amourexique * Que j'étais belle * La vie est là * Humana * J'y crois encore * Je t'aime * Il est lune * Je rêve d'une étoile * J'ai zappé * Immortelle * I am A-WA * I Will Love Again
Here are two translated reviews of the Quebec appearance. The first, to which Lara herself put a link on her FB site, can be found (with a picture of her wearing the jacket) at:

LARA FABIAN: THE THEATER OF LARA
Geneviève Bouchard
Le Soleil
(Quebec) Is it a coincidence that Lara Fabian titled her latest album ‘Le Secret’, the same as the psycho-pop flavored best-seller that glorifies positive thinking? For better and for worse, the singer brought a crowded Capitole Wednesday night on a journey to empowerment and self-acceptance in a quest for happiness tapping into spirituality ... and theater.
We can not blame the Belgian artist for sitting on her success in creating this show, mostly built around her new songs. She had a destination in mind with ‘Le Secret’: "Between silence, theater and music, we discover the path to self" to a "place where one is never longer entirely alone," she described Wednesday.
It is precisely in an elaborate staging and borrowing - not always very skillfully – from the theater that the artist returned to meet the public in the Capitole. On the stage waiting a hairdresser (the dressing table, not the hair expert!), a bird cage, a ballet bar. The singer has pushed out her opening notes with her back the crowd, but even once turned , it took a while before the connection with the public could truly be made.
In the first half of the show, Fabian developed a sort of removable fourth wall between her and the room: in a theatrical bubble during the songs, thanking emotionally between pieces. We saw her manipulate ballet slippers in a corner while a ballerina performing in the center of the stage.
She threw a laptop on the floor before singing “Un ange est tombe”, which addresses the loneliness caused by technology. She sang of eating disorders in ‘Amourexique’ before a distorting mirror and “Que j'étais belle” accompanied by a peacock-dancer. She gave us a thunderstorm while the violinist Pascale Croft waved a rain stick. In brief, some effects not always subtle that create distance and harvest mixed results: Lara Fabian does not need it to touch her fans. The public of the Capitole furnished proof of it Wednesday.
Fortunately, she let drop this pseudo fourth wall in the course of the performance. Halfway through, she announced that the time had come "to leave ‘Le Secret’ and to enter into joy." It was time! With percussionist Mélissa Lavergne, who took the forefront to harangue the crowd, the atmosphere was finally able to take off: the delivery of Humana galvanized fans. Ditto for the success ‘J’y crois encore’ and the mandatory ‘Je t’aime’, addressed beautifully in an acoustic segment, from which the singer emerged richer by two bouquets of flowers offered by admirers.
With a problem in the inner ear, Lara Fabian had to lighten her touring schedule. She seemed rather in form Wednesday, although one saw her often touching her hand to her ear. Vocally, other than a little hesitant interpretation of ‘I Will Love Again’ offered as an encore, she did well. Her recent songs put more on emotion than on the prowess of her instrument, so one can hardly reproach her for screaming. And nobody will complain.

The second, in the Journal of Quebec, can be found at:
www.journaldequebec.com/2014/01/08/les--je-taime-lara--fusent-au-capitole
------------------------------------------------------------
The Quebec public fell for Lara Fabian and the new maturity that shapes its Secret.
On a highly theatrical note, with tenderness, courage and an exemplary refinement, Lara Fabian shared her Secret with the public of Quebec, yesterday evening, rousing up a veritable circus of emotions stuffed with beautiful surprises.
We attended a vibrant reunion with shots of “Je t’aime” and “On t’aime” in a nearly full Capitole theatre where one seemed to celebrate the return of the prodigal child.
Three years after her passage on the Plains of Abraham, and just days after her triumph at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Belgian singer found herself in front of a clearly conquered-in-advance public and who did not expect a show as sustained in often the darkest of colors, but always consistent with her latest album, ‘Le Secret’. We would have liked more rhythmic pieces as in her finale, “I Will Love Again”.
We are faced with a new Lara Fabian, who surprises with material as refined as muscular, which transcends simple commercial pop. All served in a fancy package which picks up each song.
