June 16th I went to a concert. Alas it was not Lara's concert (my favorite female singer) but Mario Frangoulis' concert (my favorite male singer). What are the chances of my two favorite singers performing on the same night? OYE what a decision to make. But I had bought Mario's tickets two weeks before Lara announce she would be in Montreal. I was not diappointed but I was thinking of Lara's concert that evening.
For those of you not familiar with Mario, he is a Greek singer who has a wonderful tenor voice. If you like Josh Groban you will love Mario. He is so much better than Josh. He sings in Italian, English and Greek. He started out as an actor on stage in England - Les Miserable, Phantom Of The Opera, Westside Story
Here is his website. www.mariofrangoulis.com/
Now for the concert.
Mario performed in the small intimate Sanders Theater (1,200 people), in Boston, on the Harvard University campus. The theater was filled. He travels with four or five musicians and they were there along with about a 30 piece orchestra, some from the Boston Symphony.
He came out belting. In his first song Granada, he hit notes that sent chills through me. The tears came to my eyes. He sang some songs from his albums "Sometimes I Dream" and "Follow Your Heart". When he sang "So In Love", I kept waiting for Lara to pop in. He sing with the same emotions and passion as does Lara. He is an interpretor of music not a singer of music.
In the beginning of the concert the audience was relatively subdued. Lots of clapping and appreciation. The second half was totally different. Mario received about seven or eight standing ovations. Many people we yelling "bravo". He sang some Greek songs and did a little Greek dancing. LOL
At the end he did the typical three encores but because we the audience would not stop applauding he ended up doing three more songs.
I had the good fortune of being in the first row center. I swear Mario blew a kiss right at me. LOL He threw a red rose to my sister. It was truly a magical evening.
Like Lara, Mario is trying to break into the U.S. market.
If anyone is interested in Mario, I would be very happy to send a sample of his music.
