Lara’s ‘tale of two countries’ was in full swing this past week, although now that she is back in Canada, the weight of the news should shift there.
Lara continued expanding her presence in the Russian market, by participating in a concert celebrating 65 years of Russia’s nuclear industry (could there be any less contrived a celebration topic?). What made the event special from a publicity standpoint was that Lara’s song from it was shown on Russia 1 TV; and from a musical standpoint, because we got a chance to hear the full vocals of the new song “Llora”, the piano instrumental version of which Igor Krutoi played on a TV show some time ago. It is a beautiful composition, and Lara’s singing is spectacular; the Mlle. Zhivago album is shaping up to be everything one would have hoped. Videos of the performance are available at the usual sites on the web.
And as usual, we presumably got to hear the actual recorded version, for once again it was done lip-synched. This was perhaps the most egregious example yet of televised deception, for there was a symphony orchestra pretending to play on stage. One feels sorry for the audience in these ‘countries to the east’, although presumably they are used to this charade. Nevertheless, the Russian fans did seem irritated by it (in addition to feeling Lara doesn’t do it very well) – with the consolation that they will get to hear her really sing these songs in her upcoming live concerts.
Here is a translation from the Spanish (my Spanish is quite rusty, so any improvements are welcome!)

Cry
(Fabian and Krutoi)
Cry without tears, cry with your smile, cry and all will pass you.
Cry and you will be finished with this immense pain, cry to get some peace.
Cry and you will hear yourself, cry as I sing, free what kills your heart,
Cry and we will share the pain that your body did not have to discover,
Cry don’t be afraid, just sincere friendship cry my dear friend.
Let it go, you don’t have love, leave your grief in a corner, open the door and let's go.
Why die, I go forward, if you want air and happiness, freedom.
Sit here with me, tell me about your dreams, those that draw so happy lines
Sit a moment we fight in silence and that a heaven returns, that nobody hurts you, that no one ever condemns you until the moment of death,
Let it go, you don’t have love, leave your grief in a corner, open the door let's go.
Why die, I go forward, if you want air and happiness, freedom.
Let it go, you don’t have love, leave your grief in a corner, open the door let's go.
Let it go, you don’t have love, a man is not a man if he cannot love.

In addition, a video of a portion of Lara’s appearance on the Russian TV show “Musical Ring” also became available, as well as a low-quality version of the song she presented ‘Hollwood’ (or perhaps more appropriately, ‘Fairytale’, it’s equivalent in Russian). This was the song we heard snippets of in the “Making of the Winter Bouquet” clips from this past summer. An mp3 is available on larafabiannews.com
We now have heard in one form or another the following songs from Mlle. Zhivago: “Demaine n’existe pas”; “Lou”; “Mama”, “Toccami”; “Mlle. Hyde”; “Mr. President”; “Llora”; “Hollywood”; “Stop”; “Ever”; “Ascolta la voce”. That makes 11 songs; Lara indicated in a recent interview that there were 12 songs on the album, and if that’s true, we have only one left to hear. (Other people have assumed that there were only 11, which would mean we’ve heard all of them.) Since they were all lip-synced, we’ve now heard all or most of the cuts from the new album in their actual form, although obviously not at full quality. That won’t stop interested people from buying/downloading the CD, but this long, drawn-out preview does remove the surprise factor.
Before leaving this country (in a manner of speaking), fans noted that the Russian website www.lara-fabian.com/ does a wonderful job of presenting the Mlle. Zhivago material (as well as Lara’s concerts in Russia), with the various clips, interviews, photos, etc. To see the videos and photos, click on "KOHLIEPTbl".
In the discussion of this Russian site, which is connected to the others, (i.e., larafabian.borda.ru), ‘Maria’ said that Lara just told them that the current official site “larafabian.com” is soon going to be closed, and that the Russian administrators of this site (Sergey, Ksenia and Maria) will take part in the establishment of a new official site. Fans on the (French) official site thought that this was good news, because the Russian sites are so well done. But perhaps they have overlooked the implication: if true in all respects, it would imply that Lara is moving her official site out of Belgium/France, and to some extent at least, away from French. That change would certainly be revolutionary for Lara and her long-time fans!
And now it is on to Canada, where Lara is to spend this next week promoting TLFM and herself. Prior to her arrival, she spoke to the Canadian audience via ‘skype’ on the show ‘Salut Bonjour’. While the focus was on TLFM, the most interesting exchange was when Lara discussed the Mlle. Zhivago project (music + film) with the hosts, and they asked whether it would be released in Canada…Lara said she hoped so. The video of this interview is available on the web (e.g., larafabiannews.com).
She then gave an interview for the “Journal de Montreal”. The translation is given below.

