Calgary Victim's Father Says System Failed Son
The father of a man whose body was dumped from a moving vehicle in downtown Calgary said he had trouble getting help for his son's drug problems.
The body of Eric Serge Regimbald, 23, was thrown from a car Sunday morning on 4th Avenue SE near Centre Street as bystanders looked on in horror. The cause of death has not been released. Two men were questioned Sunday but no charges have been laid.
But Regimbald's father Claude blames drugs and the system for his son's death.
He told CBC News that he took his son for detox treatment in Calgary three times, but ended up waiting for hours only to be told there was no room.
The government doesn't supply the money needed to help addicts and they've got no place to go, he said.
Regimbald plans to start a campaign to help people in need.
"It's too bad I [had] to wait for my son to die to start it, but … I will go to Ottawa if I have to," he said.
Regimbald plans to lobby the government to help drug addicts turn their lives around before it's too late.
Calgary police continue to investigate Regimbald's death. They believe Regimbald was involved in the drug trade and his death was not a random act of violence.

Wow, what a tragedy.
I feel sad for this father who obviously regrets the loss of his son. I'm not so sure that the system can be blamed here. Although it is unfortunate that his son was unable to get into detox, there is really no guarentees that even that would have saved his life. Drugs and the lifestyle that accompanies them are risky business. Many who enter detox programs do so repeatedly, and many never recover from their addictions. The further into the drug scene you are in, the harder it is to get out.
I have to wonder if it wouldn't be more profitable for this father to spend his time teaching others of the tragic consequences of a drug lifestyle, and try to prevent others from ever getting involved in the first place!
Still, my heart goes out to him.
