With the passing of most of the active promotion for the new album, and of the family concerns that dominated the past few weeks, La Voix became the main focus of activity for Lara’s fans. We’ll start with the show itself, the first of the “Songs of battle” (Chants de Bataille). The way it works is that the each judge chooses five members of their team who automatically go on to the ‘Live’ shows starting the next week. Then the remaining, generally three members, each sing a song, and the judge chooses among them. [Again, we're one week behind in our discussion]. Here are some ‘highlights’:
** Remember we noted last week that Lara had only 7 team members? Well, it was (sort of) explained that one candidate who had lost in the ‘duels’ had been ‘stolen/rescued’ by Lara, and then had gone on to the 'Chants de Bataille' activity. One assumes it was the candidate whom it turned out had been convicted of a crime, and so edited out of earlier shows. He had to be edited out of this one as well – fortunately he wasn’t chosen by Lara to automatically go on, and then he didn’t win the subsequent competition. So the show only presented two of Lara’s candidates.
**Those two were Frederique Germain and Tony Crow. Frederique was the winner, although Tony Crow did a surprisingly good interpretation (for a young person) of a Jacques Brel song (Lara called Tony an ‘old soul’). Frederique is clearly a ‘winner’, and probably should have gotten a free pass.
**Free passes went to both Marianne Mathieu and Genevieve Jodoin, a decision which was treated with some suspense, even though when Lara couldn’t choose between them during their duel, it was announced they would both have to go to the ‘Directs’ (Live).
** Each of the teams does an ensemble song at the end; Lara and her team presented “Je te le donne” which Lara said was the next best thing one could say to someone, right behind ‘I Love You’. The performance was truly excellent! – It would be a shame if it is not made widely available.
**Julien Clerc was the guest judge who worked with the other judges in training the competitors (he’s actually a judge on the French version of the show, called ironically “The Voice”). Whereas he seemed pretty much at ease with the other three, his interactions with Lara seemed a bit awkward – Lara asked him to feed her information, adding to what she was doing. He said that he had known her for a long time, though he hadn’t actually seen much of her.
**It was clear from their choices that, not surprisingly, each judge preferred a team of singers who sing like them. For example, Eric gave free passes to all the rough, coarse-voiced singers, and had the singers with good voices compete for the final spot. [He chose Tommy Charles for his unique ‘vocal signature’ – Eric said he loved his base voice – although Laura Elena Gonzalez was once again quite outstanding]. Alex chose singers with pleasant, nondescript voices, like his own, and ended up picking Gabriel Cyr over the two female singers.
**This was also quite clear from the ‘group songs’ for each team. Lara’s team, not surprisingly, seemed to have the best voices, though Marc’s were quite good as well.
**Marc’s competition featured Christine Toca whom he took from Lara after she chose Samantha Neves during the duels. Christine won a tough battle against two other very good candidates; it was clear even during the rehearsals that both Marc and Julien were quite taken with her. She might well be one of the finalists.

Lara’s take on it was: “What to say…If it isn’t THANK YOU…so sublime…”
In other La Voix news, the 24 finalists who are moving onto the ‘Direct’ shows, along with the team of Musicor, are featured on an album of the songs that have marked their journey on the show. The album is available at many locations, and Lara put a link to it on her FB site,

She discussed her current favorite artists (Panic! at the Disco), being a coach in La Voix in Quebec (rather than in Belgium or France), the new album, and that her favorite country is Quebec, and then also Belgium.
The album has dropped 8 places to #24 in Belgium, dropped 15 places to #79 in France. In Quebec, however, it is staying high, at #7. The disparity is likely related to the amount of publicity Lara is getting in the various countries, something she was well aware of when she devoted the ’17 days’ to her European venture, realizing there would be little more she could do. The album in Belgium and Paris will have to sink or swim on its own. [IMHO, what would help it is to release ‘Alien’ as the next single; especially with the weather getting warmer, it has all the trappings of a ‘summer-time’ hit].
Lara was interviewed about the list of her desires in “Le Parisien Magazine”. Here’s the translation:
-----------------------------------------
Lara Fabian “I adore paradoxes, it is the essence of life”
The Belgian singer, who will begin in 2020 a grand tour, would love to discover Japan, to sort through her wardrobes and to reawaken the animal which is in her!
Like Johnny Hallyday, with whom she sang 'Requiem pour un fou' in 1998 at the Stade de France, Lara Fabian could affirm that her country, it is love. This sentiment irrigates all her discography, and including Papillon, her 14th studio album released February 9th. In 2020 the Belgian singer will celebrate her 50th birthday with a grand tour.
Attend the Grand Ballets of Montreal.
“As soon as I will no longer have more professional obligation, I will take a subscription and I will go see all the shows given by this company. These bodies which defy the laws of gravity and suspend time move me to the highest point.”
To Found a School of Singing
“I dream of creating an itinerant school where the professors teach technique but also how to express, along with a song, that which one is. And how to preserve oneself from notoriety. It is so magical to transmit to the youth a key that we ourselves have experienced and to see their eyes light up.”
To Make Gluten-Free Desserts
“Two years ago I discovered that I was intolerant to gluten. I almost never eat desserts anymore because without this component, their texture is less light. I would like to learn how to make some and find the same pleasure with a strawberry or a black forest.”
To Lighten the Cupboards
“One day, you realize that your closets are full and you end up forgetting what you own. From now on, I only keep things that I need or that bring me joy. Like the chiseled Baccarat glasses that I bought with my first royalty check.”
To Pierce the Mystery of Atlantis
“It is not known if this island engulfed to punish its inhabitants for their vanity really exists. It would be good to know more about this subject. One could learn of past errors and thus preserve humanity.”
To Sing a Duo with Maitre Gims
“He releases something very solar. Our duo might surprise some, but why not? I adore paradoxes, it is the essence of life.”
To Play a Comedy with Mathilde Seigner
“For a long time I’ve had the fear of showing the clown that I am. Today, I would love to play in a comedy with Mathilde Seigner, for example. I adore her. I believe that we would be capable of making laughter, both of us!”
To Live a Month in Japan
“We are rarely taught that to eat well and nurture benevolent thoughts is 80% of our health. To my eyes, this country is the symbol of this wisdom. If I could, I would pass there a full month with my husband, my best friend and our children together.”
To Let Go
“I have begun hatha yoga, a traditional practice but in a form more zen and softer. By force of intellectualizing, we extinguish the animal in us. While we can also be emotional! Yoga is a space where I hope to find serenity.”

Lara is now fully into the ‘live’ portion of La Voix, which means it demands her presence full-time. [The results from the first live show are in, but we’re delaying discussing them until next week]. We can expect the show will be taking up most of her time and energy for the next several weeks.
Lastly, although this doesn’t concern Lara directly, we must acknowledge the tragic fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Our deepest sympathies for the French, first of all, but really for all humanity.
