Since I have previously reviewed “Pure”, I will take a different approach this time. Rather than give my opinion of each song’s lyrics and melodies, I will try to relate them to Lara’s career according to Paula. Thanks to DavidR for the translations.
Tout – All
This is one of Lara’s big concert songs. It’s a great song to sing along with and really gets an audience participating in Lara’s concerts. Lara has sung “Tout” in many different ways. From full power in “Pure”, to a slower acoustical version in “En Toute Inimite” to a Bossa Nova version in “Un Regard 9”. This song is so universal that it works equally as well any way Lara sings it. She always sings “Tout” with such emotion and passion. It’s a favorite of mine for its completeness. A great duet of “Tout” was with Marc-Andre Niquet from Star Academy in 2004.
J’ai Zappe – I’m Zapping Away
“J’ai Zappe” is a song about a mixed up world. The sun is brilliant but it is cold, there are whirlwinds, disinformation and all is mixed up. There’s war, no one listens and “all is awry”. My favorite performance of this song is from Annees Tubes from 1999. As usual Lara sings with much emotion. It seems her body language is saying, what the heck is going on? At the end she falls to her knees. Another good performance of “J’ai Zappe”, is from the Molson Center concert from 1997.
La Difference – The Difference
A great song with a strong social meaning, love is love. It doesn’t matter whether the love is between two men, two women or a man and a women – love is love. I really enjoyed Lara’s performance of “La Difference” from her “Live” concert DVD from 2001. It was nice to see Lara walking through the audience and how everyone just wanted to reach out and touch her. I heard she was only able to do that in two concerts. During the second one the bodyguards had trouble holding back the people. My second favorite performance of “La Difference” is the duet she did with Patrick Fiori. There were certainly sparks flying.
Humana – Humanity
This is another of Lara’s favorite concert songs that gets everyone singing along with her. Lara released another version of “Humana” with an African sound on an album called Akapela in 2005. My favorite performance is from the “Live” concert DVD from 2001. Lara does some dancing and I like Kim Richardson’s participation.
Urgent Desir – Urgent Desire
Not only is this my favorite song from Pure, but it’s one of my top ten favorite Lara songs of all time. She starts singing “Urgernt Desir” so sweetly and lets it build. I love the way she whispers “je t’aime”. I really like the violin solo. The Molson Center concert from 1997 was a great performance of “Urgent Desir”. Another good one is from the Brussels concert from 1998 where Lara sang playful to guitarist Remy Melo.
Les Amoureux De L’an – The Lovers Of The Year 2000.
This is one of the songs I like least from “Pure”. The message is clear – in the world of computers/internet the human touch is lost. I really liked her performance from the Brussels concert 1998 and the Molson Center concert 1997 was good also.
Ici – Here
“Ici" is my least favorite song on “Pure. If was written by Lara and Daniel Seff. Lara sings the song very well and with a lot of feeling. I find the song uninspiring and boring. Lara performed a duet of “Ici” with Daniel Seff on Canadian TV in 1997.
Alléliua - Hallelujah
Again this song was written by Lara, Rick Allison and Daniel Seff. Although it’s a lot more upbeat than “Ici" and I like it better, I much prefer Lara’s collaborations with Daniel Lavoie (“Urgent Desir” and “Je Suis Mon Coeur”) or Walter Afanasieff (“You’re Not From Here”, “You Are My Heart”, “Broken Vow” and “Walk Away”). Lara uses “Alleliua” in many of her concerts. A nice performance is from the “Live” DVD from 2001.
Je T’aime – I Love You
In my first review I talked about all the performances in which others sing this song or “On T’aime” to Lara. It happened in the Nimes concert in 2000, on a show called Star A Domicle in 2002, Serge Lama sang it to Lara on the TV show Chanson no 1 in 2003 and Lara sang a duet with the audience in the “Live” DVD in 2001. My favorite performance is from the World Music Awards in Monaco in 1999 where Lara won her first WMA award for best selling Belgium artist. I also feel this performance is one of Lara’s best ever. She sang “Je T’aime” with such power and emotion. She had tears in her eyes. The audience gave her a standing ovation half way through the song. I also like the rendition from “En Toute Intimite” from 2003. It’s a more powered down version but still beautiful. “Je T’aime” is one of my favorite songs and I love to sing along with Lara.
Je T’appartiens – I Belong To You
This is such a pretty song. Again it’s one of my favorites. Lara sings it beautifully. I love her performance from the Brussels concert 1998. Lara sat on stairs surrounded by three guitarists. It was very simple but nice. Lara wrote this song with Janey Clewer who also co-wrote “Bambina” with her.
Peredere L’amore – To Lose Love
During Lara’s Brussels concert 1998, as she was getting ready to sing “Peredere L’amore”, all was quiet and she was looking very serious. All of a sudden someone yelled from the audience ,extremely loud, “Lara je t’aime”. Lara lost her concentration and started to laugh. She actually saw who yell the words, of love, and pointed him out. Being the pro she is, Lara went on to give a wonderful performance of the song. Another nice performance was from “From Lara With Love”. She also did a duet with Dan Bigras in 1997 on one of his TV specials.
“Pure” is a great album and launched Lara into stardom.
