Another week, another quarter-final for La Voix, which dominated Lara’s time once again. Here’s a review of episode 11. [As noted last week, the Update this week is one day early].
*Lara’s three candidates were Frederique Germain, Mory Haten and Genevieve Jodoin. About Frederique, who sang the French song, “La Boheme”, Lara said that she has a desire to be an original, to improvise. She has great intensity, and Lara understood that she wanted to sing that song to “make an alliance between what the song is and what you are”. The song was quite complex, and demanded an intelligent audience to respond to it (those words are an oxymoron ). She sang it well.
*Mory sang “SOS de Terrien en detresse”, which, appropriately enough, he said had accompanied him in the difficult tests of his life. Lara said that it was a chance for him to transmit the personal and intimate side of himself; and, with his great vocal range and sensitivity, it was for the opportunity to work with someone like him that she became a coach on La Voix. Marc, in commenting on the song, which included high notes that demanded a bit of ‘falsetto’ voice, said many woman singers wouldn’t have attempted it.
*Genevieve sang “Hello” (from Adele). Lara said it was a gift to work with her – she who was very professional and yet very fragile, indeed almost troubled. She gave a magnificent performance, and the audience responded with sustained applause. When asked to comment, Alex said that he could not say anything more important than what the audience had just indicated. Lara said she had three words: magic, magnificent, stupefying.
*The scores (Lara first, then the public, then the total):
Frederique (30; 5; 35); Mory (35; 31; 66); Genevieve (35; 64; 99). Genevieve deserved to win, and IMHO, Frederique was actually better than Mory; from Lara’s comments, her vote may have been skewed because of how much she personally liked Mory (which happened last year as well with some candidates). Genevieve, in her ‘acceptance’ speech, said she apologized to her children and her ‘chum’ for taking all this time away from them – she never expected to get this far. The host reminded Lara that it was only because of her inability to choose in the duels (and in effect the show’s making allowance for that) that she got to keep Genevieve, who now looks like she might go far in the next two rounds.
*In the other contests: Eric had three quite good candidates, Stephen Gagnon (singing the Leonard Cohen song “Everybody Knows”); Colin Moore (singing “Je vais t’aimer”, which Lara has sung); and Tommy-Charles (singing ‘I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You”, sung by Elvis Presley among others). Lara said about Tommy-Charles that he could have been the son of Karen Carpenter and Roy Orbison (who both sang that song).
Of the three Stephen and Tommy-Charles were superior (IMHO), but Colin, who had the worst voice but the most emotional presentation, won with 77 points.
*Marc had Cristine Toca (who you may remember had been rescued by him from Lara), Jordan Levesque and Rick Pagano. Rick was the run-away winner with 103 points, and both Eric (whom Marc had blocked from taking him) and Marc called him a true ‘rock star’. IMHO, Rick deserved to win, actually doing a better job with his voice than he had previously. His grandmother, again, came up on stage to congratulate him. Cristine’s song was quite complicated, and didn’t serve to show off her voice’s power but instead her vocal ability and intelligence (likely over the head of the public).
*Alex had Jacob Guay (who sang the song “You are the reason” for his deceased grandmother), Kelly-Ann Martin (who sang a complicated song) and Gabriel Cyr, who also played the piano. Gabriel’s song was quite direct, and he won, deservedly, with 81 points. When asked to describe Gabriel’s performance, Lara said it reminded her of “a small acidic fruit coated with white chocolate. Alex countered, referring to Gabriel’s outfit, that it reminded him of “a good dark chocolate coated with aluminum foil”.
*Overall, then, from this perspective, deserving candidates won for three of the judges. Only in Eric’s case was the worst candidate promoted – and tellingly, Eric did not make him his first choice.
*Another lesson one can get from this show is that if you want to win, pick a song that the audience knows, and that is highly emotional, regardless of how well you can sing it. Do not pick a complicated song, or try to showcase for the audience a song you think they should hear. In other words, don’t overestimate the musical intelligence of the audience, if your goal is to gain their support.
As she had for the previous quarter-final, Lara posted a picture of herself with the two losing candidates, Mory and Frederique, at:

with the caption, “Bravo Frédérique Germain and Mory Hatem for your way in the show... thank you for sharing with us your "voices".... I'm proud to have accompanied you...everything is just starting for you... even if this adventure is ending... music is a long and beautiful road... #Lavoix #Coach”

