Another quiet week for Lara publicly, with news of future appearances/releases dominating the discussion.
It was announced the previous week that Lara would one of the women presenting songs about women on a program to be broadcast on France 3, scheduled to be shown March 7th (just before the ‘rights of women day on March 8th). It is to be recorded on Feb. 28th and March 1st in Paris. The songs will then be released on a CD “Paroles de Femmes”. Lara will certainly be in Paris then, for she is to be present for the finals of the AICOM competition, for which she is the ‘godmother’. However, despite this initial indication, Lara apparently will not be part of it; she is not on the list of participants in the show’s recording, nor is she listed on the CD. Clearly Lara was supposed to be involved, as fans calling up were initially told she would be (but more recently told, ‘no’), and the press releases had her name. We obviously don’t know what happened – she is a big supporter of ‘the rights of women’ – so some fans worried that it might be a health issue, that perhaps she is running herself ragged with all her various projects. Also possible of course is a conflict between Lara and the show’s organizers, although she has worked well with Stanislas (the show’s director) in the past. It would have to be have been something fundamental for Lara to miss a project of this nature.
No further news on the other project in France that has blown hot and cold, the French ‘Dancing with the Stars’. Latest we heard was that Lara would appear, though no date has been given.
The PBS ‘Great Performances' special “The Hitman Returns: David Foster and Friends”, a one hour 58 minute show will be broadcast on U.S. PBS stations starting the week of March 7th. Many of the PBS stations will show it on Wednesday March 9th, and multiple showings are planned. Among the 18 songs to be presented, both of Lara’s performances, her solo of ‘Caruso’ and her duet with Michael Bolton of ‘The Prayer’ are scheduled to be broadcast, and will appear on the DVD. As has been pointed out by others, the duet will not be on the CD, perhaps because it’s likely to be on Michael Bolton’s own Christmas CD (which had been planned for last Christmas but will now be released sometime in 2011).
Lara has several concerts planned in March. On the 18th she will be in Armenia for “French Culture Day” in that country. Here is the translated description of the event:
“In these days Yerevan will host many festive events, and among them, two special concerts. March 17 at the large Hall of the Philharmonic Children's Festival will take place with French songs. Performing will be children's vocal ensembles and soloists of all ages. The festival will be organized as a charity event for children, under the auspices of the Charitable Foundation "Give Life ". All fees from the concert will go to charity. The main surprise of the day - at the end of the concert with the children, pop singer Lara Fabian will sing…Lara will give a recital at the JCC on March 18th… The project is an initiative of the French Embassy in Armenia, and supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture.”
Still scheduled for later in March is Lara’s appearance at Mikahil Gorbachev’s 80th birthday party in London.
As others have also mentioned in a separate thread, on June 29 and 30th, Lara will ‘participate’ in a play in Paris “1939”, described as “a story of men and women caught up in World War II”. The poster, at www.1939musical.com/, notes Lara’s participation specially. But what it means is not clear – she is not actually listed in the cast for the play (which will have three performances) nor is she listed as writing the music or lyrics for it (done by Stephane Metro). Perhaps she will be helping the singers as it involves students from AICOM and is being produced by Pierre-Yves Duchesne, Lara’s vocal coach. Despite the uncertainty, fans have already ordered tickets (the phone number for reservations is available on the poster). Note that this was nominally the time for Lara to be involved in the filming of ‘Charlie’, although no one would be surprised if it did not occur then, given all the delays.
While on the subject, Lara has written the preface for a book by P. Y. Duchesne; here is the translation:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
“To preface the book by Pierre-Yves is a bit like going to plant a tree at the entrance of the Hanging Gardens ... Dangerous mission...
Everything is explained so much better than by writing, when you are touched by his grace, which is none other than his teaching and his extraordinary knowledge ...
Write ... this is what he asked me to do ... So, Master ... I m carrying it out with all the respect I have for you.
The Art of Pierre-Yves Duchesne is that of ‘singing well’ and this at all stages .....
He is the holder of a pure and effective teaching, heir to a knowledge that the greatest opera singers of the world use since time immemorial ...
And contrary to popular belief, this knowledge is perfectly adaptable to any other singer.
