Intentionally or not, Lara has opened her promo for the French public by answering the question, “What I did during my 7 years away…) (not that she has really been away for that time…). The answer? Russia!
Lara started 2013 with a jump into the French media, leading with her Russian ‘fairytale’. The highlight was a clip on French TV M6 about her experiences in Russia, how she has become a big star there. It included fans gushing over her, and many indications of her popularity with that audience. The video is available on youtube, and the Romanian fanclub has put English subtitles on it, available at:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=emMxdT0wrRg
There was also a short report on TV France 2 about her success in Russia (and the ‘countries to the east’), indicating she had sold some 400,000 albums there. [And Lara is not finished there, even this year – she has announced a new concert in Irkutsk, a reprieve of her ‘Best of’’ tour, for March 6, 2013].
And ozap.com carried a report and article from Le Parisian about Lara and Russia. The translated version was produced by ‘Lara Fabian Is Here’, and is copied below, with some corrections:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The incredible success of Lara Fabian ... Russia!
"Le Parisien" now devotes a whole page to Lara Fabian and her incredible success in Russia, while the singer is struggling to return to the front of the stage in France.
“Toutâ€, “Je t’aimeand "Immortelle", "Tue es mon autre", "La Lettre" ... In the 90s and 2000s, Lara Fabian has accumulated successes, both with singles or albums. But since the semi-failure of her covers album, "Tout la femme en moi" in 2009, the singer is scarce on the French music scene. However, she has not stopped giving voice, far away since Lara is a huge success ... Russia!
800,000 copies of "Mademoiselle Zhivago"
Indeed, while many artists say that they are selling tens of thousands of records abroad, Le Parisien / Today in France now devotes a full page to Lara Fabian and her success abroad. For it is indeed real. A few months ago, the singer has reclaimed her greatest success with the help of musician and producer Igor Krutoy, the album "Mademoiselle Zhivago".
An album that received only a very confidential output in Carrefour stores in France but has pulled in 400,000 copies in Russia. A success that surpassed the borders as a total in all countries of the East, "Mademoiselle Zhivago" has sold 800,000 copies. Lara Fabian and madness also takes place on the stage, the artist who gave 60 concerts since 2008, "including one in Astana, Kazakhstan, during the opening ceremony of the Asian Winter Games in 2011.
"I spend six months a year"
Lara Fabian is not ready to leave Russia: 25 concerts announced for 2013 with three dates in the Kremlin. "The Russians love her for her beauty, her voice, of course, but also because they share with her a certain lyricism and emotion. Her song 'Je t’aimeâ€' is in all karaoke bars in Moscow. It is part of our culture, "says Vadim Takmenev, host of public Russian NTV channel.
In turn, Lara Fabian assures Le Parisien, the party in Russia is not due to a lack of success in France. "Artists do not go in the countries of the East because they do not have success in France. We did not implement it like that. One should first be asked and be patient, invest time of energy. Since 2008, I spent six months a year and I sing wherever I am asked, to the depths of Siberia "she says.
"I found my voice"
Success in Russia has also re-motivated Lara Fabian. "It gave me confidence, I found my voice, I work again," said the one who had changed their way of singing because of "criticism." However, do not forget Lara Fabian in France as she will release a new album, "Le Secret", in April 2013. "I am very excited to return to France to sing" she assures. Prior to that, the singer will assist Florent Pagny will in battles of "The Voice" on TF1."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One can be sure Lara is very happy with these presentations, but it does raise some conflicting questions concerning her French audience and the view the French public should have about her.
On the one hand, they have to be impressed with the magnitude of her success, the enthusiasm of her fans there, the fact that she can sell out the Kremlin 6000 seat arena several nights in a row. And it is the first time we’ve gotten numbers on the sales of the MZ CD – a big hit indeed [Charts in France carried this article, and even they were impressed with those sales figures ]. Also, it fills in the gap in her ‘resume’ – explains what she has been doing since the latter part of the 2000s when she wasn’t as evident in France. Becoming a big hit elsewhere is the next best thing to being a big hit at home. And the fact that it is a French singer who is winning over the Russian speaking population is a source of pride.
On the other hand, there is the implication that she went to Russia only because her French career had dried up, although Lara has tried hard to debunk it. Or that it was an escape: on the canoe.ca website (Canada, yet!), there is an article with the (translated) headline “Lara exiles herself in Russia to evade mockeryâ€. She also risks alienating her French fans, who believe (rightly) that her activity there deprives them of access to her in France. And success in Russia isn’t exactly the same as, say, success in the U.S. Despite the French decrying the lowering of standards necessary to be successful in the States, it does garner a great deal of respect (and airplay!). Russia, and the ‘countries to the east’, are not in that category. Even other countries in Western Europe would probably be valued more highly (I’m not saying this is correct; Lara’s quality is so high that the fact that Russians adore her makes me think more highly of them!). The French public may conclude, well, let her stay there…
At the end of the program, the announcer indicated that Lara will be going on a 100 city tour, including New York! It makes sense, but it would make even more sense if she had some record to release world-wide (including the U.S.). Perhaps Mademoiselle Zhivago will see some new locales , although how that is to be managed in conjunction with the release of ‘Le Secret’ is hard to fathom. A worldwide release for the MZ album would presumably require a record company with ‘legs’ (like her old company, Universal, had). Premature, obviously, but something to hope for! Lara has indicated that she will soon provide a complete listing of her concerts (still some 9 months away).
The article above said she had 25 more concerts scheduled for Russia in 2013, and these will presumably be part of the tour. For those venues it would be useful if some (or all) of the work being done with Igor Krutoi on her ‘follow-up’ to Mlle. Zhivago were to be ready. Not impossible, given that ‘Le Secret’ is just about done. And that would also function as a 'world-wide' release, given its likely mix of languages. Again, premature and probably unlikely in 2013 at least; but since the concert series extends into 2014, maybe the new international album will be ready by then.
Actually, except for a brief comment in the article, the album ‘Le Secret’, wasn’t mentioned much in these media events, so as a promo it was not very effective. But it does get her name in the news for a successful venture at a time when she can use every bit of public recognition and remembrance.
In addition, the song ‘Le Secret’ (which one might think could be the single to be released in January) is getting a life of its own. An article in ‘Le Parisien’ notes that it will in the soundtrack of the French version of the movie the ‘Evil Dead’, The promo for the film can be found at:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvDLWlxxcak&feature=youtu.be&oref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DpvDLWlxxcak%26feature%3Dyoutu.be&has_verified=1
As can be seen, this is a ‘blood and guts’ movie. How does this comply with Lara’s desire not to be associated with a film filled with negative images and concepts? Could Badoev’s film of Mlle. Zhivago be any worse in that regard? (Maybe the difference is that ‘Evil Dead’ probably ends happily – it is a US film, after all – while Badoev’s segments probably did not - Russian-Ukrainian film.
Back in France, it was announced that on January 10th, Lara will be on a show “Hier Encore†dedicated to Charles Aznavour,. No word on what she is going to sing, but a good choice would be ‘Comme ils disent’, which she has done many times. On the 11th she will appear on France 3 joining a host of other stars celebrating French song. She is scheduled to sing a song from ‘Le Secret’, according to a report attributed to Daniela Lumbroso, the host (which will then almost certainly be the single to be released soon after).
And of course, tomorrow is Lara’s birthday – she’ll be 43. Fans are already sending felicitations and putting together videos; one such can be seen at:
www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=bc9-moBB1Ew
Let’s hope her birthday will be bright and cheerful for her, a happy harbinger for the year to come.
