News Update: 9/10
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lara gave her two concerts in the French Islands of Mauritia and Renault this past week. While this could be another post, I've included in the update a translation of an interview Lara gave before the concert on the 'Isle of Maurice', and a description of that concert which took place before some 5,000 people (for the original in French, see Laradom). Nice to see the response from some critic basically seeing Lara for the first time (a number of us know how that feels…). [As usual, I've left it in somewhat literal form to get across the nature of the French discourse.]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On passing our place for a unique concert, Lara Fabian gave up the time for a meeting with the press. We would have wished more intimacy….
She finally arrives. The gold of her hair prevents us from recognizing her, but quickly, the kindness which emanates from her has that which catches the eye. Straight hair, glasses posed on the tip of the nose, which she raises quickly to permit the photographers to take a photo.
Quite slender in her pretty silk skirt that she wears attractively, Lara Fabian is like one imagined her. She succeeds in the delicate marriage of finesse and vigor. Others would have collapsed from fatigue after the long hours in the airplane without having closed their eye. Her, no. Her happiness at being there is communicative, even if her bodyguards have an excess of zeal.
Settled, she keeps control at the beginning, allowing herself to go later. She speaks with volubility, without constraint.
Lara Fabian has the taste of talking. She takes the time to respond to the questions. She is simple and friendly. She is true. She has the instinct and sensitivity on the watch. With her, it is a subtle mixture of sensitivity and intelligence.
TALKATIVE ADVENTURE
One is quickly under her charm. She doesn't deny herself any words and when one is facing her, it is a talkative adventure, which doesn't grow tiring at any moment. "I can't explain the sincerity of the public. Since ten years that France opened for me a space for work, I have a loyal audience. I live that as a history of love."
And love, Lara Fabian sings of it in four languages that she handles to perfection. "I finish always by speaking of love for it is the most important thing in my life."
Lara Fabian is light. With her, the true and humane feelings triumph. Love which dictates her artistic creation, always carries her a long way. And when the critics have been acerbic concerning her faculty of putting so much power in to her voice, Lara Fabian knew to get back up.
"Perhaps that in some way I held the stick that one beat me with, but I am Italian by origin, with me, one cultivates altruism, kindness and sincerity. I didn't understand all this violence that broke on me. This biting pain that I felt in France forced me to relearn the relationship that I maintained with the media. Today, I try to be myself as much as possible, even if it means attracting love or hate. One will never please everyone."
FAILURE
Lara Fabian has therefore never been afraid of taking risks. In her métier, she cultivates the desire of still and always learning, to perfect herself, to give the best, if it is not, for all to give.
The quasi failure of her second English album has opened her eyes. "My sole grievance is that certain multinationals make music a perishable commodity. The thirteen songs of this album will remain for me. It is therefore even not a failure, since neither the public nor the media heard it. It is a failure only faced with the reality of commerce."
With the album in Italian which arrives next year, Lara Fabian wants to go towards another audience. "There at least, I would not deal with a multinational." This idea seems to give power to her wings. Generously, Lara Fabian writes and composes for artists resulting from reality TV: Nolwenn Leroy and Myriam Abel. "I am not of the genre which judges. I find that sterile. All artists have the right to a window. It is those who are around who make a business of them. As for knowing if one becomes artist in three months, I do not believe. But is it that one becomes it in 30 years? I don't know anything anymore!"
Not the language of wood or of hypocrisy. She has her convictions and knows to defend them with some well-felt words.
With her, there is no longer any place for babbling. This singer who speaks without depriving herself of words, knows also to use them in the most brilliant manner. She doesn't repeat herself, but has the art of persuading, like her touching songs. Light songs, this is not her thing. Committing herself to the profit of a cause, it is a logical manner of imagining her métier.
"Committing oneself, it is a way of legitimizing that which one does." It is therefore the art and the manner of conceiving an album.
SINCERE NATURE
A work of creation in which Lara gets down to with requirements. "It is not a cerebral exercise, but an artistic march of the soul. With culture comes enrichment. To question the society and the politic, it is solely by instinct. My objective for myself, it is to make love pass. I am perpetually in search of this sentiment."
By nature sincere, Lara Fabian does not play the star. She is herself. But she can be also very close to us, like when she speaks of her passion for cooking. "I am passionate about gastronomy." In her kitchen, she takes delight in the recipes of her grandmother, if she isn't in the middle of reading Amelie Nothomb or the biography of Charlie Chaplin.
Lara Fabian has learned to be close to others. She has also learned to open up, without showing herself too much. Has she matured? "I am especially aged!" she exclaims with a clap of laughter.
Lara Fabian so sweet, so full of her art, so much attached to the stage with this desire of giving before even thinking of receiving, has only one limit: that of being a complete artist.
THE STAR INVESTS THE STAGE WITH HER SOUND.
