The big news, professionally, this past week was Lara’s announcement that:
“"Camouflage" is now ready!”.
How literally to take that is always open to question; Lara in particular has been known to tinker with the final product, but perhaps this is different. In any event, it would seem the album is about ready for distribution although they will probably avoid any summertime release. A single, maybe even this month, is likely, to ‘wet the appetite’ of her potential audience. The first full scale English album release in more than a decade! A momentous occurrence.
Lara accompanied that announcement with a picture of herself on the beach, at:
www.facebook.com/larafabianofficial/photos/a.215378125170359.50343.201065806601591/1589229601118531/?type=3&theater
accompanied by the caption, “And taking a short break under the sun of the City of Angels.”. This was not her only visual reference to being there; on her official Twitter page, she showed another picture of the California beachfront, including palm trees, visible at:
twitter.com/search?q=Lara%20Fabian%20Official&src=typd
with the caption, “I love Santa Monica”.
How long Lara will be there is not known, whether she has more work to do, or is just vacationing. But another question is, where will she be returning to? This is raised by the following article posted by the Lara Fabian – PHQ site (https://www.facebook.com/larafabianphq/photos/rpp.353946178085395/1150232968456708/?type=3&theater). Here’s the translation:
----------------------------------
Lara Fabian is in the course of preparing her great return! This album in English (which one supposes will be titled “Camouflage”) will be the first in this language in 13 years! It is quasi-ready, a first single ought to be released shortly. One speaks of it produced by the team of Mans Zelmerlow, the Swedish winner of Eurovision in 2015.
“12 songs have been recorded”, she specifies. “Then, we polish. I adore my new songs and I hope that people will love them also. I can’t wait to present again a new album in English.”
We are not going to say that the Belgian singer wants to return to the conquest of the international public. She already has a large part of her admirers outside of the francophone, particularly in the countries of Eastern Europe. The English speaking world for her has still not quite cracked…
World Tour
Anyway, the 47 year old Belgian has also decided to set off again on a big world tour. Under a poster where her face appeared in colored triangles (which will not be the cover of the album, we are assured), Lara has already fixed 30 dates for 2018,concerts for which one can begin to buy tickets starting today… The “Camouflage World Tour” would begin next February 3.
In brief, the sweet Lara has been strongly occupied, she has not been able to be idle these last months… Especially since she also left the country to settle, with Gabriel, her Sicilian husband, in the south of Spain near Marbella. Apparently it is her love for this region that led her to pack her bags last December; she fell in love with a very pretty little village! She has nevertheless maintained a pied-a-terre here (in Belgium), notably so that she could continue to visit in Belgium her mother whose degenerative illness she has publicized. But actually Lara Fabian is more often in Spain than here, there is no doubt about that. Note that she has also posted many photos of her recent trips, notably to Los Angeles, but also to Rome…
Until When?
Does she envision remaining permanently in Spain? That, she alone could say, but among those close to her, they have some doubts. After spending the first few months of honeymoon with the region,, she could begin to be bored. And if we come back to the slightly impulsive character of the singer, she might break for another place, her financial means allowing her definitely to change her mind.
-----------------------------------------------------
One assumes this story is accurate, although there is always the possibility that it is an exaggeration of sorts. In its favor is the fact that Lara has posted various photos of the view of the Mediterranean from southern Spain. And Lara has said that she has a strong peripatetic impulse, she always wants to move.
The goal of these updates is not to probe into Lara’s private life, except insofar as it relates to her music. This does have some musical implications, as well as raising a number of questions. She has left a country where she spoke French primarily, to one where the natives speak Spanish; this is a somewhat parallel move to her new album not being in French, as well as Lara’s shift towards using English and other languages more explicitly on her FB site. All in all, a moving away from the Francophile milieu. There has been a trend in recent years, somewhat obscured by Lara’s release and promotion of ‘Ma vie dans la tienne’, toward her more fully ‘owning’ her self-designation as a “citizen of the world”; these activities are further steps in that direction. It is interesting that she didn’t let her public know (though she was under no obligation to do so); perhaps a part of that was her not wanting to alienate her Belgian countrymen, or her French audience.
As for the questions: what does this mean for Lou? Is she now going to a Spanish school? It seemed as if Lou spent part of her time with Gerard (Pullicino); what happens with that? One also wonders if Lara needed some space from her mother and her deteriorating condition, which (having gone through it with my mother) can be quite demoralizing. There is also her father, and his painful fibromyalgia. Or perhaps Lara felt it was no longer very safe living near Brussels, given the terrorist situation. The article says she ‘fell in love’ with the small Spanish village, but it’s equally plausible that she was leaving a place she fell out of love with.
