The beginning of an active fall season for Lara…
The official site has clarified that there is only one DVD for 'Un Regard Neuf', it contains the concert plus 45 minutes of bonus material, and is sold either with the CD (as the "limited edition") or separately. The CD will also contain the studio version of 'Aime'...
And as you may well know by now, this studio version of 'Aime', the first single from the new live album has started receiving airplay in France, harkening what would appear to be a major push for the album by Universal. Additional public appearances by Lara are already being lined up, presumably to promote it. Announced specifically is the next Star Academy (October 20), 'les enfants de la tv', and perhaps Hit Machine.
This does raise the question about conflicting publicity with the new Italian single. On that front, there are plenty of rumors, including comments that she has recorded 'Come tu mi voui' (You need love); that it will be 'La Donna Che Vorrai' which she has already sung in concert; that she will work with Gigi d'allesio (which she has also already done); and that she will sing a duo with Giorgia (whom you may have seen in the last Dolce Italia). Whatever comes out - and it remains to be seen whether it truly happens in September, as is still indicated on the official site - it would seem unlikely to be promoted in France under the current conflicting circumstances. It would appear to be exclusively for the Italian market, at least initially, as the official website says.
As noted by Italien974 on Laradom, and by Elliot in another post, Lara has agreed to give a concert at the Kremlin in Moscow next year (pretty unique site!), and negotiations are underway concerning her being the 'Godmother' for New Wave 2007 (remember that when she was in Latvia for New Wave 2006 she said she'd play a bigger role next year). These appearances can be interpreted as representing a promotion for the multilingual album. [But see the comment, below.]
This coming week Lara gives her two concerts in the southern Indian Ocean islands of Mauritius and Réunion. There was an unintentionally humorous interview with the Marketing executive (henceforth ME) of Kawai Entertainment, the organizer and producer of Lara's concert in Mauritius. The interviewer was basically astonished that Lara would actually come to these remote places; this concert has already been postponed once (no great surprise) presumably because Lara was busy recording an album (which we've heard before and may be true). The ME was asked how did it actually come into being? He said that Lara had already been there for vacation, so convincing her wasn't difficult. However, they had trouble getting sponsors - apparently there wasn't great enthusiasm for this, and the tourism office wasn't much help! He indicated he had to work a long time to arrange it, and the big problem was getting the airline tickets (!) (this would be for Lara and five musicians). Air Mauritius gave them a break on the freight (Lara's musical equipment) but not on the tickets themselves. So they worked together with Réunion Island - Mauritius has luxury hotels on the beach where Lara could stay for the two concerts (Hotel Maritium was willing to provide them), and Réunion helped with the airfare. Europcar agreed to provide the limousine, and Mauritius is providing a VIP welcome. The ME, trying hard to prove that it would actually happen, said she already has one foot on the plane! And in fact in a separate interview, Lara said she was in a hurry to get there - that she did know the place from her vacationing there, and they were an amiable and sweet people.
We automatically think that at this level of success everything is arranged at an automatic, professional level, but as this interview shows, it can be really haphazard, especially with Lara going to these out of the way venues. This may not be a topic for a 'news update' but there is very little discussion on the web of why Lara chooses to go to certain locales - Lebanon, Turkey, Morocco, Latvia, Russia, the French Isles, and now these islands - and not other more obvious places, like Italy, the U.S., even Spanish speaking countries for her Spanish songs, where she could obviously sell a lot more records. Clearly it's not commercially oriented; BenjaminBelgium on Laradom suggested that Lara really isn't a good salesperson. Her sales are a product of her prodigious talent and her personality, not (at least apparently) any real strategic plan. The idea one gets is that she goes to these places because it tickles her fancy - she may want to see them, she may want a vacation there, she may want to just get more out of life by going there.
Having said all this the idea that she's going to be spending additional time next year in Eastern Europe should probably not be literally interpreted to have all that much to do with the multilingual album. While that may be a secondary reason, more likely she just wants to do it. And that raises questions about whether she will really promote the multilingual album in the U.S., which is one place she apparently does not particularly like to be. We'll see whether commercial pressures provide sufficient encouragement.
A subject that comes up occasionally is whether there will be any books containing the music and lyrics of Lara's songs, or music books associated with her albums. There was such a book for Pure but not for Nue. Responding to questions concerning "Neuf", Lara's father said there is no plan for anything at this time (which again illustrates the overall weakness in their commercial approach). But as a sign of her continuing sales on her own terms, "Neuf" has risen to 65th on the French charts, some one and a half years after its release.
After her coming concerts this week, Lara goes to Montreal (perhaps house-related?), and then has a number of events planned for later on in September, to be reviewed in the next update (when the situation may be a bit clearer).
