Lara’s two TV appearances took precedence this past week. We’ll start with the one in which she actually performed musically, the New Wave festival in Latvia.
Lara returned from her Indonesian honeymoon and immediately headed to this ‘country to the east’ for what is her sixth performance at Igor Krutoy’s festival. Here young singers are introduced in competition (won this time by Ukrainians), while both western and Russian artists are featured performers. She is always happy to support up and coming singers, and of course, Krutoy. In the past she has used her appearances to introduce new songs created with Krutoy (e.g., ‘Demain n’existe pas’ a few years ago), and that continued this time, with two titles, “Yin and Yang” and “Angels Pass Away”. The two songs are available individually on the web, or, in the video of her complete appearance, at:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXjlNhmXRQI
As explained by Daina on ‘Lara Fabian Romania’, ‘Angels Pass Away’ was music written by Krutoy, with Lara providing the lyrics, for the Korean singer Sumi Jo, who presented it at the 2011 Winter Asian Games. [You may remember that was the event at which Lara presented what was in effect the companion song by the same songwriting team, ‘Always’]. It was also explained that Sumi Jo included it on her 2012 CD “La Luce: Sings Igor Krutoy”. A complete video of Sumi Jo’s wonderful singing of it is available at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=gH8U3MuQuAw
And the song from her CD is available at: webfile.ru/6622614 [click the right hand green box for downloads].
Lara’s presenting it here suggested it will also be on her next album with Krutoy.
Although the song is in English, as usual with Lara some words are hard to understand; nevertheless, here are the approximate lyrics (aided by Sumi Jo’s version, which isn’t exactly the same, but probably represents the actual written words).
-------------------------------------------------------
Angels Pass Away
(Krutoy and Fabian)
In the haze
Out of phase
We deny
Our fates
Lost in space
Faceless race
We become insane
We cause most the pain
Most our hearts are vain
[Refrain]
Angels pass away
When we kill their pride (?)
Now the time has come
To save our own lives
And abandon every fight
Love and grace will save the day
Let’s just pray
We haven’t come too late
Now the time has come
To save the children’s earth
Wake up with a stronger faith
Night won’t chase the light of day
Away
Dry your tears
Now you know
You are on the path
Share the word
And be heard
Through this world
Of grace
Understand the sky
Who’s crying every time
Refrain
------------------------------------------
Daina also provided the information that “during the song you can see a picture of a man on the big screen, to whom Lara dedicates this performance. It is Mr. Konstantin Sedov, Russian economist and representative of the Government, the Deputy Governor of the Moscow region. Konstantin Sedov died November 29, 2012. He had been a close friend of Mr. Igor Krutoy and had greatly contributed to the creation of the "New Wave" festival.” The woman in the audience whom the cameras continually turned to, and whom Lara and Igor handed flowers to after the show, was Sedov’s mother (http://www.express-novosti.ru/get/31336/).
As for the other song, the French ‘Yin and Yang’, it suggests that once again the new album with Krutoy will be multi-lingual. Here is a translation of, again, the approximate lyrics (thanks to Karen Tegny and Geo Faucon on the MZ FB site for the French version):
------------------------------------------------------------
Yin and Yang
(Krutoy and Fabian)
From one love to another
One makes amends
From one love to another
One discovers oneself
From one love to another
One approaches the mirror
The one that doesn’t tell the story
[Refrain]
Yin and Yang
Who are we when one is bewitched
By a vital love
Intoxicating
For what poor shadow
Let us fall
To betray oneself
From a mixture of sugar and mint
But how to split
Without mixing
To keep our secrets
So as to better understand oneself
From one love to another
One is no longer the apostle
From wandering passions
Fires to revive
From one love to another
One understands the art of love
It is better to learn to garden
[Refrain]
[Refrain]
---------------------------------------------------------
If you have any suggestions for improvements to the lyrics of either song, please let us know.
Both songs are very well sung, and, apparently, actually sung live, perhaps a sign of Lara’s increasing confidence in her old way of singing. They are also both quite enjoyable – and perhaps commercial - but quite different from the originality/modernity that the music on ‘Le Secret’ possesses. Krutoy has said that the next album will be very different from ‘Madmoiselle Zhivago’; we will have to hear more of the songs to know how true that is. So far they seem fairly similar, especially to the version of MZ that Lara released in France. It is still a question whether this next ‘Krutoy’ album will be released in that country.
Also of obvious note is Lara’s appearance, particularly her hair color, hair style, and lack of makeup. It is a more sophisticated, middle-aged look, and was taken note of by the French press, with some wonderful pictures at:
www.public.fr/News/Photos/Photos-Lara-Fabian-elle-devoile-tout-son-glamour-lors-du-New-Wave-International-Festival-430520
These are in sharp contrast with her (simultaneous) appearance on ‘The Best’, discussed below (which was filmed almost two months ago). In some sense, the appearance matched the music of the songs. It will be interesting to see which look she favors for the upcoming concert tour.
On leaving the show, Lara was given a gift by a fan (Sergey) of a microphone reportedly worth 10,000 euros! He explained that he loved Lara and her music.
Lara gave an interview for the show; an audible version of it (in English) can be found at:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rqxkXSchvE&feature=youtu.be
Interestingly, when asked at the end what were the three most important things in her life right now, she answered “my daughter” for all three. New husband…?
Lara has since noted that she has come back from Latvia, thanked the fans for their continuing support, and posted another photo on her Instagram page,
Back in France, Lara’s participation as a judge on the TF1 show ‘The Best, le meilleur artiste’ had been heavily advertised by the station in an attempt to draw in viewers.
A beautiful photo of Lara taken for an interview beforehand is available at:

and Lara on the show itself:

The show’s producers banked on Lara being a vocal, emotional, controversial panelist, and as far as the reports are concerned, they got their money’s worth. Lara’s was moved to tears seeing the two children dance (‘Tayluer and Jack’), and was radiant throughout. Pictures of the various performers are available on the show’s website, at:
www.facebook.com/TheBestTF1?directed_target_id=0
While the show has been blocked for sites outside of France on TF1’s official channel, except for the beginning at:

the full show can be seen at:
www.larafabianbrasil.com.br/2013/07/assista-ao-1-programa-completo-do-best.html
or, ignoring the commercials at the beginning, in a somewhat smaller download size at:

The program’s interview with Lara, with English subtitles, can be seen at:
www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=94s2wo7X-Wg
The audience of 4.1 million people was not outstanding – it is summertime, after all - but certainly enough to justify Lara’s participation. In ‘Tweets’, the show ranked number 1 in France for 85 minutes, and second overall for the week. Lara’s ‘Tweet’ page ranked as high as 6th for 30 minutes. The response of the audience, as noted by the ‘Tweets’ was as expected: both extremes, with some fans feeling Lara was properly emotive, and others feeling she was ‘over the top’. There were those who thought Lara was very pretty and very nice, and others who disliked and insulted her; it must be said that there were many negative ones on the program site. One can’t help but wonder that if she is aware of that, she must have felt quite a contrast between her French reception, and that in Latvia. Perhaps that’s why she thanked her true fans when she returned.
As for the show itself, some critics (e.g., leplus.nouvelobs.com/contribution/913667-the-best-le-meilleur-artiste-sur-tf1-alors-c-est-ca-le-meilleur-vraiment.html) found that it was too sanitized, polished, ‘made for children with no spice’, and that the judges were searching for synonyms for all the praise they were heaping on the contestants. It was also noted that Lara did not really have the expertise to judge acrobatics.
In other news, “Le Secret’ did not drop off the French charts last week, rebounding back to #182 (#37 in Belgium), perhaps due to the show’s promo even before her appearance on French TV. Given that she will be there every Friday through August 23 (for which an audience is being requested: casting-events.com/index.php?vue=emission&id=66) we’ll see if it has staying power.
Nicolas Boucaud on the MZ FB site has been looking at Lara’s performance on iTunes around the world (http://kworb.net/itunes/larafabian.html), and noted some interesting anomalies. Apparently in Tajikistan, ‘Je t’aime encore’ is #1, and ‘Vocalize’ is #2, while her first English album is still listed in some countries. She should thus definitely release ‘Le Secret’ in Tajikistan!
A fan has heard on the radio that ‘Un ange est tombe’ is to be the next single from the album. This was one of the leading fan vote getters, and with its upbeat rhythm (although somewhat downbeat theme) seems an appropriate choice. We’ll see fairly soon how true that is, scheduled in some reports for a mid-August release.
Much is being made of the cover of Lady Gaga’s new album, as copying Lara. The brief article, visible at: www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151556745359716&set=a.10150582678919716.382622.84874629715&type=1&theater , says:
“Cat eyes, blond Venetian hair, translucent skin and cover of album on which she is completely naked, as did Lara Fabian in 2001 .... And if Lady Gaga was inspired by the most French of Belgian singers for 'Artpop' her new album, which is to be released in November?”
Actually, the more direct comparison is Lara’s recent photo shoot; a montage comparison of the two was prepared by Clothilde Berruet on the LFIAG FB site, and can be seen at:
www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151553833084716&set=a.84883359715.83398.84874629715&type=1&theater
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but one wonders if Lady Gaga really was copying Lara, and if so, whether she was aware that it would be ‘outed’.
Coming up for Lara are the next four weeks of ‘The Best’, likely with more Tweets, more controversy, and hopefully, more album sales!
