I've been listening to Susan Aglukark's albums a lot lately. I am very impressed with her music. As an artist, she doesn't have amazingly strong vocals. Her music isn't that sophisticated either. Her lyrics are simple.
And that is just it. She is incredibly simple in every aspect of her music and message, which in my opinion is just the right prescription for the young people that she is aiming her music and message at. Mostly, she is singing songs to her native Inuit people, but I am sure all young people can relate to what she is saying.
But the young Inuit people surely benefit from the simple, beautiful music and message of Susan Aglukark. Especially growing up in an ever complicated environment, in which they are more and more uncertain of their identity, place in this world, and value as a people. Common struggles include abuse (physical and sexual), alcohol, drugs, suicide.....all the same struggles that any other youth experience with the added weight of being different from much of the rest of the world.
Susan Aglukark brings a beautiful message of love and hope to these people. Songs that address all of the very difficult issues that they face with a simple, thoughtful, loving message. Songs that encourage, inspire, and teach. Songs that celebrate the rich tradition and history of these great people.
For this reason I am very impressed with the beautiful heart.....and the beautiful music and message of Susan Aglukark. It's in her simplicity that her wisdom is found. I find her music more than just pleasant to listen to, but am deeply encouraged that someone out there is speeking a message that really needs to be heard.
Oh, and by the way, say a prayer for the Inuit people.
