Although she had no official scheduled appearances this week, Lara still managed to make news (as always). [The first part of the week, when there was no news of her whatsoever, people on web sites were already wondering where she was...]
A program aired this week dedicated to the French singer Salvatore Adamo, who has many parallels with Lara. He was born in Sicily, is known for his romantic songs (many of which he writes himself) and for being a tireless worker, who has sung at places all around the world and in different languages. Though his peak popularity was in the '60s he has been successful ever since. An advertisement for the program went out featuring a few singers, most prominently Lara, who sang a portion of his song "Inch'Allah". Oddly, however, when the show itself aired, Lara was not in it. Nevertheless, the promo is available on the web.
Concerning another person to whom she has similarities, Lara was featured in the publication 'France dimanche'. The article discussed Lara's great admiration and affection for Barbra Streisand, who she actually met and dined with back in 1995. It was noted that she has been an idol for Lara ever since she saw Barbra in the movie "Yentl" when she was a child. The article also notes the many commonalities between them, both their styles of singing and the great adoration of their fans, and recounted the various songs they have both sung (the Yentl medley, Et maintenant, Calling You, My Funny Valentine). Lara's remaining dream in this respect is to sing a duet with her, something the article says is even now possible as Streisand still has a 'voice of gold' at age 65. There doesn't seem to be any reason for the article at this time - it may be just a 'filling space' piece, now that Lara is not doing more to fill it herself!
More details have surfaced concerning Lara's upcoming theatrical production at la Madeleine à Paris. It apparently will play during the months of September through November 2007. Remember, in a cryptic interview late last year, Lara mentioned she was thinking of a child for the new year - clearly it was not 2007, but with this schedule, 2008 is not out of-the-question (Nature-willing).
And with that in mind, Lara was also featured in a short article in "Ici Paris" this week, photographed walking and dining with Gerard Pullicino. Apparently he had been waiting for a divorce proceeding to go through, and on January 14th it was made final. The article said that he and Lara were now discussing marriage and setting a date. The article noted that she had been engaged in relationships before (e.g., Rick Allison, Patrick Fiori, JFL) which had not reached 'the long term', but that watching these two together, the writer felt this looked like it very well might. The writer also noted that her career is now sufficiently well-established that she could afford to take the time off. Obviously it's hard to predict, but with her desire for a child (and her child-bearing years passing), there's added incentive. It would certainly fit the schedule that's been suggested.
[As an aside, most of the sites dedicated to Lara have not carried this story, presumably because it impinges on her 'personal life' (which in effect means romantic attachments). One wonders how far this will be carried - if she gets married, will that be mentioned? Will any mention of a child be 'verboten'? And why did they all wish her 'happy birthday', wasn't that 'personal' rather than professional? Once one starts in on censorship, it can easily become arbitrary and constraining.] Scans of both of the articles mentioned here are available on Laradom.
This coming week, again, nothing is on the schedule publicly, and from the news photos, if Lara is working on the 'Italian' album, it is in Paris (despite her comment about how much she hates being there). A somewhat busier schedule resumes in mid-February.
