A week in which Lara continued adjusting her future concert tour, got back into her ‘promo’ mode for ‘Le Secret’, and tried to resume a more normal existence.
In her letter to fans, Lara had mentioned that she would use the Paris concerts as a test to show her what she could and could not do…and on that basis, rearrange her schedule. She followed through on that approach this past week, first with this (translated) announcement from her staff:
--------------------------------------------------
NEWS ON LARA’s TOUR
Following the visit of Professor Azoulay Lara at November 19, she was allowed to sing (until she has completely recovered to the hearing level) three consecutive nights (at a concert a day maximum) followed by eight days without noise exposure (excluding days of air travel, which due to the pressurization equipment, involve the inner ear ).
Concerts at the Chatelet in Paris led to precisely measuring the recovery capabilities of the inner ear of Lara and thus validate the rules to apply for the following reorganization of the tour. It is on this basis that we are currently redeveloping these dates in close consultation with the local concert promoters involved. As soon as the new dates will be determined, we will communicate immediately.
It is for these reasons that we regret to cancel concerts of 5 to 8 December 2013 ((Franconville , Petite Forêt , St. Maurice and St. Menehould ) .
The new dates for the month of December for France are : Bezier 12/09/13, Marseille on 12/10/13, [note – these are the corrected dates], Toulouse on 12/11/13, the rooms are the same. For the U.S. , the date of New York is unchanged. To January 2014 in Canada dates are : 01/08/14 Quebec , Montreal on 01/09/14, (Maisonneuve room instead of the Symphony Hall), Toronto on 01/13’14. Date of Hull on 01/18/14 is permanently canceled.
We are both aware of and sorry for any inconvenience caused to fans and the public of Lara by this forced reorganization. In these circumstances as accidental as exceptional we hope to count on your understanding.
The staff.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
And that was followed the next day by another (translated) announcement:
------------------------------------------------------------------
Following the press yesterday on the tour, here is an article that will help you understand and follow the information concerning the redevelopment of the concert dates until the end of January and especially some details to answer your questions :
° What are the concerts canceled?
- Initial Date October 20, 2013 / Auxerre / Auxerrexpo
- Initial Date December 5, 2013 / Franconville / Gym
- Initial Date January 18, 2014 / Hull / Casino Theatre
Concerts from December 5 to 8 are canceled or postponed to meet the prescription (8 days off consecutive after singing 3 days, excluding air travel). Lara singing from November 27 to 29 including a trip by plane on the 30th can not ensure the concerts scheduled in the range of 5 to 8 December. She can, on the contrary, sing again after 9 December, which meets the deadline requested by her ENT between two groups of concerts.
Unfortunately, Franconville, Auxerre and Hull are among the canceled dates due to a comprehensive program for the year ahead, which does not allow the developer to propose another date for the postponed concert.
° What is the process to get the refund or change a ticket?
Concerning the practical arrangements for ticket changes and / or refund:
- Go directly to the affected rooms or via the ticketing agencies .
° What are the concerts deferred to and when? ( Other dates are also coming soon, the article will be updated as to where and when )
- 12.09/2013 Marseille / Silo
- 12/10/2013 Béziers / Zinga Zinga
- 12/11/2013 Toulouse / Zenith
- 01/08/2014 Quebec / Capitol
- 01/09/2014 Montreal / Maisonneuve
- 01/13/2013 Sony Center / Toronto
Our preference would obviously have been able to change them to the weekend, because we know that facilitates travel for many of you who work. Unfortunately we placed the dates based on free slots in the affected rooms, who organize their their events for the weekends of each month a year in advance ...
Know that we measure how these changes lead to difficulties for many of you, we are sorry and do our best to make things easier.
Thank you for your patience and understanding in these circumstances that are not easy to live through for any of us.

As might be expected, the changes did not please some of the fans… not noted in these messages was the fate of the postponed concerts earlier in November, most of which have been moved to next spring. Fans wondered why the earlier ones had been delayed by so much, while the later ones just got pushed back a few days. However as said in the message, this is not easy for Lara or her staff, who have to handle the revisions on the fly, practically at the last minute. As of this point, the concerts in ‘the countries to the east’ at the end of this month are still on schedule. Lara is doing her best in an impossible situation to try to keep fans satisfied, and keep the momentum of the tour going.
One must say, however, that all involved would appear to be skating on some potentially thin ice. It would seem as if Lara and her doctors are extrapolating into the future from very little data – from one set of concerts in Paris, over a two day period, along with measurements of how her ear reacted, they conclude that it will be o.k. for her to give three shows after 8 days of rest (airplane travel not included). It was reported that Lara’s father had mentioned to someone that hearing tests had shown improvement of 7% in one ear, and 2% in the other. Even if true, these are quite small numbers. Nevertheless, let’s hope they’re right, the improvement continues, and this schedule will really allow her to heal.
Meanwhile, Lara was featured in the media for something other than her health, at least partly because she is promoting the ‘Collector’s Edition’ of ‘Le Secret’. She was on France 3 for the program “Les chansons d’abord” [‘Songs first’], presented by Natasha St. Pier and featuring young singers. Lara was involved in four songs. Most notice has gone to her duet with Olympe on “Requiem pour un fou”, probably Lara’s most impassioned version of it since the duet with Johnny Hallyday. But her other efforts were also noteworthy, a beautiful version of ‘Je reve d’une etoile’, and some short duets on ‘J’y crois encore’ and ‘Tu es mon autre’. Videos of all of these are available on youtube, e.g.,
Requiem pour un fou: www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9PuOt0BvtM
Je reve d’une etoile: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFEaaxqUGYM
An oddity was the singing by others of a portion of ‘Tout’, which for some reason one doesn’t often hear (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgRU8s1f2BA). A more common occurrence is a cover of ‘Je t’aime’, here done quite enthusiastically (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqm7-IkG0Ik).
There was also a very musical group performance of ‘Immortelle’

