Lara continued with the filming of Mme. Zhivago this past week, and the highlight, at least to some, was the perhaps unauthorized (by Lara) appearance of Lara’s daughter Lou in one of the videos (“The Making of Lullaby”). It was presented by the Director Alan Badoev on the official Mme. Zhivago website (see the separate thread for the youtube version), so was not a ‘bootleg’ video. Unlike my initial impression on viewing a shorter cut, it now appears as if Lou is not actually in the ‘Mme. Zhivago’ movie, and that the ‘baby’ referred to in the film clip is actually a real baby, as opposed to the 2 ½ year old Lou. That raises the question of whether Lara knew Lou was going to be shown in the director’s video, and why it happened. Given that the movie clip is entitled ‘Lullaby’ and the song ‘Lou’ is played in the background, perhaps the director felt it appropriate to show her in the video of its making. It may be that Badoev had no idea of Lara’s desire to keep Lou out of the public’s eye; from the clips we’ve seen, it’s not obvious that he can communicate directly with Lara in any language. Clearly Lara wasn’t keeping her hidden, walking around with her in full view of video cameras, although there’s no real evidence that she knew they were filming. Whatever the case, it was nice to see Lou – she is cute! However, one wonders what Lara thinks about it...did she approve it or not?
The subject actually grew to dominate the discussion on the official site forum, with fans arguing that unless Lara authorized it, it was a violation of her rights. Others thought too big a deal was being made of it. The subject grew so contentious that Nathalie threatened to close the entire “Mme. Zhivago” thread unless fans returned to the subject (the movie itself). Interesting, though, that she did not erase all the messages.
The actual movie video itself is associated with Lara portraying a woman in a concentration camp, and fans were startled to see her appearing as a bedraggled brunette. A number of fans noted that it’s always impressive when attractive performers do not seem to mind appearing worn and weary for the sake of the story – and that this attitude is in direct contrast with the impression some in the French media have of Lara. The “Making of” video also showed how Lara was having to adjust to following directions in a strange language during the somewhat chaotic live filming.
The next movie clip is the one in which Lara becomes a vampire. As reported on-line in an article, she had to learn a few words in Russian for dialogue purposes, and also sings a song in Russian on the album. We know there are songs in English, French and Italian –perhaps then Russian is the fourth language referred to in connection with the album, rather than Spanish (or maybe there are more than 4 languages). The ‘vampire’ pictures that are available from numerous sites, including the movie’s facebook page, are as exceptional in their own way as the downtrodden ones from the earlier video.
On day 5 of the filming, one hears Lara’s song “Je Vivrai” from “Carpe Diem”. Most people thought that it was being played during an interlude, not as one of the music selections on the film itself - although if the film clip has Lara dying, it would be appropriate. Hard to believe it would be on the new album, however.
The latest clip to be filmed is called “Mr. President” and photos are just starting to appear. Once again Lara looks different – so in addition to the different languages, this new project will provide us with a pot pourri of appearances!
It does now look as if there will be dialogue, and a connecting link between the different segments, so it will not be a simple replay of the video clips for “Neuf”, for example. Nevertheless, the clips are being shot quickly (filming is expected to end July 9th), and appear to be short from what we have seen (which could be misleading). It’s hard to imagine the whole film being longer than an hour, which is not long enough for a true cinematic release. The movie (or DVD) is to be available first in Russia and the Ukraine. With Universal Music France the producer, it should eventually show up in France as well.
In a break from the filming, Lara hosted the International Musical Comedy competition yesterday (Concours International de Comédie Musicale). The second place winner, who received as part of her prize singing lessons with Lara, was Anne Freches. Christina has put some photos on her website (see also larafabiannews.com), and an article, with a picture of the group is available at www.regardencoulisse.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/CICMjury.JPG
The other major news of the week involves Lara’s apparent renewed interest in Quebec. An article in “Le journal de Quebec” stated that Lara is one of the surprise invitees at the summer festival in Quebec City; this has since been confirmed by the festival itself. Her appearance is scheduled for Saturday, July 10 (hence the Mme. Zhivago filming better end July 9th!). Furthermore, they reported Lara will ‘return in force’ to Quebec this fall to promote EWIM and TLFM (this too has now been widely circulated on the web). It will have to be in the early fall; by November, Lara will be promoting Mme. Zhivago, with concerts already planned for November 3rd and 4th in Moscow, and the 9th and 10th in St. Petersburg. We don’t know what it means as far as any concerts in Quebec are concerned: Lara may just appear on TV/radio shows. Interestingly, the article noted EWIM as well (in fact, first): we had not heard before that it would also be released in Canada (which of course makes great sense if one wants a Canada-wide distribution).
September will also be the time for the release of the live DVD in France and Belgium; will Lara be there to promote it? Rumors persist that instead of an accompanying live CD, Lara will release as a bonus the first TLFM. It would make sense, although nothing has yet been confirmed. It’s probably too soon for the live DVD to be released in Canada at that time (where Lara might be able to promote it).
It appears as if Lara, at least, thinks her part of the filming will be finished by July, as she has scheduled an appearance in Turkey for July 2nd. Lara will then have performed in Israel and Turkey in close conjunction – two countries not currently on the best of terms. Hopefully that won’t impact her. Since this is so close to her filming dates, she may have to take time off to do it (as she did for the musical comedy competition last night).
The rest of the summer has yet to be filled in. Lara is no longer listed for the “Best of Belgium” concert to accompany the Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters tennis match on July 8th (wonder if she chose the Quebec City concert instead?). No further word on any filming of “Charlie”, originally scheduled for July. Presumably they are still looking to replace the lead actor (Richard Armitage, who had another project) and obtain sufficient funding. Lara is then scheduled for the ‘New Wave’ competition in Latvia on August 1st. Since she will be in Quebec, she might take July off there for summer vacation (she previously indicated she didn’t think she’d have time to do that this year).
“Poseidon2b” on the official site forum pointed out that a “tectonic and electronic” music video of “I Will Love Again” was put on ‘youtube’ several months ago. For those interested in something very different, it can be seen at:
