There were two main items of interest on this otherwise slow, post-holiday week: one personal and one professional. We’ll start with the personal…
As many of you probably know, yesterday (January 9th) was Lara’s (47th) birthday. We join others in wishing her a (belated) very happy ‘anniversaire’.
‘Tele Loisirs’ wished her a happy birthday, with a focus on her marriage (http://www.msn.com/fr-ch/divertissement/celebrity/bon-anniversaire-lara-fabian-qui-est-le-mari-de-la-chanteuse/ar-BBy3QWl); here’s their (translated) article:
-------------------------------------------
Happy Birthday Lara Fabian: who is the husband of the singer?
This Monday, January 9, Lara Fabian starts the week with one more year! The singer will probably blow her 47th candle in the company of her family, near the man of her life: Gabriel Di Giorgio. After living for almost 15 years with Canadian artist Rick Allison and 7 years with French director Gérard Pullicino (moreover daddy of her little daughter Lou, now 8 years old) [sic: she is really 9], the interpreter of ‘Tout’ is now in a couple with another man of the world of the show: her husband is a magician!
It is now four years that the couple lives together, but the singer never tires of telling of their encounter, in 2012: it was in Acireale, Sicily, that they saw each other for the first time. The young woman is then vocal coach on a musical comedy project, he is a member of the troupe.
"That day, I'm a leached version of myself: not coiffed, not made up and not really dressed to my advantage ... Yet ... I'll learn later that in one glance, Gabriel is certain: I am the woman of his life! " "She told the Paris-Match magazine.
Today, we know that the magician had seen right: Lara Fabian and Gabriel Di Giorgio share happy days. So this birthday, Lara Fabian will probably celebrate with a smile: it’s of little importance how much time passes when one is in love!
---------------------------------------------
As might be imagined, various websites offered their own good wishes, with a variety of presentations. For example, the ‘Lara Fabian Is Here’ site linked to a video (from last year’s birthday) of people singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to Lara in various languages, from many countries:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwHnVanUtN4
That would be hard to beat, and hopefully Lara has saved it some place in case it disappears.
The Lara Fabian Romanian site prepared a video of Lara from different audience concert footage celebrating her better qualities, at:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHNUcANEDR8
or equivalently,
www.facebook.com/larafabianromania/videos/1300031750019819/
They also included the following very moving statement:
---------------------------------------------------
Happy Birthday, Lara Fabian!
You know, Lara, we’ll never find words good enough to completely justify the way you make our spirits awake with all your love and kindness. Once, a Romanian writer said some beautiful words that could resume it better: you "forever raised our souls from mediocrity".
For all the joy that brings seeing you on stage, again and again...
For all the love that flows like a river through your words and eyes...
For the longing in your eyes that makes us better understand our own...
For the beautiful and brave child that lives in you...
For your sincere generosity and modesty that deeply shake this tormented humanity...
For your crazy laughs and your sparkles of mirth and light...
If there's a God out there, somewhere, we thank Him for giving us you, Lara.
-------------------------------------------------
To which we say: Amen!
In the exact same vein, the ‘Lara Fabian Greece’ FB site presented a beautiful birthday video for Lara, visible at
www.facebook.com/larafabiangreece/videos/612839895507774/
with the following accompanying caption:
--------------------------------------------------
May your days be touched with sunshine and your heart overflow with love!
May everything in your life sparkle with a radiance that only comes from happiness!
May the light in your soul always shine bright and your beautiful smile never fade away!
May you be blessed abundantly today, tomorrow and the days to come!
Thank you for inspiring us with your immense talent and your gentle, modest heart!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
Love from Greece!!!

Lara’s good heart and poetry comes out in her fans, as well!
Julie, on the ‘Lara Fabian Voice of Passion’, wished Lara a happy birthday, and linked to the following wonderful video from Tarcisio Junior, illustrating Lara’s song “"Je Rêve d'une Étoile", at
www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcIpSvNGrmo&feature=youtu.be
From Mariya Maksumiv, a video at
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q26Sq2hQL3k
and text (google translated from Russian): “Lara Fabian. She is a mother. She is the daughter. Sometimes she dances on stage. We love her infectious laughter. She is funny. She is fire. She is very fond of her angels. She is sensual. She's beautiful. She's strong. In any case, she always speaks with her heart. She is real. She is very kind. She loves everyone and everything. Sometimes it hurts. We are always waiting for her. I’m always glad to see her. Lara, we love you! Happy Birthday!”
