There are more jobs in Calgary than people working. I work at a pub and we only have 2 dishwashers 5 nights a week we have cooks taking over that position and 2 days a week we have cooks acting as dishwashers. Last night, the supervisor and another cook were there till 4:30am finishing up (usually the kitchen staff are there at 2am at the latest).
Half the stores you walk by have Help Wanted signs. Yes, there are that many jobs and it's causing problams because retail stores can't pay people that much of the good customer service people aren't there anymore and customer service can be quite bad in other stores. There are fast food places that are only open till 6pm because they have no one to work evenings.
Basicly if you want a job you can get a job, unless you have a terrible work record.

Very interesting.
Outside of Calgary, what is the job situation like? In other words, why are people willing to move to Calgary for a job? I realize that there are a lot of jobs there, but does that also mean that there are NOT jobs outside of Calgary? Are people picking up and leaving behind old jobs for new ones in Calgary?

Especially in the Maritimes (Atlantic Canada) there are lots of people unemployed. Alot of places there are very few job openings. My hometown was thought to be a booming town in Ontario yet I couldn't get even an entry level job. Most of the people coming to Calgary are singles that are unemployed. Alot of university grads are coming to Calgary because it's easier to find a job.

Okay, now it all makes sense to me. I was really struggling with the idea that people were leaving their homes and jobs to come to Calgary to find the jobs that they are offering there. But it sounds like people are coming to Calgary in search of work that they do not currently have.
Well, I hope that the situation is able to right itself soon and the people can find places to live so that they can stay in Calgary where there is work. And I hope that the businesses do not suffer too much in relation to customer service until the problem is solved.