THE GREAT LARA
"I have seldom had the occasion of living [fully] the first time recently, I am therefore going to taste each second passed in your company!" Lara Fabian knows to say to her public. After the resounding "Good evening Maurice", she unwinds her charm and makes the show.
Authentic artist, born with her art, Lara Fabian is music and energy. Very mobile on stage, she explores all the corners, approaching the audience, makes for them some angelic smiles, in this immaculate white that she wears majestically.
It is a round of exceptional singing, to which we have had the right, despite some false ringing.
Her voice entirely fills the place, powerful, dazzling…Lara Fabian is light, music, dream and melancholy. The love that she sings at all times, holds you then by the skin of the heart, no longer to loosen its grip. Voila, we are filled, when she starts the first notes of 'J'y crois encore', when she revisits 'Tout', this song which was worth to her the consecration and a Victoire of music. When she invites her audience to join her in song on the refrain of 'Humana', Lara Fabian lets herself go, without effusion and above all without padding.
The guitarists and the drums, padded by the piano, push tender melodies, clothed with sweetness. While our hearts palpitate, as our skin trembles, and our eyes twinkle, Lara Fabian improvises herself as a young girl and tells us in a small voice, this beautiful history of "the Christmas prostitute".
At the first notes of 'Bambina', the emotion is at its paroxysm. The music sounds midnight blue. She dresses herself then in livelier colors on 'L'homme qui n'avait pas de maison'. The story of this Homeless Man who did not want any sad song," distills a good communicative mood.
Never has an artist so mastered her art and her vocal chords. We had not expected less from Lara Fabian, but one did not know that she was so energetic. In a song turn in all intimacy Wednesday at the Center Swami Vivekananda, this beauty on stage dropped off the best of her vast repertoire. The audience, totally conquered, gave her everything.
Some non-arpeggiated harmonies further, and there is her Ave Maria full of other high notes. A delight. A rapture.
With Lara Fabian, the musical adventure becomes also a talkative adventure. Her hymn to tolerance and to the respect of differences, 'La difference' starts, and her humanity takes all the light.
The artist also loves silences, not those which are heavy, but those which are full of meaning. "This evening, I go entirely to make with my mates so that the silence be the most beautiful of musics." Voila, we are with the angels for our taste of inspired melodies, well felt and true. "Thanks for your magical island."
"See you very very soon, I love you!" The soft notes of 'Je t'aime', reprised by heart by the audience, earn for her another standing ovation. Another moment of grace. To the next tour of singing Lara!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Other comments concerning this concert were equally as ebullient. Although not mentioned here, Lara noted while on stage that the pluralistic religions on Mauritia were an example of how people could live in peace elsewhere.
At Reunion Island, the public was very well informed about her songs, and apparently sung along to another superb performance. Lara indicated that it was her last concert for "9", so it was like dessert.
The repertoire for both concerts was typical for the 'summer festival'. About the only negative mentioned was the excessive nature of the bodyguards, who were super zealous in keeping everybody away from her, even members of the press (you got a taste of this in the interview above).
The new single 'Aime' is listed on radio atlantis and classed as 49th of 365 titles. It is being played on MFM occasionally. Lara indicated she had also recorded an English version, and Paula tells me that there are actually four versions: French, English, instrumental and karaoke. Whether this single will be available for sale at some point remains to be seen (several people have reported looking for it and not finding it as of yet).
Lara has recorded a duo with Gigi d'Alessio in three different languages: French, Italian and Spanish. It will probably be a single in Italy and perhaps in France. His album is due out October 27. Several people suggested that with Lara's own new Italian single, and perhaps this one (if they are indeed different), she will be making a concerted run at the Italian market.
That brings up the question concerning the coming 'multilingual' album. As can be seen in her interview above, Lara is continuing to refer to it as the "Italian" album, and has done so for the past several months. This has been treated on the web as being part of Lara's affectation for being Italian, and her desire to emphasize that. But in the interview, she also noted that it was not being done with a 'multinational'. When in Montreal, discussing the 'multilingual' album, she said it had been conceived and was being done in association with a US company. Is it possible that it has changed, and is now really Italian? The English version of "Aime" seemed a logical choice to be one of the English songs on the multilingual album - if it is truly being released as part of the single, wouldn't that be wasting it as a selling point? Perhaps too much is being read into her statements, but we know things change rapidly with Lara - regarding her, seeing is really necessary for believing.
This coming week Lara presumably is in Montreal (for at least part of it). She is due back in France to record for the radio broadcast "Les maîtres chanteurs" at the studio of "Sud Radio" in Toulouse on September 13th. Her next major concert is the following week in Paris; more on that in the next update.
There was a little correction that I added to David's post.
Hey David,
Thanks for the info. Very interesting as usual.
I have a correction to the info I gave you pertaining to the Aime CD. I believe the four songs will be:

Aime Instrumental Version
Aime Live Bruxelles 25 Mars 2006
Sorry for the miss information. The above is from the cd back that I saw on the LFIAG French site.