Still in the Russian vein, the Lara Fabian Connecting People site offered the following (google translated) comments:
-----------------------------------------------------
January 9th, a good excuse to recall that we are united today as Lara celebrates her birthday, and it is certainly an important event for us. It is today that was born a woman of great heart and soul, whose voice for the past several decades, brings together people from all over the world. We wish Lara that her New Year will become for her a bright and happy one, to realize all her plans and projects, but the most important thing - it is, of course, health - for her and for her family. It is difficult to implement without a health plan. Let her family which she protects, prosper, grow only stronger and continue to give her the strength for new achievements. And we finish by saying we will support her and look forward to new shows and meetings.
---------------------------------------------------
And another youtube birthday video, this from Bulgaria:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVUoh_BSpZ4
The Lara Fabian Web site posted a ‘delicious’ card for Lara, at
www.dromadaire.com/ecard/view/?p=eyJ0eGlkIjoiWFktMTQ4Mzk4MjA4MTc1NSIsInJfZW1haWwiOiJlLW1haWxAbGFyYWZhYmlhbndlYi5jb20ifQ%3D%3D&utm_source=sent_conf&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=mail_destinataire
The Lara Fabian Mexico FB site produced a wonderfully creative birthday picture for her, at
www.facebook.com/LaraFabianfromMexico/photos/a.556367684417296.1073741826.556364357750962/1208756649178393/?type=3&theater
with the accompanying statement, “Happy Birthday Lara Fabian!
Wish you a year with more successes and triumphs!
Good Health for you and your family!
We're waiting for you around these parts!”
And that leads into the professional segment of this Update. In response to a question from a Mexican fan about the upcoming international tour, Lara’s Team (Odacity) responded, “We haven't done any detailed advertisement of the dates of the new tour (International). We'll make the announcement when we have information of the countries, dates, etc.-- Lara is now working on the completion of her new album... patience . Thank you "
Also, in another response, they wrote, “Questions on specific countries, cities cannot be answered at this point, as we do not have the information. As indicated in the message above, this is work in progress. Team Lara”
And in that same vein, Lara herself wrote: “While I continue working on the new English album, my team is working hard on the new tour which will bring me and my music across countries and continents. This will be such an exciting year!”
Lara put an accompanying picture on her FB site of a tee shirt celebrating the coming ‘world tour’ of 2017/2018, at:
www.facebook.com/larafabianofficial/photos/a.215378125170359.50343.201065806601591/1393581617349998/?type=3&theater
(it is noted that this is just an image to accompany Lara’s message and is not a merchandising item, nor the logo or title of the tour).
All this followed her comment from two days earlier: “A new year, a new adventure.. Retour au travail.. So excited to continue working on the new English album.. J'ai hâte de vous le présenter.. I look forward to present it to you... En attendant, un souvenir d'un autre album en anglais.. "No big deal", from one of the previous English albums…" The link was to one of the few videos done in promotion of ‘A Wonderful Life’, at:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkh0CdSzX5c&list=PL0hTtN15bGbjxolpF_4a8kmqKO657lX4K&index=8
The use of language here may be instructive: while the discussion of the work on the English album is in both English and French, the tour discussion (and tee shirt) is in English, suggesting what countries the emphasis for it will be. As we also suspected, the dates for the tour seem to be waiting for a better estimate on when the album will actually be finished and released; we know these things invariably take longer than expected, and in Lara’s case, for the English albums in particular, a lot longer.
Not unexpectedly, there was the request from a few fans that Lara post all her messages in French – to which Lara’s team responded that people can use the ‘translate’ button below the text to translate it into French, or any other language [something Lara’s (non-French speaking) English fans have long had to do]. This did not satisfy everybody – some felt that it was inappropriate for Lara to be using any other language than French as the prime language on her site – and even the term ‘Team’ Lara came under attack. Without going into much more detail, this initiated a discussion of whether Lara was really a French singer, or a Belgian singer, or an international singer. Lara’s Team stated their position definitively in two responses (in French, translation provided here):
“Hello, this is not the French "page" of Lara, but her official page, quite simply. This page is moderated by an international team and multi-lingual, in several languages, including the French and English. In addition, Lara is a Belgian-Canadian artist, citizen of multi-lingual countries. She has the right to express herself as much in English as in French, or in her native language, Italian. Or in another language of her choice. This page is addressed to all the fans of Lara, in the world. You can select the option in the settings of your facebook account to choose the Automatic Translation of all the texts into French. Team Lara”.
