Lara continued the promotion of her new album the past week, with numerous television and radio shows, as well as interviews in the press. A good summary of the TV and radio shows is available on tmaj00’s excellent site at:
www.larafabiannews.blogger.com.br/index.html
It also provides either the downloads themselves or links to where the downloads are available. [On the same site, it is noted that Lara’s live duet with Mario Frangoulis of “So In Love” has just been released on the album “Mario and Friends” Vol.2. It is available for download there as well…].
Of particular recent note, is the show "Les années bonheur" presented by Patrick Sébastien that aired last night on France 2. Lara apparently did an amazing live version of “Gottingen” (despite having a throat infection). The video is not yet available; it has been requested on NABBOX, and will hopefully show up there shortly.
There also have been numerous journal articles; different ones are available in different locations, including tmaj00’s site. There is now a recent ‘press’ section on the welcoming page of the official site, which had 3 articles as of last look. In addition, one can find more press interviews in the ‘press’ section at:
lararoch.free.fr/Lara/Lara_p2009.htm
The interview Lara gave with Chef de femmes d’aujourd’hui, included many pictures. These are available at:
www.femmesdaujourdhui.be/femmes/loisirs_-lara-fabian-toutes-les-femmes-en-moi-interview-photos.html
Lara also put a new message on her website; tmaj00 provides an English translation on his site, which the official site seems too busy to do (it also hasn’t listed a number of Lara’s recent appearances, or some of the upcoming concerts for which tickets are already available).
The gist of these many sources of information is summarized below:
1)Lara was told by Pascal Negre that her ‘hiding’ her voice was only providing proof that the critics who said she was singing too strongly were right – that got her to change course. She has noted that the un-released version from last October will see the light of day at some point.
2)She fully expected the criticism she’s been getting about the new album (more on that later), and there have always been a number of people who never liked her.
3)EWIM (Every Woman in Me) is ready and will be made available soon. She has called it ‘acoustic’, but apparently it is done in “piano-voice” (simply Lara and a pianist – we can guess who!). As noted previously it will includes a songs sung by Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Barbra Streisand, etc. Streisand is returning the favor, apparently singing “Broken Vow” on her world tour.
4)Lara’s coming tour is being staged by Gerard, and will have more theatricality. It will in effect tell a story of her life (a la TLFM), not up to the present but to when she became a real singer. It will have ‘a thousand pictures’, including perhaps having 3D images projected on stage (i.e., holograms). It has been suggested that Lara might wear disguises to honor the various singers she’s imbibed over the years. She will sing songs from both TLFM and EWIM, as well as her classics (Je t’aime, J’y crois encore, Tout, etc.).
5)Concerning the new album: all the songs were in the public domain, so she didn’t have to get any one’s permission to use them. Despite the public release of her ‘letters’ to the singers, none of them has responded to her, although several (France Gall, Maurane] called when they found out she was using one of their songs. Both were quite happy, but also quite surprised at which songs she chose of theirs! And she’s not worried about her public’s reaction to this ‘different’ release – they’ve been with her for 15 years, though she does think it will appeal more to women of her age who heard these singers growing up, or from their mothers. [The interviewer also noted that the letter to Dalida had implied that Lara, too, had contemplated suicide, a fact Lara again mentioned was behind the song “Parce que tu pars” – she has said this before.]
6)Lara repeated that an album of original songs has already been written; on the longer term, she said she would like to do an album with a philharmonic orchestra, that she sees that as the next step for her (in the mode of film music). [No mention here of the Italian album, or even the Italian version of TLFM…]
The new album has been receiving somewhat negative reviews in the press; these are not directly concerned with her singing, but with the music on the album, and with Lara’s interpretations. Lara doesn’t seem to be overly concerned by it, and past history shows that there is not much relationship between record sales and record reviews in her case; e.g., “Nue” which sold ~1 million copies got some mediocre reviews, while “Neuf”, which sold considerably less, got excellent reviews. And indeed, TLFM is selling well; in France it is #1 at Virgin Megastores, #4 at amazon.fr., #7 at alapage.com, and #10 at FNAC, and 21st at cultura.com. I’ll have additional comments on the reviews of this album in the “Reviews of TLFM” thread.
This coming week Lara spends in Moscow, with concerts on June 1,2,4,5 and 6 (all in the same “Operetta” theatre). On June 3, she is having an autograph session. She will apparently be singing songs from the new album – good chance to get in an out-of-town rehearsal! Hopefully, videos/audios of these songs will be made available by those lucky enough to see them, as they have for some of her past Moscow shows. When she returns additional publicity events are in store, including the release of her interview with “Platine” and some additional TV shows.
