The Italian 'tour' continued this past week, including Lara's performance on "CD Live" of the duet of "Un Cuore Malato" with Gigi d'Allesio on Friday. The program name is somewhat ironic because the performance was done lip-synching. Lara apparently had bronchitis which would have made singing difficult in any event, and what was shown was apparently a mix of three different recorded performances. Lara still danced and swayed to the music, and still appeared very happy to be there, giving great praise to Gigi concerning how lucky she was to be able to sing with him. The video is available on the web.
On Saturday, Lara joined Gigi for his concert in Rome before thousands of people. She sang two songs and received a tremendous response. [In translation from ila84 on the official site] "Lara Fabian…what to say…Extraordinary…Magnificent….when she left the stage she was submerged in applause, and it was very moving." According to the reports, their duet was filmed to be the clip for "Un Cuore Malato". However, nais08 reported that Lara sang her part of the duet in French (!). Clearly these last two sentences don't seem to relate well to one another…and larafabian.net seems to indicate that the video was actually shot in October in Rome. Presumably this will all be clarified.
Today, Lara was on the program "Buona Domenica" on 'Canale 5' but in the middle of her performance of "Adagio" they cut for a commercial, and when they came back, they didn't interact with her. This brought the channel a barrage of very negative comments, especially from Gigi's fans, who seem to have adopted Lara as someone they need to protect and promote (possibly because of her effusive comments about him). The channel apparently refused to allow the comments on their forum. For those who understand Italian (or to some degree even without fully understanding it), a discussion of this is given on www.campanianews.net/ [the text on the right hand side] (thanks to nais08 on the official forum).
This trip is another indication of Lara's multiple affiliations, both in practice and in her own mind. When asked in Italy recently what her origin was she said "Sicillian"; when asked in Canada what she considered herself, she said "Canadian"; and in responding in an interview with a Belgian newspaper, she referred to herself as "being fully here now". So it was interesting to see these affiliations interact in the recent article in the "Canadian Italian Daily News" which discussed Lara's Italian origins and gave a history of her career. Interestingly, the article completely skipped her 'American experience' and the English albums. In the daily magazine "Leggio", when referring to her upcoming duet in Rome, Lara was referred to as a 'Canadian artist'. And continuing this theme, Lara's interview with the Canadian publication "Le Soleil" done during her recent Canadian visit finally appeared; it was primarily concerned with her illness and emotional state, and how she has regained her balance. Her comments, as always, were typically poetic, e.g., "I took some black sheets (pages) to draw some white stars…."
However exhilarating the Italian promo has been for Lara - and from her demeanor, it clearly has been that - it comes to a shrieking halt this week as Lara joins the "Night of the Proms" tour. For those unfamiliar with it, this is from their official site:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The Night of the Proms is one of the most visited and most attractive musical events in Europe. It is special, first and foremost because of the unique mix of famous classical music and pop evergreens with which this event shifts musical borders. Young and old uninhibitedly swing to the beat of classical melodies and thousands strike up Elgar's "Land of Hope and Glory". That is what makes the Night of the Proms so different from other concerts. The regular Night of the Proms orchestra Il Novecento and conductor Robert Groslot play music from the last three centuries in such a playful manner and with such verve, that everybody is carried away by their delightful performances.
With equal zeal, the orchestra accompanies international pop artists who enrapture the audience with their greatest hits.
Also unique is the composition of the audience. Standing in front of the stage, the young make a lot of atmosphere. Their liveliness works infectious on the seated audience, who in their turn cannot sit still. Exuberance is mixed with subdued moments, in which everybody respectfully listens to the musicians who leave the beaten tracks. In this way, the Night of the Proms evolves into an unparalleled event, night after night, year after year.
This Spring, The Night of the Proms is staged in the French speaking part of Belgium (Charleroi), immediately followed by a tour in France (several cities)."

Lara is with them for ten performances through the end of March, starting this coming Friday. Other performers include Tears for Fears, Murray Head, Cristophe Willem, Tony Henry, John Miles, Il Novecento and Fine Fleur. Lara joined Tears for Fears on a song or two during the autumn portion of the tour and is likely to do so again. This gives her another chance to make new connections.
Looking even further downstream, as you probably know, Lara is scheduled to go to Nepal in May with AMTM, the charity organization for which Lara has now become the "Godmother". larafabian.net has an interview with the president of AMTM . He discusses how Lara became involved (through the guitarist Lourent Roubach who was an active member and was part of the "Un Regard Neuf" tour); that they will build educational and medical facilities; and that Lara wanted to see the concrete evidence of what the organization does (she helped raise 49,000 euros with her concert last September). The mission, one of their two annual visits, extends from May 7 through the 20th, and Lara will be there for half that time. Lara will also sell some of her stage costumes from September through December this year to help provide further funds.

What would we do without your updates David? You are wonderful. Thanks, as always.
Sorry to hear Lara is sick but the reception in Italy sounds great.
