Lara had a very busy week, jumping right into the middle of the debate concerning gay marriage that is currently taking place in France. For those not familiar with the issue, here is a report from the NY Times:
------------------------------------------------------------
About 125,000 people in Paris marched to support a same-sex marriage bill that stands a good chance of becoming law this year, with the backing of the president.
Two weeks ago, a rally by those opposed to the proposal drew what the police said were 340,000 people into the streets of Paris.
François Hollande, the Socialist president, promised during his campaign to legalize gay marriage within a year of taking office in May 2012. And with effective majorities in both houses of Parliament, Mr. Hollande and his government should be able to beat back various efforts by opponents to kill or amend the bill. It has been suggested that even given the long legislative process, the bill could become law as early as May.
The draft law redefines marriage to stipulate that it is “contracted between two persons of different sex or of the same sex,” and the words “father and “mother” in existing legislation are replaced by “parents.” The bill also would allow married same-sex couples to adopt children.
The French, who are taught that every citizen has equal rights regardless of differences, generally support providing the same rights to gay and lesbian couples that are available to straight ones. According to the most recent poll by the French Institute of Public Opinion, which was released on Saturday, some 63 percent are in favor of same-sex marriage, and 49 percent favor the right of same-sex married couples to adopt.

Prior to the event, Lara released the following message on her FB site:
-----------------------------------------
Dear all,
I am pleased to be the theater of tomorrow roundabout affected by this invitation and I thank allparticularly Mr. Pierre Bergé ..
Be present at this event supporting beliefs that I believe for a long time is a privilege ...
Because I have gay friends around me, both from my family that my professional colleagues, because I have fans who can now also feel bruised by the events of recent weeks, mostly because I think most of all in love, sharing and the union ..
I sing the first single from my album ‘Deux ils, deux elles’, here is the text (given below)...
From the heart
Lara
-----------------------------------------------------------------
So in conjunction with both fashion week, and activities to promote research into AIDS relief, Lara attended a dinner on Friday, was interviewed on TV, and, as Ocelot presented in a separate thread, sang a new song, the first to be released from Le Secret, at a dinner Sunday following the ‘Marriage for All’ march. Her song, “Deux ‘ils’, deux ‘elles”, was right in line with the theme of the moment, and can be viewed as a sort of ‘follow up’ to ‘La Difference’ from 1997. An English translation of the lyrics is presented below:
Two (of) them (men), two (of) them (women) [homonyms for ‘two islands, two wings’]
(Fabian and Compagnon)
Like a winter sky gives way to its clear nights
As a great thunder dies as soon as it resonates ...
As a clear spring opens to the sea and then merges with it
Like a piece of flesh makes of us human....
when two "they (men)" touch each other
all our senses remember
what a kiss makes
of 2 beings
two souls bound almost eternal ...
when 2 ‘they (women)” touch each other
everything in us wakes up…
To the evidence that Love
this time makes all the difference ...
As inseparable are roots and huge trees
When winds and storms mock and persist
The caravan goes by, barking the dogs of war tire
The secrets are rendered up and hatred moves on...
When two "they(men)" touch
all our senses remember
what a kiss makes
of 2 beings
two souls bound almost eternal ...
when 2 "they (women)" touch
everything in us wakes up…
To the evidence that Love
this time makes all the difference ...
Soul mates are immortal
regardless of
man or woman ...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Notice the clever play-off with ‘La Difference’, where that song ends by claiming there is no ‘difference’ (between homosexual and heterosexual love), while this one says there is now a difference in perception (Love being more important than gender questions). Similarly, ‘Je t’aime encore’ had obvious references to ‘Je t’aime. Lara could make this a cottage industry, new songs as ‘follow-ups’ to the ones with Rick Allison . BTW, the translation is possible because Lara, desiring to emphasize its meaning, released the French lyrics (something she never did for any of the Mlle. Zhivago songs...).
Concerning the timing, Lara couldn’t have put herself in a better position – topical, up front in a popular cause, far removed from the (false) stereotype of someone who cares only for herself. It was the best possible opportunity for her to introduce her new album to the French public, and she made the most of it. And because of ‘La Difference’, she has credibility – this is not some ‘Joni come lately’ jumping onto the bandwagon.
[Actually, forgotten is the fact that when the issue last surfaced several years ago, visa vi the question of whether gays should be allowed to adopt, Lara refused to sign the petition. She said that while she recognized gay/lesbian couples had a lot of love to give, and so was drawn to their cause, she fundamentally believed that a child was better off with both a male and a female in its life. And while she hasn’t specifically contradicted that position – as far as I can tell, she’s only spoken about the rights of the LGBT community to marry – included in the bill is the right for them to adopt. It’s possible her views have ‘evolved’ (like Obama’s)].
As for the song itself, it is moving and melodic, and grows on the listener the more one hears it. And, again, certainly topical. Fans seemed to like it, and the on-line press believes that it is the first single from the album (e.g., starsblog.fr/2013/01/28/lara-fabian-son-nouveau-single-deux-ils-deux-elles/). Presumably it is… One wonders if this had been her first choice all along, or if, recognizing the moment, she decided to release it in conjunction with the march. Perhaps her refusal to present the first single on the ‘Celebration of French song’ TV show earlier in the month was really a desire to maximize its impact by presenting it now. Regardless, this gentle song (Lara’s words) should not alienate the French critics, and may smooth the passage for the subsequent album release.
But we have now heard two songs from the new album, the first (almost certainly) being ‘Le Secret’ (if you’ve forgotten it, you can see her performance, with English subtitles, at www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zX_rNGw-A8). The songs are similar – important topics, somewhat subdued and serious. In no way do they represent what we’ve been told the album will feature: powerful singing and rock music/movie music. Either the album has been mis-characterized by ‘Le Parisien’ in their interview with Lara, or it contains a wide spectrum of songs/moods. Which wouldn’t be a bad thing, if it can somehow all be pulled together into a coherent album.

Finally, various videos from the “mariage pour tous” event are available on ‘Daily Motion’,
www.dailymotion.com/mariagepourtous
In one of the interviews connected with this event (by Maxime Maheux on 1-27), Lara was asked whether there would be anything done to ‘showcase’ the new album before or after its scheduled April release. Lara replied “Yes, there will be one (a showcase) the day of the album’s release. [More news] to follow…” We will see what that means. Remember the last time she rented a hall to present a new album it was for the first version of TLFM, which never saw the light of day due to Universal’s rejection of it. She doesn’t have that worry now, as she is the one releasing ‘Le Secret’. Coincidentally, another thing the new song, at least, has in common with those heard at the TLFM (first version) showcase is the low-keyed singing. Then it generated a good deal of controversy; here, people are willing to wait for the full album. There is one thing that we know for sure will appear in conjunction with the new album: Lara recorded an interview with Hebdo Mag Musique for France 2, which will be shown on April 20th. A preview of that interview, with subtitles, is available from Youtube Hebdo Mag Musique, thanks to Lara Fabian Brazil. It can be seen at:
larafabianbrasil.blogspot.com/2013/01/video-trecho-da-entrevista-de-lara.html
Concerning the ‘world wide’ tour, Lara indicated that she is positive on a return to Tunisia and Lebanon, despite the problems encountered last year. It’s also been stated that a concert in Canada will take place. None of these locales has been verified; in fact, Lara’s people put a message on her site indicating people should have patience, the tour is not yet available for listing.
In other news, apparently Lara will be on the French version of “The Voice 2”, on TF1, March 2 and 9th alongside Florent Pagny, as suggested last week.

Good luck to them.