Each song is meant as a piece of an exploratory journey, sometimes with the appearance of a ballerina, sometimes with the showing of her own image in a distorting mirror, and later on the vaporous momentum of 'Immortelle'.
And now the tone is briefly happy on the air of ‘Humana’ supported by violin and a percussion festival, which will even make the blonde singer dance dressed in black, with retorts sung by a joyful public which will prove to her their admiration by standing and shouting loudly!
Just a few months after the revelation of the problem of sudden deafness which turned the beginning of the tour upside down and which forced her to reduce the pace of her shows, Lara Fabian appeared visibly in great form before the many songs that callfor a heavy vocal performance on her part .
The singer with the confessed desire to return to establish herself in Quebec arrives to reinvent herself in this show which leaves the beaten track and where everything was put in place to subtly dress each emotion.
The " I love you " and " We love you " come forth often from an emotional and packed audience .
Even if one does not always capture the words of her songs, each one is carried away by this beautiful poetry, especially when, in turn, the new bride sang a resounding " Je t’aime" with her four musicians grouped around her in an acoustic formula.

Then Lara was in Montreal for a ‘birthday’ concert – Lara’s 44th birthday was last Thursday - and, as reported by mcbg1, the band and audience sang happy birthday to her and a big cake was brought out. One can see a brief glimpse of it here:

Below is a (translated) fan review from ‘Lili Lou’ on the MZ FB site:
-----------------------------------------------------------
I turn to my little review of the concert on Jan. 9. Being my one and only concert, I waited for this moment but, I confess, with a little knot in my stomach. Will she be convincing ? The magic will it be at this rendezvous? Verdict: I really appreciated her performance. The voice was clearly there, without any hesitation or falsity. Bravo Miss! During this evening, I have not always been able to unravel the mysteries of ‘Le Secret’, but all the same we still leave soothed by the voice and the melodies. The audience welcomed Lara with open arms with many standing ovations and clearly, she was happy to be here. The small jokes then came thick and fast, and that was good in a show sometimes too well oiled. Very soon you realize that the reactions of the public are much more significant when Lara sings her most popular songs. This is legitimate, I grant you, but I must admit, the Secret (which I love ) is too personal, intimate and obscure.
Regarding songs, no " Putain de grand amour" or "Deux ils, deux elles”, the same thing for "Mirage" (so no husband, no phantoms). As for the decor, the stage was relatively small, it does not bother me too much. Otherwise, I'm not a fan of her outfit and her hair even less but these are just details. And then what is the interest starting the concert with her back to the public while the whole staging justifying this opening has been removed? I found the moment super long and a little awkward. In summary, I'm glad I went there , I enjoyed the moment. Lara is a singer with an exceptional voice for her to continue her journey ....
-----------------------------------------------------------
In all these reviews, we see elements of what this new album has meant for Lara’s public. The subtly and sophistication of the songs was appreciated and greatly admired, as well as the fact that Lara was not overwhelming the audience with her vocal power, as good as it was. But both suggest that the audience was really wanting the ‘old songs’, with all that vocal power. This gets right back to the original reviews of the album, praising it highly, but noting that it might not be that commercial. In retrospect, Lara faced a tricky problem in French Canada – her fans wanted this reunion, but they wanted in on familiar terms, and most were not overly ‘au courant’ with the new album. Perhaps she should have rethought the approach that treated Quebec as simply another province of France/Belgium, to be given the same show. For her audience in Canada, this was, as the second review noted, a ‘reunion’ tour, not particularly a ‘Le Secret’ one. Videos are available for both these concerts on the web, especially fragments of songs.
The lesson must have been learned on some level or other, for on Sunday, Lara appeared on the Canadian TVA channel as part of their Celebration 2014. A news program (in French) promoting it can be found at: www.dailymotion.com/video/x19i8wx_10-janv-2014-le-tva-nouvelles-de-18hr-gatineau-ottawa_news?start=7. A brief news flash concerning the artists in rehearsal can be seen at: tva.canoe.ca/emissions/salutbonjour/chroniques/sb/chroniqueculturelle/205396/celebration-2014-les-artistes-en-repetition
Lara put an Instagram photo of herself, some minutes before the celebration, at:
She included the comment that her “trip to Quebec had been magical, thanks”.
