A potpourri of topics this past week, many provided by Lara’s fan sites.
Lara’s sole direct interaction with fans was her post on Instagram of her picture at
with the following comment, “Sending you lots of beautiful thoughts on this Sunday day...love you
💋💋💋”. A good way to start this News Update
Lara did have another more indirect interaction: Les Papillons Blancs FB site noted that Lara donated a gold record to Télévie, the Belgian telethon which took place this past weekend. Numerous other big name artists did so as well. The relevant pictures of many of them can be found at () – Lara’s is the 10th picture. The LPB site noted that the donation was from Lara’s personal collection – the ‘Lara Fabian Live’ gold record - not something produced by the record company for the occasion. It looks like it brought in some 100 euros ($117).
[For those who don’t know, gold records are not necessarily made with the actual record; the record companies just put gold plating on any record they happen to have laying around (e.g., the discussion at www.reddit.com/r/vinyl/comments/5j1lm3/do_the_gold_and_platinum_records_awarded_to/). That site mentions a story about members of the Grateful Dead spinning one of their gold records. Turned out to be a Johnny Cash record, which they found appropriate ].
Not surprisingly, the Star Academie is a finalist for the public “Prix Gemeaux” in Quebec, as can be seen at
www.facebook.com/staracademietva/photos/a.361601375242829/697382174998079/
The deadline for voting for it is passed; one would have to say if it doesn’t win, that will be a big upset.
In other Star Academie news, auditions are continuing to go on, and a very endearing video of the process for ‘Emma’ can be found at
www.facebook.com/staracademietva/videos/180002587596165/
The surprise was that the bus that went to pick her up had Meghan Oak , Lunou Zucchini and Émile Roy on board – to give her encouragement (and it makes for a great video!).
The Lara Fabian Connecting People site posted a list of songs that they say could be used “for evenings by the window with a cup of cocoa, watching the falling autumn leaves or meditations” (a situation most likely already to be happening in some parts of Russia by this time of year). The list is as follows:
Mais la vie ...(Maurane)
Il venait d'avoir dix-huit ans (Dalida)
Tango
Sola otra vez
Je vais revoir l'hiver
Il ne manquait que toi
Kalpataru
Quе j'étais bellе
Demain n’existe pas
A very eclectic selection; the only thing they really have in common is that one is very unlikely to hear Lara sing any of them on her upcoming tour. She does not exploit her catalog to nearly the extent that most other singers do, seeming to feel that she has to give the audience what they expect, which are her greatest hits (plus songs from any new album she’s promoting). There are many other worthy sings, including a number on this list, which could become fan favorites if only they were given time in the spotlight…
The Lara Fabian multimedia site provides numerous improved audios and videos of live performances of songs Lara has done, and in this past week alone they’ve added some 30 more. It’s an invaluable resource, and can be found at
www.youtube.com/user/larafabiannewsbr/videos
And so, continuing with that theme, interesting photo(s)/video(s) of the week:
The Lara Fabian Connecting People site noted that September is the anniversary month of the release of the Russian version of the Mademoiselle Zhivago CD (in 2010); the film by the same name was made available on youtube in 2013. It was also noted that Igor Krutoy has uploaded a 1080p version of the movie to his website, which can be seen at
vk.com/lf_cp?z=video-121236_456242126%2F1b09890d279e4f33db%2Fpl_post_-121236_240421
They provided some interesting facts, including:
** Mademoiselle Zhivago" is the most expensive musical project produced in the CIS.
** Lara, entering the set of the short story "Lullaby", which reminded the viewer of the events of World War II, burst into tears.
** The shooting of the final winter scene of the short story "The Same Karenins" took place on hot August days.
** When filming the short story "Moma", the director used the "staging" method, according to which only 15 actors out of 70 knew what was going to happen, the rest of the people perceived the event as it occurred. While this ‘chapter’ was shown on the big screen in Kiev, it was cut from the YouTube version of the film due to the disagreement between Lara and the director Alan Badoev.
**For those of you who never saw the “Moma” clip, it’s available at
vk.com/wall-121236_240415?z=video-121236_456241059%2Fa765787c0b452c6bfc%2Fpl_post_-121236_240435
Warning: it’s quite violent.
Without rehashing the whole controversy that prevented this film from being shown at Cannes and any of the other festivals they had imagined, or ever released in movie theatres, here’s a brief summary of the two ‘sides’:
**Lara felt the movie was too dark, too violent, and she didn’t want her name and image associated with such negative vibrations. To her, love was the only real force in the world, and that’s what she wanted to promulgate.
**Alan Badoev said that these negative things are happening in the world, and the only way they will be ended is to make people fully aware of how awful they are. Otherwise, people will just look away and allow them to persist.
**He (and others) also said that Lara had the script ahead of time, filmed all these scenes, and she had to know what she was doing. To then complain afterwards when they were just showing what the camera recorded was arbitrary and unfair [especially given all the money and time that went into it – there were six months preparation].
**Lara said that some of the worst scenes were never shown to her, and a body double was used. In addition, as a first time actor, she went along with what the director was asking, trusting that he knew what he was doing. [It turned out she was right – only what he knew to do was not in alignment with what she desired].
Some pictures associated with the movie (which Lara renamed ‘music videos’) are available at
vk.com/wall-121236_240415?z=photo-121236_456248917%2Fwall-121236_240415
On the complete other side of the spectrum, Lara the Ring Fabian added English subtitles to the ‘Hep Taxi’ interview from Brussels in 2009, available at
www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHpV57cc2iw
Here, ‘love’ is the prime topic, and Lara gives a very clear explanation of how important it is to her in her life. Ironic that the Mademoiselle Zhivago project was her next project.
Finally, the Lara Fabian Connecting People site also noted that there was a commemorative concert for Johnny Hallyday this past week in Paris. While Lara obviously wasn’t present, the site did repost some canonical pictures of Lara with Johnny, at
vk.com/lf_cp?z=photo-121236_456242499%2Fwall-121236_240408
and the classic video of their duet of “Requiem pour un fou” at the Stade de France in 1998, at
vk.com/lf_cp?z=video-121236_456241936%2F5074dce1626efb3b0b%2Fpl_wall_-121236
Nothing obvious on Lara’s public schedule for the upcoming week, but as she is now ‘out and about’, it’s certainly possible she will pop up somewhere, either with Star Academie or her own music related business. Have a good, safe week everybody.