Lara Fabian Returns to Her Roots
Lara Fabian is back home, where her roots are. The singer, who has fought against a liver tumor and who has settled her problems with his former collaborator, returns to probe the heart of Quebec with an album of reprises, Toutes les femmes en moi, released in Europe in spring 2009.
"We often think that because we do not see an artist, he no longer exists, whereas he’s doing a lot of things. It sometimes happens on other stages in other parts of the world, he writes another album", she begins, curled on a couch in a posh hotel downtown.
"It was rather a bright space, full of new things, very different from what life had accustomed me to until then," she said about her lack of recent years in the Quebec media landscape. Lara Fabian briefly re-emerged last summer, climbing on stage at the Summer Festival of Quebec.
"I am someone who is fragile, I am someone who doubts. Of course I was scared. Not even to be forgotten, that's not it, but perhaps not to arouse affection in return for this music. And that night was testimony to the contrary. (...) Do you get a big hug if it hasn’t gone well? " she said, smiling.
Calm and composed, the singer explained that the idea of this album of reprises - which also has its counterpart in English - was born of a conversation between her and her best friend.
"We asked the question, how do you become what you are, not what you would want to be, but what one really is," she said. "For fun”, they began to compile a list of famous people who helped to shape their personality, hence the choice of artists and songs on the album.
In France, “Toutes les femmes en moi” has been the subject of at least one not very flattering critique.
"I'm used to people beating me up over it. (...) This album, in the middle of crisis, has nevertheless sold 250,000 copies worldwide, "she recalled softly.
In great shape Lara Fabian had a close shave. A few years ago, doctors discovered she was suffering from a liver tumor.
"I think that I have a big temper," she said, laughing, “and that I saw red. Very angry, I mean very troubled in life”, she said, noting that she is now very well.
"I found the path and the solution to this within me. Everything is gone, as one hits upon the solution. Healing, that's it, is to put into words what hurts. Her trouble? "I control it, it is really dead. I am in peace, "she said.
In 2006, Lara hit the headlines of the news in Quebec with legal squabbling in court with his ex-colleague and ex-boyfriend, Rick Allison. Lara Fabian wanted to rerecord the songs they have co-written in Italian, Spanish or English, to which Allison opposed.
"The souls are eased and people have reasoned. We found a solution to things with great, great dignity.” “That's all”, the singer puts forward, while saying she is "finally" able to sing in the language she wants.
Miss Zhivago
Recently, Lara was quite successful in Eastern Europe, especially Russia, where she is preparing to launch another album, Mademoiselle Zhivago, which will be the soundtrack to a film planned for next year.
Mother of a three year old daughter, Lou, Lara Fabian puts her suitcases in Quebec for the week.
"I miss it terriblly," she confesses about his relationship with the Quebec public. "It's my roots. (...) It is here that I feel the best", she said, weighing each word.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lara has already started scheduling promotional appearances in Quebec, and this would be the perfect time for the official site to list them. Of course, it doesn’t, so fans have to find out by themselves. Today Lara will be on the radio program "Joël et Marie-Élaine le Matin" on RockDétente ; they’ve also organized a contest for the winner to have lunch with her, take a photo, and get an autographed album (see the site montreal.rockdetente.com/Contests/Register.aspx?ContestID=118195). The 29th, Lara is scheduled to be on the show “Les midis de Véro" in Montréal (see www.rythmefm.com/concours/1284578707/). On the 30th, Lara will be the guest of Eric Salvail, in his program "Fidèles au poste!" (see the site tva.canoe.ca/emissions/fidelesauposte/. ) On October 1st she will be in the studio of “Salut Bonjour” (the program she was just on via skype). Hopefully there will be others.
All this comes none too soon, because TLFM has already dropped on the charts, to 58th in Canada overall, and 20th in both Quebec and Montreal (though it is still 4th in sales at Archambault, and according to Cyberpress, it is still 8th in sales of French albums in Quebec, down from 5th). Whether there numbers would have been greatly different had she been there for the album’s actual launch is hard to say – it’s not clear how many fans Lara has left in Canada. She may find out on this trip…Nevertheless, these appearances should bring her back to the Canadian consciousness, at least somewhat.
Lara is supposed to be in Canada through October 4th. Pam pointed out that Lara’s appearance on the program “Dans l’universe de”, scheduled for October 6th, will actually be back in France (and fans have reported scrambling for tickets there). From the fans comments, it should be very similar to the Belgian program "Quelque chose en nous de". It has been suggested that fans who see Lara ask her when the live DVD of “Toutes les femmes en moi font leur show” and TLFM1 are going to see the light of day.