And another photo getting ready:
On the show itself, she performed a nine-minute medley of songs: Tu t'en vas; I will love again; Je t'aime; Saisir le jour; and Deux ils, deux elles. The selection ‘celebrated’ her Canadian, and North American heritage, while the last song was the upbeat version mixed for the Canadian edition of ‘Le Secret’. This was exactly what the audience wanted to hear; Lara performed wonderfully, in great voice and spirit, and was received with a standing ovation at the end. It is available on youtube, at:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLpeK7EBncc
It will undoubtedly be one of her performance highlights of the year. Some fans said that it had all the dynamism that has been largely missing from the tour in France.
Some pictures from the program or with some of the participants, with Lara looking magnificent in all, can be found at:
www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=618187348218985&set=a.618187108219009.1073741868.126171034087288&type=1&theater
Then it was on to Toronto for the final Canadian appearance. The promo for the concert, still listed as part of the ‘Le Secret’ tour, was at:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSYvseZ5CWE&feature=youtu.be
The question ahead of time was whether Lara would make allowances for the English-speaking audience. As it turns out she did, but only in her interaction with them; the setlist inexplicably stayed true to the ‘Le Secret’ tour, which means almost all the songs were in French. This can be seen by the extracts available:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpMRROaS508#t=27
Hence Carnegie Hall was not the appropriate precedent, but rather the concerts in Quebec. She again was at the top of her form (as can be heard in the video), so the audience got to see Lara in her real element. It was apparently very well received, with the caveat that by not making greater use of her English repertoire she apparently left some dissatisfaction among audience members. One wonders what the thinking was – was she presenting herself to the rest of Canada as a Quebecois artist? It’s not as if the album is even readily available in Ontario. This approach would also imply that there will probably be no deviation for the concerts in other non-French speaking countries (Germany, Finland, etc.). If Lara is looking to build a following there, or in English speaking Canada, this would not seem to be the ideal way to go about it.
In these concerts, and even on the TV show, Lara could be noticed touching her left ear at times. She did manage to get through them all despite that, and in great voice, but this will apparently still be a topic of concern going forward. She has continued to rearrange her French schedule for the next few months, adding concerts where there is a gap in the 8 days off/3 days on prescription. Presumably she will be tested when she gets back home, to make sure it is really working.
Lara was on the radio yeserday morning , on the show “Y a pas deux matins pareils” (for some 4 ½ minutes) prior to the Toronto show, where they discussed her health issues, ‘Le Secret” and that she was ‘more Canadian than Belgian”. It can be heard (in French) at www.radio-canada.ca/emissions/Ya_pas_deux_matins_pareils/2013-2014/archives.asp?date=2014%2F01%2F13&indTime=2045&idmedia=6995308
Other than that, she was basically treated as a visiting European performer, and more publicity was given to some comments made by Neil Young about the Alberta tar sands than about Lara or her shows. The fan reaction at her concerts was likely encouraging to her, perhaps enough so that she will keep Canada in mind, although probably toward the back .
In other news, ‘Le Secret’ has dropped to 86th position in Belgium, it’s at #197 on the French charts. And if you were thinking of buying any CDs directly from Lara (e.g., EWIM), it no longer appears possible – her on-line site (larafabian.com) no longer sells CDs, as far as I can tell (and the discography is missing as well). Lara mentioned in an interview that she might consider one day selling TLFM1 on-line the way she did EWIM; given these circumstances that doesn’t seem likely.
Next week it is back to her concert tour in France, with the North American adventure and the holidays behind her. Ahead of her are more months of this same tour, apparently with her ear problem in tow. As we’ve heard, it doesn’t obviously affect her performance, so fans in the upcoming cities can look forward to Lara in great voice.