Lara looked and sounded great throughout, on this program that was recorded back in October (presumably before her ear problems had fully surfaced). If anyone had any doubts about the current importance of Lara to the French music scene, this show implicitly and explicitly answered them.
Lara was in Cine-Tele-Review, in which she discussed what we already know about her situation and the solution, with the same dire warnings if she didn’t take corrective action. (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=585500751503593&set=a.402343953152608.90759.166959643357708&type=1&theater)
In contrast, she was on RTL radio yesterday on the program “Des Grosses Têtes” (http://www.rtl.fr/emission/les-grosses-tetes/ecouter/l-invite-d-honneur-lara-fabian-7767276257). While she starting by talking about her ailment and how alterations in her tour were necessitated by it, this show, unlike other recent programs, had an irreverent air, helped by Lara treating her situation in a more matter-of-fact manner – and that presumably due at least in part to her feeling that things are now more under control. The show then wandered into numerous other areas: how her separation from Gerard was noted first on her FB page, her recent marriage, the use of Onsei-Do for healing, etc. She also discussed her experiences in Russia, including meeting the ‘first lady’, and the origin of Lara’s name…In other words, back to normal.
She also recorded a radio program #VIPRFM which will be broadcast on December 20 on RFM. Several pictures of her at the event can be seen at:

It is fair to say, as some fans are, that all these promotion events (like the previous ones in the spring) are for Lara herself, and not really for the songs on ‘Le Secret’ – the one title from it that she sang on “Les chansons d’abord” isn’t even a released single. Nevertheless, the publicity and the album’s re-release does seem to be working – ‘Le Secret’ has bounced back up to 60th on the French charts, and to 25th in Belgium. Hopefully that too will help Lara’s healing!
Not all was sweetness and light for her, however. Julian Piraud, who has a long history with Lara’s work, reviewed one of her recent concerts in Paris in Ptitblog (http://www.ptitblog.net/Lara-Fabian/lara-fabian-un-spectacle-en-demi-teinte-au-chatelet_art10257.html). He credited Lara for appearing despite her problems, and acknowledged that she was in excellent voice; nevertheless, he felt that overall the show was lackluster. His main issues were that the (1) décor is almost non-existent, the staging is messy, the approach to songs is inconsistent – in other words, it is not up to the professional level that one expects from Lara. And (2) that Lara’s performance was mechanical, lacking both spontaneity and conviction. He contrasts it with shows back in 2000 that Lara performed when the audience first heard ‘I Will Love Again’ (which ended this show) – when “Lara was not afraid of anything, and left all of herself on stage”. His comments provoked numerous replies, some in favor and some against. One can judge for oneself (either from concerts seen on this tour, or from the videos), but two points should be considered: Lara no longer has the help of Gerard Pullicino, who made the appearance of her last several tours so unique; and she has gone through a lot in the last 13 years, challenges that have dispelled the illusion of the invulnerability of youth. And they are continuing still.
And speaking of vulnerability: Lara is due to be in Latvia later this month, where a few days ago the roof of a supermarket collapsed, with at least 55 fatalities. Lara expressed her sympathy on her FB site, writing, “Latvia my heart is with you. May your pain find healing and support I send you all my strength and love...” She provided a picture of a beautiful glowing heart at:

Continuing with this vulnerability theme, Lara called attention on her FB site to the auction of dolls for UNICEF, with the following (translated) statement and picture:
----------------------------------------
Dear all, I invite you to discover tomorrow and until 1 December the exposition of the magnificent ‘Little faces’ of designers for UNICEF at the Petit Palais ... These dolls are a reflection of hope for thousands of children ... I myself would have the good fortune to discover a preview tonight ...

showed how she was trying to put her life back on track:

A long and healthy life to Lou (and to her mother)!
Coming up: Next week, Lara will be a guest on "50 Minutes Inside" on TF1, to be broadcast on November 30. By that time she will have given her three upcoming concerts, in Kaliningrad on the 27th, Riga on the 28th and Belarus the 29th. Hopefully, her expectation that with the requisite rest she can do this will be proven correct.

Although it was overlooked here at the time, last Tuesday was Lou’s sixth birthday. The ‘Lara Fabian Is Here’ website posted a nice birthday card for her, available at:

A long and healthy life to Lou (and to her mother)!
Coming up: Next week, Lara will be a guest on "50 Minutes Inside" on TF1, to be broadcast on November 30. By that time she will have given her three upcoming concerts, in Kaliningrad on the 27th, Riga on the 28th and Belarus the 29th. Hopefully, her expectation that with the requisite rest she can do this will be proven correct.