It is an application of our physical assets, an unstoppable utilization of our internal and external facial muscles, that our popular singers have the annoying habit of forgetting…
Memory will return to you in a nanosecond when you achieve it at which point it is obvious and there is so much less suffering to engage your voice as he teaches…
To engage…yes! For it is by understanding that we are at the service of those perfectly designed muscles, that we torture in aid of of grotesque effects (this is from experience) that we are able, once it is acquired, to forget the technique and return to the other area of singing… The one where we say, perform or deliver our deep feeling, the one where we FINALLY SING.
There also he My Teacher is of an implacable accuracy…
With your permission I would like to share my unconditional love towards this man and the wonderful teacher that is Pierre-Yves.
Describing him does not really belong in a preface…But beyond all that he teaches and transmits, it is his generosity, humanism and great psychology that affected me the most…
At a time in my life when I thought that my vocal mechanism was derailed for good, it is above all these humain qualities which came to save me…
One thing is sure he never has FEAR, or at least you will not know it when you find yourself in front of him ...
For his sole purpose beyond ‘singing well’ is to protect you from all the psychic paralyses so dear to the singer who is quick to be paralyzed in full flight when he lets them surprise him…
Pierre-Yves hates vocal surprises…He is right…
We do not throw a plaster of clay randomly on a “Donatello” to see what that will do… Each blow given by the instrument that releases the beauty immersed under the stone is thought about and reveals its truth.
It's the same for singing…
This is his credo: To find the Place of the voice, so as to sculpt in the course of singing it own and TRUE personality.
What he teaches us, armed with all his living patience is VITAL for the singer…
Especially, do not imagine you'll be constrained by his technique and its requirements or that his knowledge is a galley for Olympic rowers ... no.
His teaching frees the singer of all blunders, though usually unconscious, and restores confidence ...
A discipline that is never a prison or an obligation but a daily exercise that the athlete who hopes to attain the highest level commits to do every day.
We are what we CHOOSE to become.
Pierre-Yves suggests excellence…
Not easy, I admit ... I fight every day with him to grow better vocally ... and humanly...
The challenge is enormous, long hours of work waiting for me but thanks to him I know that the victory will be beautiful.
To you Singers, professional or amateur or simply lovers of music like me, whatever the range of your voice, its amplitude, power, or even its color, this book will teach you that there is only one PLACE for it that resonates and vibrates justly ...
It is the quintessence of this innovative book, easy, fun and educational, that teaches you how to find it ...
This "place "is accessible to all ... Get there.
With tenderness,
Lara Fabian

Concerning past projects, the Mlle. Zhivago album has gained 5 places on the Russian charts, and is back up to #6. The ‘Best of’ release has re-entered the ‘compilations list’ in France at #39, and gained 13 places to #177 for all albums. In Belgium the album is up one spot to #15, and the DVD has gained 2 places to #10.
Now for a few interesting points from the biography of Lara, pp. 41-45:
**Once she came to the public’s attention in Quebec, Lara’s popularity grew rapidly. By the end of 1991 she won ‘Felixes’ (the equivalent of a Grammy, or in France, les Victories) as best performer of the year, and also best show of the year.
**However, she was not completely absent from Europe either, even back then. In 1991 she went back to France to record “Laisse-moi rever” for a film by Caldue Pinoteau (the composer in charge of the film track had heard her first album). Bad luck with respect to her musical career in films started early – due to problems in the editing and production of the movie, it was the one song from it that was never released on a 45, although it is on the film album.
**By 1993 Lara was performing before hundreds of thousands of people, her first album went platinum (100,000 copies), and she was a big hit at the winter “Francofolies’ in Montreal.
**In 1994 ‘Carpe Diem’ is released, with the concept of ‘seizing the day’ an antidote to what Lara considered her big problem, dwelling on her past and worrying about the future. The album became a gold record (50,000 copies) in 2 weeks, and three songs, “Leila”, “Tu t’en vas” and “Si tu m’aimes” went to #1 in Quebec. She wins a poll as the ‘most promising artist in Quebec’, a rare achivement for someone who isn’t Canadian.
**In 1995 she again wins Felix awards for female performer of the year and show of the year. The same year she takes out Canadian citizenship so firmly does she feel herself embedded in that country. She buys a house in an exclusive suburb of Montreal, where she burns the words “Carpe Diem” into the glass on her front door. She gives names to recipees invented by a local Japanese chef, and a chololaterie opens with a special chocolate named “Lara Star”. It looks as if Lara has found her true home...
Lara will be in Paris this coming week for the AICOM competition. Presumably she will not be present for the taping of the “Paroles des femmes” program, although one supposes that up until the last moment anything is possible...
