Health issues erupted for Lara mid-way through her latest tour segment in France this past week. The concerts started routinely enough, with shows in Saint-Claude on the 17th, and Sausheim on the 18th. On the 19th in Chevgny Saint Sauveur, the evening was first delayed by technical problems related to the portions of the ‘Le Secret’ music that is on tape. After that, part way through her show the audience noticed Lara was touching her headset. After 90 minutes, she stopped the show, telling the audience that the high frequencies were irritating her ear, that she was not “une chanteuse mais une ‘chianteuse’” (not a singer but an ‘annoyed singer’). Instead, she decided to abandon the normal set, dropping songs such as ‘Mirage’, ‘Immortelle’, ‘Putain de grand amour’ and ‘I am A-Wa’. She switched to two acoustic songs – a duet with her husband (more on that below), and ‘Pas sans toi’. And that was it.
At that point, it was unclear whether it had been a continuation of the earlier technical problems that forced the change. However, that was followed by a (translated, as are all of them) message on her Instagram site (
--------------------------------------------------------
Dear all ... I'm totally sorry Auxerre is canceled ..... my inner ear let go last night during the concert and I have to go to hospital emergency... I'll let you know .. please accept my apologies.... fallible machines these human bodies .... I send you all my love ... L

and on her FB site:

Hello everyone,
How sad I can not go to Auxerre ... the concern yesterday was well beyond a technical problem ... I go to the hospital right now ... for a serious concern to the inner ear ... I'll let you know ...
apologies
Lara
-------------------------------
The show Lara cancelled in Auxere, France was scheduled for the 20th, no great surprise to those who had attended the previous night. Fans of course are getting a refund.
It got worse. On Sunday, Lara put the following message on her Instagram site (
-------------------------------
Thank you all for your messages of love ... I'll have to rest intensely for at least 10 days ... my inner ear is affected seriously enough ... from the shock of 1000 Hz collected on a TV stage before summer I kept a fragility subjected to repeated sound stress that causes me a recurring problem .... I have to be very careful in the future ... At each test a great lesson .... I try to stay confident ... Soon my angels ...
------------------------------
If you remember, the problem initially arose when a technician had the volume up too high on Lara’s headset during a rehearsal for a TV show on which Lara was supposed to appear for one of ‘Le Secret’ promos. She then skipped that show, but did go to another one, where she was complimented for honoring that commitment. We had not heard subsequently that it was still a problem, and she had 14 concerts without obvious issue, but apparently the repeated sonic stress caused a breakdown.
Taken literally, Lara’s statement would imply that she would also have to cancel at least her concerts in Uzbekistan and the two in St. Petersburg. However, Lara’s FB tried to downplay that interpretation, with a message reading “"The best 'Ear Nose and Throat' specialists are taking care of Lara. The problem is serious, but she should be OK in a few days. Thank you for all your support messages, she's very touched by them!" This morning the FB site pointedly advertised the St. Petersburg concerts, in what seemed like an attempt to both reassure fans there and also in France. And then, just a short time ago (as of the time of this writing), Lara put the following message on her Instagram site (
-------------------------------------
Dear all, I wanted to give you a little of my news ... for now it will go quite slowly ... I will do my best this week to rest up to the maximum and to follow the treatment to the letter in order to to be able to ensure my concerts to come ... For the moment, no cancellation is scheduled ... To return to the road is my greatest wish ... I'll do anything for it... Thank you for your countless messages of love ... See you soon .... lara

