The big news this past week was the finale of La Voix – and since it’s clearly the dominant issue, we will review both the semi-finals and the finals in this News Update. Starting with the semi-finals:
**Lara’s two contestants were Samantha Neves and Genevieve Jodoin, both of whom Lara, in her past comments, indicated she felt strongly about. However, the rules for the semi-finals (and finals) are that only the public votes, saving Lara from having to make a choice.
**Samantha sang a Celine Dion song (written by Jean-Jaques Goldman) entitled “Vole”. A very emotional song, and Lara in her remarks at the end, indicated that her superb registry is not just vocal but also emotional.
**Genevieve snag “Ne me quitte pas”, a Jacques Brel song with a strong ending, but they had a problem. The song was too long, and they had to cut some of the lyrics out, which seemed like sacrilege, in order to keep the ending. Lara’s guest helper was Jean-Pierre Ferland, and at the end of this song, he congratulated Lara, saying you have great taste for having picked her. At which point the host once again reminded everyone that Genevieve almost wasn’t here, when Lara could not make a choice between her and Marianne back in the ‘duels’. [To be fair they both were excellent].
**The audience vote was Genevieve 69% and Samantha 31%. Both were good, but this seemed like the right decision.
**Marc’s two candidates were Rick Pagano and Rafelle Roy. You may remember that in previous shows, Rick’s grandmother came up on stage to congratulate him when he won. The host joked that the grandmother was being restrained by three bodyguards in the back of the theater. Rick did his usual, very cool rock performance, and Rafaelle sung with her usual vocal mastery.
**In a surprise (to me), Rafaelle won with 60% of the vote. This was one of the few times (to this point) that vocal quality really seemed to matter. One comment made about Rafaelle was how wonderful a person she is, and how nice she was to the other candidates. That point will arise once again later in this Update.
**Alex’s two candidates were Gabriel Cyr (who was convinced to play the guitar during his song) and Vincent Chouinard, who as usual played the piano, this time to a song by Jean-Pierre Ferland – and he was right there, looking at him. Everybody agreed that was a courageous thing to do! Interestingly, after his song, the comments were about how well he played the piano.
**In what was not a surprise, Vincent won with 80% of the public vote. He was by far the more accomplished performer.
**Eric’s candidates were Jacques Comeau and Colin Moore. Jacques sung “L’essential” about how “to be loved” is the essential thing. Given the obvious love that Jacques’ family has for him – his daughter in particular – Eric said that this was the perfect song, since it’s clear that his family is the essential thing for him. Garou said it best, when he indicated that Jacques had maintained a youthfulness while acquiring the wisdom from a lot of baggage in life.
**Colin Moore sand “Tue moi” – it was the second straight week that he had sung a song in French, and last week was the first time he had ever sung in French in public (his mother tongue is English). This was a brave move, and duly noted by the judges. It was an energetic performance, and Colin won with 72% of the vote.
**Before the final judge’s score, it was the turn of Lara’s team to get to sing with her, and they did a rendition of “Par Amour”, along with the two ‘dancers’ who performed on her video of that song. In introducing it, the host promised the audience an amazing performance, and that it was. In some ways, this was the highlight of the show. Lara left the TVA link to the video of it on her website, but outside of Canada it is useless (as many, many people pointed out). She likely has little influence on that policy (but, again, see later in this Update).
**It was announced that the finalists, judges, and some special guests would be performing a special La Voix show in Quebec from August 14-31 and in Montreal from Sept. 4-8. That presumably includes Lara, but it remains to be seen how many of those dates she actually is at. Her ’50 Tour’ is in New York in mid-September, and she undoubtedly has to prepare for it.
So then it was on to the finals. Lara left a picture of her with Genevieve from the “first of the last rehearsals” for her song, at
www.facebook.com/larafabianofficial/photos/a.622966977744803/2759738177400995/?type=3&theater
The 'Lara Fabian est ton autre' FB site made the program available on their Facebook site, at
www.facebook.com/larafabiantonautre/videos/581633638991855/
**In a departure from the previous years, no longer were the candidates to sing a song written for them by their coach. Instead, they got to choose their song. In addition, they used the other (generally) 5 team members who participated in the ‘live’ shows from their coach’s team to act as a chorus.
**Colin Moore (from Eric’s team) sang “Crazy”, the Aerosmith song, with a lot of energy and better vocal prowess than he has exhibited previously. It began the program and energized the audience, who gave him a great reception.
**Rafaelle (from Marc’s team) used her wonderful voice on the Beatles’ “Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight”, showing her great range and vocal dexterity. Marc once again complimented her as being an exceptional person with a big heart.
**Vincent Chouinart (from Alex’s team) sang “I Can’t Make You Love Me”, showing his usual prowess on the piano, and a fine vocal performance.
**Finally, Genevieve Jodoin from Lara’s team sang a sophisticated song “Pendant que”, which not only had subtlety but also, especially at the end, great power.
