"Open Letter to Lara’s Fans"
by Rob Mancuso, Lara's sound engineer
In the last few days I have been bombarded with questions about what happened to Lara and if it was serious. There seems to be some confusion. I will attempt to explain as simply as possible the gravity of her situation.
In May, while she was rehearsing for a TV show, a technician accidentally sent a 1khz tone directly into her ear monitors (ear monitors are custom moulded to a person’s ear canals and the opening is only a few millimetres from the ear drum).
This 1khz tone was sent so loudly and quickly into her ear monitors that it felt like a gun being fired beside each ear. The sound pressure level (Volume) of this tone was strong enough to knock her off balance making her fall down. Imagine hearing a sound loud enough to make you fall down!
This event obviously injured her hearing and she had to be sent to the emergency room.
In september, when she started touring, the volume required in her ear monitors, just made the situation worse because the healing had not completed. On top of that, since the ears are injured, any kind of shock to them creates liquid accumulation in the inner ear which, in turn, makes her more susceptible to ear infections. The infections make things worse. It becomes a vicious circle...
One sad side effect of all of this is that the hearing loss that she is experiencing at the moment makes her unable to hear certain harmonics in her voice. A harmonic is what gives each singer their particular vocal texture. When different singers sing the same note, you can tell which singer is which because, while they all sing the same note, they all have their own particular texture or color. This color is actually the harmonics present in a voice.
Lara’s inability to hear certain harmonics in her voice makes her voice UNRECOGNIZABLE to her. Basically, while she sounds great to anyone who listens to her, her voice does not sound like her voice to her. She has lost all reference to her instrument.
This makes being able to control her vocal texture and pitch very very difficult. It’s like a painter no longer being able to see certain colours and having to guess which one is blue. This is why she says she hears two different voices when she talks or sings. She no longer has a clear reference point.
This situation is scary for anyone to live through. It’s only made worse if someone has to live through it every night in front of thousands of people. Both the performer and the audience deserve better than this.
She has NO CHOICE but to follow her doctor’s orders so that she stops this vicious circle and recovers her hearing before the problem become IRREVERSIBLE.
There you have it. I hope this clears things up.