Note that the coming concerts, including the two in Moscow, would of course require airplane flights, something that is not recommended for people with inner ear problems. Perhaps they have determined that the problem is simply exacerbated by loud sounds, and the solution is just to avoid them…
In that regard, fans have suggested that rather than cancelling all of these shows, she should just plug up the injured ear, and use the headset for the other ear – there are singers who are deaf in one ear and do just fine with that approach. If Lara does go through with her Asian tour, she might be considering that – or she could just simply convert all of the coming shows to ‘acoustic’ concerts where she doesn’t need to use headphones to hear above the instrumentation. It would be a disappointment for those venues not to get to hear the new ‘Le Secret’ material; but the album hasn’t been released there anyway, and it would allow her to avoid issues concerning her singing ‘Deux ils, deux elles’ in Russia. In that sense, this might turn out to be a silver lining…
As another ‘silver lining’, we did get a chance to hear Lara’s two acoustic substitutions. In particular, as noted above, Lara performed an on-the-spot duet with her husband Gabriel of the song ‘Don’t Give Up’ (which is very relevant to Lara’s situation), available at:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_GMfN2DN30
We didn’t know that he could sing (but one wouldn’t overstate that…). In addition we heard her singing ‘Pas sans toi’, which is not part of the tour. A video can be found at:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=JP4kWtLmAxM
[We’ll also see whether this publicity has any impact on Lara’s sales position, with ‘Le Secret’ down to 127th in Belgium, and still off the French charts. All the major entertainment publications have picked up the story, i.e., Gala, purepeople, etc.].
It turns out, this was not the only news this past week concerning Lara’s health. Her TV appearance in Canada on the show ‘Acces’ Illimite’ aired this past week, and the Lara Fabian Romanian site quickly posted the two parts with English subtitles. They can be found at:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=w--PNFbsrcQ
and
www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ErVPNckD6c
While there were many interesting aspects to this interview, which continued Lara’s habit of speaking much more openly to the Canadian media than she does in Europe, the issues involving her health seemed to resonate, especially considering recent developments. She noted that she still has problems with not eating sufficiently, and that when in the depths of anorexia (down to ~100 pounds), she had so starved her body that she suffered a heart attack. The observation that she looks thin on this tour reemphasizes the issue. The program also illustrated how insecure Lara can be about her performances. Neither of these aspects is related to her recent ear problem, but all together they serve to remind us that Lara is fragile, both physically and psychologically – a point she herself makes in the recent article in ‘Feminine Psycho’, in which she also offers up the solution as put forth in the album ‘Le Secret’, to look inside oneself to find the necessary strength and happiness. Scans of that complete article are available at:

All of this emphasizes once again that we should appreciate what Lara provides us, and not take it for granted! Let’s hope all of these problems are handled with the proper caution, and recede as issues of concern.
Concerning the concerts that were given, some photos are available from Saint Claude, at:

and at:

In Sausheim, two sheets of paper were placed on each of the 850 seats, by ‘Nath (Nathalie) of Alsace’. One was a picture of a heart, the other the lyrics to ‘Je t’aime’. Along with it was a note that read: “For the first time in Eden, we are pleased to receive Lara Fabian. On this occasion, and for a wonderful celebration, we invite you to participate in a surprise". At a specific moment, the fans all stood up and raised the heart to show Lara. Photos from this show are available at:

In other news – admittedly of much lesser near-term import – Jeremy Ch on the MZ FB site provided some information on what will be on the DVD that is accompanying Lara’s upcoming ‘Collector’s edition’ release of ‘Le Secret’. He indicated that there will be four chapters.
Chapter 1 will be behind the scenes of Le Secret: the recording of ‘Danse’, ‘Je reve d’une etoile’ and ‘I Am A-wa’, the trailer for ‘Le Secret’, the launch concert at the Paris theatre, and the first images of ‘Le Secret’.
Chapter 2 will have the three clips, the two versions of ‘Deux ils, deux elles’, and the one of ‘Danse’.
Chapter 3 will have the bonus concert for Lebanon, from last February 14.
Chapter 4 will have two audio tracks, the remix of ‘Deux ils, deux elles’ and ‘Always’.
Much of this material is already available, and Chapter 3 is not even related to ‘Le Secret’, but it is nice to have everything in DVD quality. Apparently it is more complicated than expected to get it all together, as the release has now been pushed back by up to a month. FNAC says it will be available November 11, while Amazon.fr says it is now expected November 23-26; it wouldn’t be a surprise if it were to slip even further.
Claire Evelyne Dauge has placed on her FB site, and also on dailymotion.com, a promo for Lara on ‘Plus vite que la musique' from the 17th. It featured segments of the ‘Danse’ video, and can be seen at:

Last Wednesday, Lara recorded the program "Les chansons d'abord", to be broadcast on November 24 on France 3. It was reported that she sings a duet of "Requiem pour un fou" in duo with Olympe, and ‘Je reve d’une etoile’ (rather than ‘Danse’). A picture of the rehearsal can be found at:

This and photos of other ‘couples’ will be on display at Place de la République, November 29 – December 10.
Finally, the Lara Fabian Romanian site posted a link to a beautiful dance rendition to ‘Deux ils, deux elles’ by the dance school ‘ArtisticDance’. It can be seen at:

By next week it will be clear whether Lara’s problem is manageable in the short term, or whether it will seriously impact her tour schedule. Let’s hope for the best - sending an encouraging message to her FB site, or even just ‘positive thoughts' can’t do any harm!