Charles Lafortune, the host of La Voix, has an autistic child. In a video which Lara put on her Facebook site,
www.facebook.com/larafabianofficial/videos/657475244673888/
he announced the formation of a new foundation, “Fondation Leski”. This foundation is to come to the aid of victims of criminal acts, people suffering from mental illness, and those who are autistic. As he noted, being on La Voix has put him in contact with many wonderful people, and in particular, Lara. He thus said he was pleased to announce that Lara had agreed to act as spokesperson for the foundation. Here are Lara’s comments in the video:
“Hello, it’s Lara Fabian. In this era where the #MeToo movement continues to spread, the stigmatism surrounding mental illness is still very much present and where social inclusion must become a priority. It seems to me essential to become the spokesperson for a foundation so close to people in difficulty. Thanks to the service dogs of the Foundation, many people in need could have the strength to pursue their dreams and the courage to advance. I invite you to like their page on Facebook, and to meet Maki, Dumbo, Kayla as well as the magnificent team of the Leski Foundation. Thank you. Thank you.”
And then, as a separate caption, Lara wrote, “Thank you Charles Lafortune for being the beautiful person you are ... I am very proud to be the spokesperson of the Leski Foundation ... I invite you to follow them on their social networks, to discover their concrete actions conducted to help people in difficulty. Thanks to the support of the Foundation's serice dogs, many people in need will have the strength to pursue their dreams .... and the courage to move forward ... With me and for them, support #fondationleski!”
Of course, this appeals to Lara as well, given her mother’s mental problems...but in general is consistent with her efforts for charities, now in Quebec, and previously in France and Belgium.
If the name ‘Kayla’ sounds familiar, that’s because it’s the name of Lara’s dog, not coincidentally. A picture of Gabriele with Kayla can be found at:

with the accompanying (translated) text:

In this week of volunteer action, the Fondation Leski would like to thank all its volunteers who are actively involved in close or far to contribute to make us shine.
We would like to introduce them to you
This is Gabriele (Ndr: husband of Lara Fabian). He has been involved as a volunteer for the foundation for 6 months. It was enough for a meeting, a common passion for dogs and the desire to help people so that a collaboration with the foundation begins.
We would particularly like to thank Gabriele for his exemplary dedication and patience.
Not only does he participate in the development of business, marketing and awareness campaigns with the public, but he is taking care of Kayla's desensitization and socialization that is in training in our assistance dog program.
Your support is very precious to us.
Thank you Gabriele

In other news, what is more an attempt to keep in touch with her audience than to truly promote her album, Lara nevertheless left a short video of herself at
www.facebook.com/larafabianofficial/videos/383653459146992/
with the caption, “A little intimate and unreleased moment that I offer you... an 'a capella' on "Alcyon".... just for you... love #newalbum #Papillon”.
As to how Papillon is doing…in Belgium, it has fallen 33 places to #67; in France it’s fallen 25 places to #104; and even in Quebec, it has fallen out of the top 10. However, La Voix 2019 is #1, ironically in the English speaking album category (presumably because it has some songs in English on it).
There are some wonderful pictures from what was perhaps the photoshoot Lara referred to last week. Sylvain Blais has the following caption to one of the photos: “I have the chance to make beautiful encounters in my life. Yesterday I was in shoot with the stunning @larafabianofficial for the next issue of 192 magazine of the @bijouterie_italienne. I can't wait to show you this. Thank you.

And while these could qualify as ‘interesting photo(s) of the week, another candidate is at:

The semifinals will feature two favorites of Lara on her team, Samantha and Genevieve, as the candidates are whittled down to four, one from each of the judges. Of course she doesn’t get to make the decision by herself, which might be hard for her. That show will be reviewed in the next Update.
