This was indeed as advertised - a week in which Lara was nowhere in evidence. The 'news' update therefore consists of little more than some secondary events which didn't involve her personally.
The video of "La prochaine sortie" on Radio Canada did in fact become available on the web Monday (at lara-fabian.net). There was a small possibility from the title of the show ("The Next Release") that it might actually contain some info on the upcoming 'Italian' album but as was more probable, it was concerned with "Un Regard Neuf", in particular "Aime". Lara did look sensational.
"Aime" has moved up four places, and is now 26th on the list of singles in France. In a 'song of the year' contest on the Belgian channel RTL, "Aime" finished 7th.
It's been proposed by TVA in Canada in association with France 2 that a show be produced which teams stars of Radio-Canada with famous skaters, for duet skating exhibitions - a Quebec version of 'Stars on Ice'. This follows similar shows already produced by the channel involving dancing and singing. Among the stars approached, it was noted that "Lara Fabian has already manifested her desire to skate with Elvis Stojko" - three time world champion, double silver metal winner in the Lillehammer Olympics, who retired from 'amateur' competition in 2002. "In each of the 'Champions on Ice' broadcast, four skaters will be doubled with their Olympic level or professional. They will have seven days to prepare a number away from the ice and on the ice. In the framework of the broadcast, there would also be some musical performances with the invited artists. The stars must possess a minimum of skill on ice. They will also be evaluated by three judges. At the moment, 8 broadcasts of 90 minutes are envisioned [hence 32 couples]. The seven best couples will confront each other in a grand finale" [in translation from http://www.showbizz.net]. As for the timing, the option on the rights for the show is held until December 2007; if it materializes, TVA would present it in the fall. While the producer is confident it will eventually take place, apparently the various parties involved are still far from agreement.
In case anyone is interested in going, ticket prices have been announced for the San Remo festival in Italy at the end of February. For the best seats, they are 150 euros per night during the first 4 nights, and 600 euros for the last night (!). For seats in the 'Gallery' the prices are 85 euros and 285 euros respectively. Someone suggested that they could fly from France to Montreal for those prices. Apparently this is the Italian equivalent of the 'Cannes film festival' except for music, and only the 'most promising' stars are invited; Laura Pausini, Nek, Giorgia and even Gigi D'alessio became known thanks to this festival. Prices are so high because it's a relatively small room, and three-quarters of the seats are reserved for VIPs. Lara will join Gigi as invited guests of honor to sing "Un cuore malato". Lara's fan club began operation last December, and so the time for renewing subscriptions has come for many people who signed up. There's been a discussion on the official site as to whether the cost (38 euros) is worth it. In particular, it was noted that some of the things promised - Lara giving a private concert for fan members, members getting a chance to interview her personally - did not come to pass. In practice, the only thing fan club membership provided were the 4 slim magazines - which had some pretty pictures, an intro by Lara, a couple of articles, especially concerning Lara's travels, and then a word game contest at the end. Lara's father was asked whether the other promised inducements would materialize this coming year (after all, she was quite busy last year).
His reply reinforced his reputation as the anti-diplomat:
(in translation)
"How do you want me to respond to you?
You are the only one who could judge if you want to reinscribe or not?
If the gifts offered last year are not agreeable to you, what is there to say?
I could encourage you to remain by impressing you, but that isn't our politics.
You are an adult, the choice is yours."
As you might imagine, that response did nothing to calm the waters. Some people said they would give it one more year, and if nothing more was offered, they would stop. Others said one should appreciate that there is a fan club, which for many years did not exist. Personally, I like one aspect of Pierre's response: it certainly is not their politics to maximize their popularity at all costs (of course, one doesn't have to be overly gruff about it). That is one of the most appealing aspects of Lara's personality; while she clearly wants to be popular, she won't bend her standards to achieve it. This comment also relates to Lara's 'commercial' DVD "Chante avec Lara Fabian", which is reviewed in another post.
For those who are fan club members, the fifth edition of Farfallina has not yet been sent out, as Lara apparently wants to add her contribution, and has been delayed by all the TV shows she's been on. The estimate at this time is that it should be mailed later this month.
For the coming week, there is again nothing publicly on Lara's calendar. Public activities seem to resume the second week in February. For those of you who have access to it, France TV5 (or at least the US version of the channel) is presenting the latest "Symphonic Show" that Lara was on this coming Monday night at 8:24 PM [videos of Lara's performance have already appeared on the web].