**Lara in her comments did everything she could for Genevieve. Not only did she note the combination of nuance and power in the presentation, she said that the shades of her vocal tones were the best she has ever heard in all her life! She also indicated that she is a “true Quebec singer”, that she carries the Quebec (vocal) DNA, and that there are very few singers from Quebec as good as her. [Perhaps Lara was also, not so subtly, referring to the fact that Genevieve was the only finalist this evening to sing in French, and with a song by a Quebec composer, Gilles Vigneault].
**And in the voting … Genevieve won!!!! – with 47% of the vote (Colin was second with 28%, Rafaelle had 19% and Vincent 6%). Incredibly, despite all that took place over the course of the 13 weeks, a true vocal master actually won La Voix, and with a sophisticated song at that. [Reading the comments afterwards, the points Lara made about ‘Quebec’ could well have contributed to this victory].
**Lara of course was exceedingly happy. When the announcement was made Lara had this great big smile; Genevieve put her hand to her head, possibly overcome. But the greatest joy was exhibited by her competitor Rafaelle, who immediately leapt in the air with a big smile on her face – clearly, that instantaneous reaction is indicative of what a wonderful person she is, as everybody has said.
**Genevieve eventually recovered, somewhat, to express her thanks to the audience and she was then joined on stage by her three children (!!!) [you may remember, she apologized to them for having been away from them so long].
Lara put the following picture on her FB site, at

In the interview Lara repeats her comment about Genevieve having “Quebec DNA”. Lara notes how ‘solid’ she is, how she is a mother, and has everything in its place. [In the very beginning, you can also see Rafaelle Roy’s immediate wonderful reaction to the announcement of the winner].
As could have been obvious by her professionalism, Genevieve did not ‘come out of nowhere’. She’s 41 years old, and has been singing professionally for quite some time. When she participated in the blind auditions, there was an article about her at (https://www.tvanouvelles.ca/2019/03/03/la-voix-un-nouveau-depart-pour-genevieve-jodoin). Here’s the translation:
--------------------------------------------------
"La Voix": a new start for Geneviève Jodoin
Five years after having changed her life by going to open an inn in Charlevoix, Geneviève Jodoin decided to return to the front of the stage by participating in the fourth round of blind auditions of "La Voix", Sunday evening on TVA.
On leaving to settle in Isle-aux-Coudres, the artist did not really think to put an end to her career. "When I left Montreal, I did not leave music. I just wanted to do another project, something different. I went to open a small inn with the goal of bringing culture to Charlevoix, bring artists, offer entertainment. I continued to sing there, but it seems like for the people of Montreal, it's like I'm gone. ‘La Voix’ is a good way for me to remind everyone that I exist."
If she wanted to move towards calm, it's above all for her children. "My desire to live in Charlevoix was mainly to give my children the opportunity to live close to nature and get closer to their roots. I, too, needed to change and live new things. It did me a lot of good. In addition, the people of Charlevoix are grateful because we brought artists and music to this part of the country. I'm very proud of what we did there, my chum and I."
In the dark
Former singer of the show "Belle et Bum", Geneviève Jodoin worked a lot in television. "I really enjoyed working on this show, I stayed there for seven years. In the meantime, I have also made three albums. I do not have bitterness in life. I always wanted to do things my way, all alone. I never had a big team around me for the release of my albums. "
If we did not see her on the screen, she continued to work in the shadows. "I even worked on the "La Voix" team on seasons 2, 3 and 4. I was a vocal coach for the candidates to work on the live numbers with the invited artists."
Old acquaintances
Of course, Geneviève Jodoin knew the coaches by reputation or to have worked with them. Faced with four, her choice was still quick. "I chose Lara Fabian, because she is infinitely sweet. She was my singing teacher without knowing it when I was a teenager. I have already recorded an album with her, a long time ago. She's a technician. She also has a way of saying things so poetically. When I listen to her, I feel like I hear a poet. It's really a pleasure to work with her."
Although Genevieve is a good singer with a lot of experience, she thinks her coach can make a difference for her. "Lara is a voice technician. I know she can help me go even further on very technical things. The small comments she gives are relevant. She has a keen ear, I honestly think she was the best coach for me."
-------------------------------------------------
A lot of these comments proved prescient, while some can now be seen to be ironic. It turns out that it certainly was a good way to remind people in Montreal that she exists. And in contrast to her previous experience, she now definitely will have a big team around her. All this made possible when Lara could not choose between her and Marianne, and La Voix allowed them both to go on…it was fate!
**Another highlight of the show was the medley of songs that Lara and some of the candidates from La Voix sang with Michael Bolton: ”How Am I Supposed to Live Without You”; “When A Man Loves a Woman”; and “How Can We Be Lovers”.
For some reason, Lara was allowed to (or took the liberty to) put this on her FB site, at
www.facebook.com/larafabianofficial/videos/419570752155480/
As can be noted, and as was commented on frequently on the La Voix FB site, Michael Bolton did not smile once during the performance or seem to have any personal interaction with anyone during that medley, despite Lara’s attempts to engage. [Some suggested Botox might be playing a role, concerning the smile at least ]. Nevertheless, he sang quite well. [One can also notice Lara’s dress, which was guaranteed to get attention]. One can see clearly his habitual expression in the following picture,
www.facebook.com/magazine7Jours/photos/a.722286547798855/2693024497391707/?type=3&theater
However, in the interview at the end he did crack a smile, and said it was so much fun. He added that the young people on stage singing with him were great singers, that there was so much passion that he was honored to be part of it. He also had some nice words to say about Lara, and hoped they would be able to sing together again; Lara said, “anytime”.
** Corey Hart was on stage for a catchy medley with Éric Lapointe, Marc Dupré, and some of their team members for a medley of "Little Love", "Tonight", "Never Surrender" and "Sunglasses At Night". Julie Masse also did a fine medley utilizing Alex and many of the candidates, especially the women.
**Other performances included Yama Laurent, last year’s winner, returning with a more rhythmic song than was her usual fare last year; she’s just released her first album (one of the perks of winners of La Voix). And Cirque Éloize provided musical acrobatic numbers, which also served to allow voters time to call in their choice.
**And, to no great surprise, La Voix will be back next year for season 8. As to Lara’s availability, she would certainly seem to have time available on her schedule despite the upcoming tour; one imagines she’s coordinated the dates with just that possibility in mind. And the only concert dates just before the live shows in April are in Quebec, as discussed right below.
Lara provided a brief promotional video for her upcoming 50 tour with the focus on Quebec. It can be seen at:
www.facebook.com/larafabianofficial/videos/419570752155480/
She included the following caption: “Dear Quebec public, I couldn't celebrate my 50th birthday in 50 cities of the world without stopping at my home, here in Montreal and Quebec. I will give you an appointment on April 1st and 2nd, 2020 at Place des Arts (Montreal) and on April 4, 2020 at the Videotron Centre (Quebec City) to celebrate with you this precious relationship that united us from the very beginning . On the program will be all my songs that are also yours. I am filled with an incredible gratitude for you and I tell you very very soon.”
A brief (translated) article about it in the Journal of Montreal (https://www.journaldemontreal.com/2019/05/05/trois-spectacles-de-lara-fabian-au-quebec-lan-prochain-1?fbclid=IwAR1S-MMZ2LK-K4WqSdngtUcUhKPgEWpJD0rY52DH8UfkJcerCq2VdplYRkI)
reads:
----------------------------------------------------------
Three shows by Lara Fabian in Quebec next year
Singer Lara Fabian will perform three shows in Quebec next year as part of her 50 World Tour.
The artist announced in the grand finale of the show La Voix of TVA Sunday night, she will perform at the Place des Arts in Montreal on 1st and 2nd of April 2020, and at Videotron Quebec Center 4 April 2020.
"To my heart, it was inconceivable not to plan a stop on this international tour at home here in Quebec. Many of my songs, which travel from one country to another, are born here. When I look back, I am filled with incredible gratitude towards the Quebec public, and it is in this state of great recognition that I will sing in this show all the songs that these people have chosen to let into their hearts since already 25 years", Lara Fabian said in a statement on Sunday.
She will begin her world tour this fall which will bring her notably to the United States, France, Belgium, Switzerland and Russia.
Tickets for his shows are available on larafabian.ca.
--------------------------------------------------------
And…that emphasizes that there is a “larafabian.ca”, which has not been specifically called out by Lara’s people. It seems to be set up primarily for the three concerts in Canada, and to advertise the album ‘Papillon’.
And speaking of that…the album actually jumped up 20 places on the charts in Belgium, to #47; in France it’s dropped out of the top #100. In Quebec, as noted last week, it’s no longer in the top 10, but La Voix 2019 has maintained its #1 ranking for ‘English language’ records. There was actually a nice moment during the semifinals when they brought out all the (18) team members who had passed to the ‘live’ shows, told everybody that La Voix 2019 had reached ‘gold record’ status, and handed each of them (and the judges, too) a gold record with a certificate.
To end the news this week on a more somber note, it is the anniversary of the passing of Maurane. Lara left a brief video of her singing to Maurane, at
www.facebook.com/larafabianofficial/videos/2232632543440788/
with the caption, “Mau, often, I'm with you, I see you... I feel your presence.. everything from you is so alive... we have so many times sung together... but today I borrow your words... And I sing for you.... I love you my friend.... Forever....”
Interesting photo(s) of the week: From Lara’s FB site
www.facebook.com/larafabianofficial/photos/a.622966977744803/2764294093612070/?type=3&theater
with the caption, “Go go go... final day for La Voix... we're gone!!! Daphnée and my husband support me for this wonderful last....love #equipelara”
And, as Lara said, La Voix is now gone from her schedule. We learned several weeks ago that she’s going to Turkey to sing with others at a hotel opening there, so perhaps she will be taking a vacation as well. Well-deserved with a very successful La Voix conclusion!
