Another period of controversy concerning Lara and her projects, or lack of them.
Early in the week, the ‘sleeve’ for Lara’s supposed upcoming single “Quitte à partir” was released to the web and it immediately raised some suspicions, for it looked similar to several others she had done in the past. So ‘nicoleroy’ reporting on the official site, called Universal. Here (in translation) is her message describing the conversation:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Again, a joke by someone on the net who amused themselves and broadcast false information…
I called UNIVERSAL to get some info.
And all was denied. No album under this name [Ce nouveau moi] and no foreseen single for the moment.
There was not even any confirmation of an album of Lara’s being released December 1st.
The person on the telephone politely concluded while saying to me:
"It is crazy that which is being released about this album... For some months Lara Fabian is at the heart of all the vicious gossip! False projects: Theater, False Tour 2009, and falsely released music. Don’t worry, Lara will inform you through her official site as soon as there is anything concrete concerning her artistic life "

Putting the nail in the coffin, Christian (finally) posted a message on the official site in this thread saying (in translation):
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Good day to you all.
I am obliged to close this subject. All this information is false.
Have a good weekend.
Christian.

Moral of this story, and something we apparently didn’t learn well enough the last time, was that UNIVERSAL never releases any information concerning Lara, nor do they intend to. (Note that the person said she will release it through ‘her’ official site.) We had also noted that this proposed project had picked up where the last mis-information left off, by indicating that "since the theatre project had been called off, the release date could be moved up". Of course, what makes the deception work is that Lara herself is saying nothing, either on her website or in Farfallina, leaving the door wide open. For many other performers, that sort of absence is expected and respected – but Lara has always been so talkative, fans got used to knowing what was going on. Reducing her level of involvement with the fans has been slow to reduce their expectations of her – but with time that will happen (not really to her benefit).
Another controversy erupted this past week, in this case concerning Lara and the concert for Pavarotti (Sept. 13th). As given full expression on the forum of the official site, people have noticed that the explanation Lara’s people offered for her non-appearance does not seem to be true. Christian on July 8 said that Lara would not appear because of a change in concept – only opera singers were to be present. But it is now evident that only Lara and Amel Bent have been dropped – all the other non-opera singers (e.g., Patrick Bruel, Garou, Christophe Willem, Florent Pagny, Laura Pausini, etc. ) are still on the program. Jean Felix Lalanne is the director of this show, and there is speculation that Lara didn’t want to do it, or perhaps he was uncomfortable with her. No one knows, of course, but it seems quite foolish to provide an explanation that could easily be refuted. The show will be telecast on French 2, so we will see who is really there.
What both of these incidents have in common is what we have seen all along – Lara’s tone-deafness concerning public relations. No need to beat a dead horse – for those who have followed her, it is evident that it has handicapped her throughout her career.
Concerning projects still active, one would imagine that the description Matt Herskowitz provided of his joint project with Lara has validity. But in its latest incarnation, it no longer seems to be focused on classical music, and it has Lara writing only one song. Hearing her do reprises does have its own interest (and some of them may even be classical), although if it is the only thing that comes out in 2009, it will mark 4+ years since she released original songs, the longest gap in her career. It is not apparent when this album will be ready – at one point Matt said it would be finished in October, but he had no idea when it would be released.
October will also bring Lara’s private concert for her fan club in Brussels, and the hope is that people will ask her some specific questions and get some real answers (or at least hear her expectations). She will also give the two concerts in the South Pacific later on in the month. The way it looks now, we should not expect anything of substance before then.