As to the conclusion of the article, about where Lara might move next…when she was last in Quebec, she seemed to indicate she was thinking of moving back there sooner rather than later. It is certainly not inconceivable that if one or both of her parents die, she might leave Europe entirely, and Montreal would be a very plausible destination. If so, she might then resume her North American career with a bit more focus; this English album might thus serve as a forerunner of such an effort. All speculation at this point, but worth watching, nonetheless. Of course, if she REALLY loves Santa Monica…
In album-related news, the second ‘pre-listening’ session for ‘Camouflage’ took place in Brussels on June 1. It seemed to get a good reception, from the comments of a few people who wrote to the Odacity FB site. We have no indication of what, exactly, Lara’s people want from these events, since if the album is really finished, there would be no changes despite what people think; and rumor has it that the first single has already been chosen. Perhaps it will help them for the promotion. They originally noted there would be other such sessions around the world, so we'll see if that takes place.
As far as the tour is concerned, tickets became available for Paris (June 16, 2018) and Budapest (April 8, 2018); no new sites have been added, but Lara indicated that new venues are being planned.
In other news, Lara posted a link to an article consisting of 33 wedding photos associated with June being ‘gay pride month’, at
www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/emotional-lgbt-wedding-pics_us_59318801e4b075bff0f2d905?utm_campaign=hp_fb_pages&utm_source=main_fb&utm_medium=facebook&ncid=fcbklnkushpmg00000063.
In her heading she referred to “Fierté Montréal / Montréal Pride”, and accompanied it with “Love is Love .. And we shouldn't even have to say it …"
In a somewhat different vein, unfortunately Lara had to post yet another regretful Tweet, “One Love Manchester”, at
These two news items together show the state of mankind’s challenges today.
Taking a stroll down memory lane, Lara noted that it was 20 years ago on June 3 that ‘Pure’ was released in France, Belgium and Switzerland, an album that she said “was the beginning of a great love story between you and me, which continues still today. I love you…Thank you, thank you thank you…”. Of course, speaking more broadly, the love affair of Lara with her Canadian audience began in August 1991 with her self-titled album, that sold 100,000 copies in Canada and was certified platinum; followed by Carpe Diem in 1995 that sold 250,000 copies in Canada (double platinum). For many, however, ‘Pure’ was the magical album that showcased Lara at a peak. Lara did mention, “This album, written and composed with Rick Allison, contained the titles "Tout", "La différence" et "Je t'aime". In response (thanks to the LFIAG-Select site for the post), Rick Allison wrote “Happy anniversary to Pure and long life to this work which changed my life, and to you Lara who always knew how to sublimate the colors! Love, Ricky”.
There are some four days left on the bids for Lara’s performing outfits (at www.troostwijkauctions.com/uk/garde-robe-lara-fabian/01-24678/); prices still range from $150-$250. The ‘dinner with Lara’ for the other auction winners takes place this coming Saturday at the ‘Hotel de la Poste’ in Brussels.
The ‘Lara Fabian web’ site has been trying to find a way for people to send mail to Lara. The conclusion to their search came in a notice from Odacity: “Unhappily, we have no authorization to establish contact or personal communication between artists and fans/the public. Thanks for your understanding. Odacity”. Earlier, Lara’s Team indicated that there is no system to transfer mail between the record company (e.g., Warner France) and artists, so the sole means of communication with Lara is via her official FB page. One can understand that artists do not necessarily have teams of people to go through all their mail, and with one as popular as Lara it could be overwhelming. The same holds true for record companies and their bevy of artists. That's not to say the artists might not miss out on some interesting material that fans could provide, outside of the framework of social media.
Interesting photo of the week: from Thierry Martino, who lives in Paris:
with the caption, “A voice ... a friend.... one heart. I Miss you” [He’s the founder of L’Agence Successo, a public relations firm].
And while this is not a new photo, Lara updated her FB page with it,
www.facebook.com/larafabianofficial/photos/a.201066899934815.46181.201065806601591/1596547507053407/?type=3&theater
The only things we can be sure of for the coming week are that Lara will have her ‘auctioned’ dinner for Fondation Papillon, and that the auction of her performing outfits will come to an end. The first requires her to be back in Belgium by the weekend – and apparently she still has a small place there - so she’ll be leaving L.A., if she’s not already done so. Other than that, we’ll just wait and see; there have been no lack of surprises, a good thing during this ‘in-between’ time.