And, then, in a somewhat more conciliatory tone,
“If you follow this page regularly, you will see that it is not a matter of "exclusive use” of English. The music of Lara carries the French language throughout the world, and we don't have to fight linguistically about the lead on this page. We will continue to animate this page in French, English and other languages. Team Lara”
The above discussion is included here because it is also indicative of the inherent tension between Lara’s desire to be an international singer and her base support in French speaking countries. This is coming to a head now given both the trends in Lara’s appeal around the world vis-a vis France, and the immediate commercial reality that if she wants to maximize sales for her next album and tour, she must appeal to that audience in the language they are more likely to understand. The common axiom is that the English audience for records is some ten times that of the French. [Although that ratio is more general than for one person, you can see it to some extent with Celine Dion, where her 15 English albums have average sales of around 10 million, while her 12 French albums average under 2 million, e.g., celinedioncharts.com/byalbum.htm]. Lara’s English language albums have not sold particularly well in France, and given that even the French language albums don’t garner the numbers there that they used to, she has to change with the times – as she has repeatedly said. Another ‘common understanding’ is that most musical artists make the majority of their money by touring. While Lara will certainly tour in France and Belgium with the new English album, this ‘contretemps’ will likely intensify if the upcoming concert schedule takes her away from this French base for most of the next two years.
It is tricky for her. Lara can also not afford to antagonize her long-term French supporters/base, nor does she want to. One understands that many Francophiles see the French language under attack around the world, especially due to the strong use of English on the Internet, and so are sensitive to its use by someone they consider “their French singer” on her own page. The issue will likely have to be managed with care.
One additional point in this regard: if Lara’s name surfaces to people not familiar with her, their initial tendency will be to ‘google’ her. The first thing that comes up, outside of youtube videos, is her ‘Official Site’, larafabian.com. This site is exclusively in French, which doesn’t help many of these people around the world. Everything her Team said about her FB site should apply to this one as well [unless it is really a ‘Warner France’ site, rather than Lara’s “own” – in which case it shouldn’t be]. Lara’s ‘multi-lingual’ Team should consider providing access in other languages, especially English – there is no in-built ‘translate button’ available on it, as there is on Facebook. [If one uses ‘Chrome’ as the search engine, it does allow the option for translation into other languages, though that is not as good as having it written in a language directly for the site].
To complete this discussion of Lara’s “professional future”, the MZ II FB site linked to an article discussing various artists’ “returns” in 2017 (http://www.poleculture.net/chroniques/ils-feront-le-buzz/chronique-15320.html); here’s what they say about Lara (in translation):
“Citizen of the world and already strong with three albums in English, the Belgian singer is currently in Sweden to prepare her fourth album for the international market. Although the language of Shakespeare has never allowed Lara Fabian to have the international career she has always been aiming for, she still enjoys popularity in a majority of countries, enabling her to perform in the four corners of the globe and to spread her music beyond our borders.”
Obviously, Lara wants to change that 'Shakespeare' assessment! Interestingly, they count ‘three’ English albums, and if this was intentional (and not an error), they are one of the few that include ‘Every Woman in Me’ in their assessment.
In other news, there are two songs featuring Lara that appear to have been shown as ‘Christmas songs of the year’ on Russian TV1 on 1-7-17. First, Lara’s performance of ‘Mama moya’ at
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xq71HDEu-lE
and then a duet with Sumi Jo of ‘Sons and Daughters’ (the video also includes ‘Mama moya’), at
www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6YpF7r99UA&feature=youtu.be
It seems to have been recorded when Lara was in Socchi in September, though her outfit for ‘Sons and Daughters’ was different in the version broadcast at that time (the video for ‘Mama moya’ was the same).

On the same site, Isabelle Froth put the following creative birthday ‘gif’ for Lara

It’s easy to say we should expect ‘more of the same’ from Lara with a focus on preparing the new album over the next few weeks (or months, leading up to her London concert in March). We know, however, that she is constantly surprising us with public appearances/press opportunities. We’ll see what pops up, with 2017 now underway.
