Jim, when I was a young boy full of excitement for John Wayne and Clint Eastwood movies, I dreamed of being a cowboy and rounding up all the bad guys in town! My grandmother, may she rest in peace, bought me a pair of cowboy boots and hat, a toy holster and guns! I was way too cool! But, I have to admit that there was a price to pay for being cool.....the cowboy boots gave me terrible blisters on my feet! LOL It's not easy being a cowboy!
Let me just say this about your observations regarding this discussion, Jim. You shared them with me after dinner before the Lara concert in the lounge (while we were waiting for everyone else to fix themselves up). I thought your comments were brilliant then, and I think they are brilliant now. There is no doubt in my mind that what you are saying is absolutely correct.
As far as your question about what a dramatic comedy is, well, let me see.....I would say that Steve Martin's "The Jerk" was a comedy, filled with silliness and laugh out loud humor. But Steve Martin's "Father Of The Bride" films (1 and 2) were more along the lines of dramatic comedy, where there was plenty of good natured humor intermixed with a much more dramatic storyline. Probably a poor example, but there you go.
I appreciate your observations, Jim! Please keep them coming! They are brilliant!

i find this discussion fascinating. i think Sandra Bullock's movie "While you were sleeping" could be considered a dramatic comedy (a.k.a. dramedy) -- you can't help laughing while crying at the same time (or vice versa).
i, too, think Lara is ready to break out of her "commercial" persona and do something that some of her fans probably won't like much. she is a poet and like all true poets, they risk being misunderstood or not understood at all because they can be so deep and mysterious that most people can't appreciate. a lot of people believe Leonard Cohen is a great poet but i admit that i cannot understand his poetry sometimes; maybe my mind is just too small to appreciate his words and images. i hope Lara doesn't become that deep! :-)
as for Lara signing with a "big Hollywood studio", i don't think she needs to compromise herself in order to sign with them. i think some studios actually allow their artists a lot of freedom, like Miramax or Lions Gate. but maybe those are not "big" enough"? anyway, i don't really care much how Lara gets introduced to the north american mainstream. as long as people know of her, they can learn about her afterwards. like i said before, i think she's ready to do things some of her fans might not like, including going Hollywood.
an artist that i really admire is Madonna. in spite of all the criticisms she has faced throughout her career, she continues to grow and reinvent herself, sometimes in quite surprising fashion. she's a pretty good songwriter too. i hope Lara can be as strong and bold as Madonna.

I totally agree with you Jim that Lara will do well as a screen writer and actress. Perhaps one day she will become a director and producer. After all her role model is Barbra Streisand.
I think the key to success in business is to diversify. As we have seen with most singers, their careers have an end life. It is only a few extraordinary artists who can endure. Some might try acting, others go into fashion etc. The way Lara interprets a song is very similar to acting. The next logical step for her would be in films. Let's not forget that Gerard is a director so I am sure Lara is being developed as we speak.
I agree with you Lib about Madonna. I too like her a lot. I just heard on the news this week that her "Confessions On A Dance Floor" tour broke all kinds of records. I just hope Lara's film career turns out better than Madonna's. She has had a lot of flops.

Madonna is not a great singer or a very good actress, but she's not afraid to try anything and she's certainly not afraid to fail either. with Lara's immense talent in both singing and acting, all she needs is the boldness and tenacity that Madonna has in spades. imagine what she could achieve....
